    The silkworm Bombyx mori L is known for the production of therapeutic bioactive enzymes. Studies were conducted to analyse the total protein content and enzyme activity of β- fructofuranosidase from the midgut region of five different races namely PM, NK2, CSR2, MH1 and RP9×NK2. Protein content was determined by Lowry’s method and enzyme activity was determined by DNS method. On analysis, the protein content and enzyme activity was found to be highest in RP9×NK2 and lowest in PM, in comparison to other races

    Role of visual inspection of cervix with acetic acid and high risk human papilloma virus DNA testing in screening for cervical cancer

    Background: To evaluate the role of VIA alone and in combination with high risk Human Papilloma virus DNA testing as a screening test for cervical dysplasia and cancer.Methods: 400 symptomatic patients from the gynecology outpatient department were screened using Pap smear and VIA. HPV DNA testing was done for 62 VIA positive and 100 VIA negative women. Colposcopy was done for all women. Those found positive on any or all of the screening tests were subjected to cervical biopsy. The results were analysed for PAP, VIA, HPV and a combined test using VIA and HPV both.Results: VIA had the highest sensitivity (91%) to detect any grade of dysplasia. The sensitivity of the combination test (VIA + HPV) was 80.6% which was lower than that of VIA (91%) and also lower than that of HR HPV DNA detection (86%). The specificity of the combination test (VIA + HPV) was 68.3 % which was significantly higher than that of VIA alone (39%) (p = 0.000) and also higher than that for HPV DNA detection when used alone (56%). Pap smear had the highest specificity (95.12 %) but sensitivity was much lower at 52.7 %.Conclusions: VIA is a highly sensitive screening test. The main disadvantage is its low specificity. However the combination test of VIA + HR HPV testing overcomes this and at the same time maintains a high sensitivity. Thus a test which combines VIA plus HR HPV testing is better screening method than either of the three tests (VIA, HPV, PAP) done alone

    Improvement of Hamstring Flexibility: A Comparison between Two PNF Stretching Techniques

    Objective: To determine the effectiveness of two PNF stretching techniques for improving hamstring flexibility and to compare the effectiveness of two PNF stretching techniques (Hold Relax and Contract Relax-Antagonist Contract) for improving hamstring flexibility. Subjects: 45 normal healthy male subjects. Design: A randomised pre-test post-test control group design. Method: The subjects were randomly assigned into three groups each consisting of 15 subjects. Hamstring flexibility for each group was measured using the active knee extension (AKE) test. Subjects of group A were treated with PNF hold relax stretching, whereas the subjects of group B were treated with PNF CRAC technique. The subjects of group C served as control group and were not subjected to any type of stretching. For each experimental group, stretch was performed three times a week for a total training period of three weeks. Results: A repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a Post HOC analysis using Bonferroni comparisons was used to determine and compare the effectiveness of two PNF stretching techniques at the end of 3 weeks of training protocol. The results demonstrated significant improvement in hamstring flexibility for subjects of group B when compared with those of group A (P = 0.03) at the end of three weeks, with improvement ranging from 0.50 to 15.66 degrees of active knee extension ROM at 95 % confidence interval. Conclusion: Both the techniques viz. PNF Hold Relax and PNF-CRAC are almost equal in their clinical effectiveness for improving hamstring flexibility and that either of the techniques may be used in clinical practice for improving hamstring flexibility

    Cbl and Cbl-b are tyrosine kinase-directed RING finger type ubiquitin ligases (E3s) that negatively regulate cellular activation pathways. E3 activity-disrupting human Cbl mutations are associated with myeloproliferative disorders (MPD) that are reproduced in mice with Cbl RING finger mutant knock-in or hematopoietic Cbl and Cbl-b double knockout. However, the role of Cbl proteins in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) homeostasis, especially in the context of MPD is unclear. Here we demonstrate that HSC expansion and MPD development upon combined Cbl and Cbl-b deletion are dependent on HSCs. Cell cycle analysis demonstrated that DKO HSCs exhibit reduced quiescence associated with compromised reconstitution ability and propensity to undergo exhaustion. We show that sustained c-Kit and FLT3 signaling in DKO HSCs promotes loss of colony-forming potential, and c-Kit or FLT3 inhibition in vitro protects HSCs from exhaustion. In vivo, treatment with 5-fluorouracil hastens DKO HSC exhaustion and protects mice from death due to MPD. Our data reveal a novel and leukemia therapy-relevant role of Cbl and Cbl-b in the maintenance of HSC quiescence and protection against exhaustion, through negative regulation of tyrosine kinase-coupled receptor signaling

    Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry parameter αb and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λ0b→J/ψ+Λ0 with the ATLAS detector

    A measurement of the parity-violating decay asymmetry parameter, αb, and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λb0→J/ψ(μ+μ-)Λ0(pπ-) is reported. The analysis is based on 1400 Λb0 and Λ¯b0 baryons selected in 4.6  fb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. By combining the Λb0 and Λ¯b0 samples under the assumption of CP conservation, the value of αb is measured to be 0.30±0.16(stat)±0.06(syst). This measurement provides a test of theoretical models based on perturbative QCD or heavy-quark effective theory.Fil: F. Monticelli.Fil: Atlas Collaboration

    Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb^-1 of pp collision data at sqrt(s)=7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96 +0.26 -0.30 at Q^2=1.9 GeV^2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio sigma(W^+ + bar{c})/sigma(W^- + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s-bar{s} quark asymmetry.Fil: ATLAS Collaboration, G.     Examination of direct-photon and pion production in proton-nucleon collisions

    We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions for photon and pion production and their ratio.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures.
