Is There Chronic Brain Damage in Retired NFL Players? Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, and Neurology Examinations of 45 Retired Players
BACKGROUND: Neuropathology and surveys of retired National Football League (NFL) players suggest that chronic brain damage is a frequent result of a career in football. There is limited information on the neurological statuses of living retired players. This study aimed to fill the gap in knowledge by conducting in-depth neurological examinations of 30- to 60-year-old retired NFL players. HYPOTHESIS: In-depth neurological examinations of 30- to 60-year-old retired players are unlikely to detect objective clinical abnormalities in the majority of subjects. STUDY DESIGN: A day-long medical examination was conducted on 45 retired NFL players, including state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; susceptibility weighted imaging [SWI], diffusion tensor imaging [DTI]), comprehensive neuropsychological and neurological examinations, interviews, blood tests, and APOE (apolipoprotein E) genotyping. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Participants\u27 histories focused on neurological and depression symptoms, exposure to football, and other factors that could affect brain function. The neurological examination included Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) evaluation of cognitive function and a comprehensive search for signs of dysarthria, pyramidal system dysfunction, extrapyramidal system dysfunction, and cerebellar dysfunction. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) measured depression. Neuropsychological tests included pen-and-paper and ImPACT evaluation of cognitive function. Anatomical examination SWI and DTI MRI searched for brain injuries. The results were statistically analyzed for associations with markers of exposure to football and related factors, such as body mass index (BMI), ethanol use, and APOE4 status. RESULTS: The retired players\u27 ages averaged 45.6 +/- 8.9 years (range, 30-60 years), and they had 6.8 +/- 3.2 years (maximum, 14 years) of NFL play. They reported 6.9 +/- 6.2 concussions (maximum, 25) in the NFL. The majority of retired players had normal clinical mental status and central nervous system (CNS) neurological examinations. Four players (9%) had microbleeds in brain parenchyma identified in SWI, and 3 (7%) had a large cavum septum pellucidum with brain atrophy. The number of concussions/dings was associated with abnormal results in SWI and DTI. Neuropsychological testing revealed isolated impairments in 11 players (24%), but none had dementia. Nine players (20%) endorsed symptoms of moderate or severe depression on the BDI and/or met criteria for depression on PHQ; however, none had dementia, dysarthria, parkinsonism, or cerebellar dysfunction. The number of football-related concussions was associated with isolated abnormalities on the clinical neurological examination, suggesting CNS dysfunction. The APOE4 allele was present in 38% of the players, a larger number than would be expected in the general male population (23%-26%). CONCLUSION: MRI lesions and neuropsychological impairments were found in some players; however, the majority of retired NFL players had no clinical signs of chronic brain damage. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results need to be reconciled with the prevailing view that a career in football frequently results in chronic brain damage
Electronic structure, magnetic and optical properties of intermetallic compounds R2Fe17 (R=Pr,Gd)
In this paper we report comprehensive experimental and theoretical
investigation of magnetic and electronic properties of the intermetallic
compounds Pr2Fe17 and Gd2Fe17. For the first time electronic structure of these
two systems was probed by optical measurements in the spectral range of 0.22-15
micrometers. On top of that charge carriers parameters (plasma frequency and
relaxation frequency) and optical conductivity s(w) were determined.
Self-consistent spin-resolved bandstructure calculations within the
conventional LSDA+U method were performed. Theoretical interpetation of the
experimental s(w) dispersions indicates transitions between 3d and 4p states of
Fe ions to be the biggest ones. Qualitatively the line shape of the theoretical
optical conductivity coincides well with our experimental data. Calculated by
LSDA+U method magnetic moments per formula unit are found to be in good
agreement with observed experimental values of saturation magnetization.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Exact results of the mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different decorating spins of integer magnitudes
The mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different
decorating spins of the integer magnitudes S_B = 1 and S_C = 2 placed on
horizontal and vertical bonds of the lattice, respectively, is examined within
an exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration-iteration
mapping transformation. Besides the ground-state analysis, finite-temperature
properties of the system are also investigated in detail. The most interesting
numerical result to emerge from our study relates to a striking critical
behaviour of the spontaneously ordered 'quasi-1D' spin system. It was found
that this quite remarkable spontaneous order arises when one sub-lattice of the
decorating spins (either S_B or S_C) tends towards their 'non-magnetic' spin
state S = 0 and the system becomes disordered only upon further single-ion
anisotropy strengthening. The effect of single-ion anisotropy upon the
temperature dependence of the total and sub-lattice magnetization is also
particularly investigated.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Microstructural characterization of AISI 431 martensitic stainless steel laser-deposited coatings
High cooling rates during laser cladding of stainless steels may alter the microstructure and phase constitution of the claddings and consequently change their functional properties. In this research, solidification structures and solid state phase transformation products in single and multi layer AISI 431 martensitic stainless steel coatings deposited by laser cladding at different processing speeds are investigated by optical microscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), ternary phase diagram, Schaeffler and TTT diagrams. The results of this study show how partitionless solidification and higher solidification rates alter the microstructure and phase constitution of martensitic stainless steel laser deposited coatings. In addition, it is shown that while different cladding speeds have no effect on austenite–martensite orientation relationship in the coatings, increasing the cladding speed has resulted in a reduction of hardness in deposited coatings which is in contrast to the common idea about obtaining higher hardness values at higher cladding speeds.
New Family of Robust 2D Topological Insulators in van der Waals Heterostructures
We predict a new family of robust two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators
in van der Waals heterostructures comprising graphene and chalcogenides BiTeX
(X=Cl, Br and I). The layered structures of both constituent materials produce
a naturally smooth interface that is conducive to proximity induced new
topological states. First principles calculations reveal intrinsic
topologically nontrivial bulk energy gaps as large as 70-80 meV, which can be
further enhanced up to 120 meV by compression. The strong spin-orbit coupling
in BiTeX has a significant influence on the graphene Dirac states, resulting in
the topologically nontrivial band structure, which is confirmed by calculated
nontrivial Z2 index and an explicit demonstration of metallic edge states. Such
heterostructures offer an unique Dirac transport system that combines the 2D
Dirac states from graphene and 1D Dirac edge states from the topological
insulator, and it offers new ideas for innovative device designs
Crossover from thermal hopping to quantum tunneling in Mn_{12}Ac
The crossover from thermal hopping to quantum tunneling is studied. We show
that the decay rate with dissipation can accurately be determined near
the crossover temperature. Besides considering the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin
(WKB) exponent, we also calculate contribution of the fluctuation modes around
the saddle point and give an extended account of a previous study of crossover
region. We deal with two dangerous fluctuation modes whose contribution can't
be calculated by the steepest descent method and show that higher order
couplings between the two dangerous modes need to be taken into considerations.
At last the crossover from thermal hopping to quantum tunneling in the
molecular magnet Mn_{12}Ac is studied.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
