On the most compact regular lattice in large dimensions: A statistical mechanical approach
In this paper I will approach the computation of the maximum density of
regular lattices in large dimensions using a statistical mechanics approach.
The starting point will be some theorems of Roger, which are virtually unknown
in the community of physicists. Using his approach one can see that there are
many similarities (and differences) with the problem of computing the entropy
of a liquid of perfect spheres. The relation between the two problems is
investigated in details. Some conjectures are presented, that need further
investigation in order to check their consistency.Comment: 27 page
Guidance for Restarting Inflammatory Bowel Disease Therapy in Patients Who Withheld Immunosuppressant Medications During COVID-19
Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD] are frequently treated with immunosuppressant medications. During the coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19] pandemic, recommendations for IBD management have included that patients should stay on their immunosuppressant medications if they are not infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2], but to temporarily hold these medications if symptomatic with COVID-19 or asymptomatic but have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. As more IBD patients are infected globally, it is important to also understand how to manage IBD medications during convalescence while an individual with IBD is recovering from COVID-19. In this review, we address the differences between a test-based versus a symptoms-based strategy as related to COVID-19, and offer recommendations on when it is appropriate to consider restarting IBD therapy in patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 or with clinical symptoms consistent with COVID-19. In general, we recommend a symptoms-based approach, due to the current lack of confidence in the accuracy of available testing and the clinical significance of prolonged detection of virus via molecular testing
Top-Down Approach to Unified Supergravity Models
We introduce a new approach for studying unified supergravity models. In this
approach all the parameters of the grand unified theory (GUT) are fixed by
imposing the corresponding number of low energy observables. This determines
the remaining particle spectrum whose dependence on the low energy observables
can now be investigated. We also include some SUSY threshold corrections that
have previously been neglected. In particular the SUSY threshold corrections to
the fermion masses can have a significant impact on the Yukawa coupling
unification.Comment: 19 pages, uuencoded compressed ps file, DESY 94-057 (paper format

Recommendations From the International Consortium on Professional Nursing Practice in Long-Term Care Homes
In response to the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics’ global agenda for clinical research and quality of care in nursing homes, the International Consortium on Professional Nursing Practice in Long Term Care Homes (the Consortium) was formed to develop nursing leadership capacity in nursing homes and address the concerns regarding the current state of nursing leadership in long-term care homes (LTCHs). At its invitational, two-day inaugural meeting, the Consortium brought together international nurse experts to explore the potential of registered nurses (RNs) who work as supervisors or charge nurses within the LTCHs and the value of their contribution in nursing homes, consider what RN competencies might be needed, discuss effective educational (curriculum and practice) experiences, health care policy, and human resources planning requirements, and to identify what sustainable nurse leadership strategies and models might enhance the effectiveness of RNs in improving resident, family, and staff outcomes.
The Consortium made recommendations about the following priority issues for action: (1) define the competencies of RNs required to care for older adults in LTCH; (2) create a LTCH environment where the RN role is differentiated from other team members and they can practice to their full scope; and (3) prepare RN leaders to operate effectively in person-centered care LTCH environments. In addition to clear recommendations for practice, the consortium identified several areas where further research is needed. The research agenda the consortium advocated for emphasizes an international coordination of research efforts to explore similar issues, the pursuit of examining the impact of nursing and organizational models, and the showcasing of excellence in nursing practice in care homes, so that others might learn from what works.
