Universal optimal hole-doping concentration in single-layer high-temperature cuprate superconductors
We argue that in cuprate physics there are two types, hole content per
CuO plane () and the corresponding hole content per unit volume
(), of hole-doping concentrations for addressing physical properties
that are two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) in nature,
respectively. We find that superconducting transition temperature ()
varies systematically with as a superconducting \textquotedblleft
\textquotedblright with a universal optimal hole-doping concentration
= 1.6 10 cm for single-layer high
temperature superconductors. We suggest that determines the
upper bound of the electronic energy of underdoped single-layer high-
cuprates.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; added references ;accepted for the publication in

Quantum Bit Commitment with a Composite Evidence
Entanglement-based attacks, which are subtle and powerful, are usually
believed to render quantum bit commitment insecure. We point out that the no-go
argument leading to this view implicitly assumes the evidence-of-commitment to
be a monolithic quantum system. We argue that more general evidence structures,
allowing for a composite, hybrid (classical-quantum) evidence, conduce to
improved security. In particular, we present and prove the security of the
following protocol: Bob sends Alice an anonymous state. She inscribes her
commitment by measuring part of it in the + (for ) or (for
) basis. She then communicates to him the (classical) measurement outcome
and the part-measured anonymous state interpolated into other, randomly
prepared qubits as her evidence-of-commitment.Comment: 6 pages, minor changes, journal reference adde
Control of conditional pattern with polarization entanglement
Conditional interference patterns can be obtained with twin photons from
spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the phase of the pattern can be
controlled by the relative transverse position of the signal and idler
detectors. Using a configuration that produces entangled photons in both
polarization and transverse momentum we report on the control of the
conditional patterns by acting on the polarization degree of freedom.Comment: Submitted for publication in Optics Communication
Unitary Irreducible Representations of a Lie Algebra for Matrix Chain Models
There is a decomposition of a Lie algebra for open matrix chains akin to the
triangular decomposition. We use this decomposition to construct unitary
irreducible representations. All multiple meson states can be retrieved this
way. Moreover, they are the only states with a finite number of non-zero
quantum numbers with respect to a certain set of maximally commuting linearly
independent quantum observables. Any other state is a tensor product of a
multiple meson state and a state coming from a representation of a quotient
algebra that extends and generalizes the Virasoro algebra. We expect the
representation theory of this quotient algebra to describe physical systems at
the thermodynamic limit.Comment: 46 pages, no figure; LaTeX2e, amssymb, latexsym; typos correcte
Variational approximations to homoclinic snaking
We investigate the snaking of localised patterns, seen in numerous physical
applications, using a variational approximation. This method naturally
introduces the exponentially small terms responsible for the snaking structure,
that are not accessible via standard multiple-scales asymptotic techniques. We
obtain the symmetric snaking solutions and the asymmetric 'ladder' states, and
also predict the stability of the localised states. The resulting approximate
formulas for the width of the snaking region show good agreement with numerical
results.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitte
On-Line Learning with Restricted Training Sets: An Exactly Solvable Case
We solve the dynamics of on-line Hebbian learning in large perceptrons
exactly, for the regime where the size of the training set scales linearly with
the number of inputs. We consider both noiseless and noisy teachers. Our
calculation cannot be extended to non-Hebbian rules, but the solution provides
a convenient and welcome benchmark with which to test more general and advanced
theories for solving the dynamics of learning with restricted training sets.Comment: 19 pages, eps figures included, uses epsfig macr
Quantum feedback cooling of a single trapped ion in front of a mirror
We develop a theory of quantum feedback cooling of a single ion trapped in
front of a mirror. By monitoring the motional sidebands of the light emitted
into the mirror mode we infer the position of the ion, and act back with an
appropriate force to cool the ion. We derive a feedback master equation along
the lines of the quantum feedback theory developed by Wiseman and Milburn,
which provides us with cooling times and final temperatures as a function of
feedback gain and various system parameters.Comment: 15 pages, 11 Figure
