Effect of 13-cis-Retinoic Acid on the Hamster Flank Organ
Administration of 13-cis-retinoic acid subcutaneously to mature male hamsters produced a marked decrease in the size of the sebaceous glands of the flank organ, without diminution of other hormonally dependent structures of the flank organs. Subcutaneous administration of 13-cis-retinoic acid to female hamsters treated simultaneously with injections of testosterone enanthate prevented the androgen-induced growth of the flank organ sebaceous glands but did not prevent the growth of other hormonally dependent structures such as the dermal pigment cells and large pigmented hair follicles. The sebaceous gland progressively decreased during 3weeks of treatment and the effect persisted at least 3weeks after cessation of treatment but was completely reversed by 6 mos after treatment. In vitro studies of testosterone metabolism by hamster flank organ indicated the lack of inhibition of 5a-reduction by 13-cis-retinoic acid. It seems likely that systemically administered 13-cis-retinoic acid, unlike antiandrogens, exerts a specific extrahormonal effect on the sebaceous glands of the hamster flank organ without affecting other androgen dependent cells
Magnetic force microscopy of single crystal magnetite (Fe3O4)(abstract)
The micromagnetic domain structure of a magnetite (Fe3O4) single crystal has been studied using a magnetic force microscope (MFM). The MFM responds to the perpendicular component of the stray field above the magnetite surface. The sample was polished in the (011) plane. In this case, there are two easy magnetic axes parallel to the surface. Surface domains observed near cracks and edges have a complex closure structure (see Fig. 1), while walls seen far from such boundaries have a sinusoidal structure. Of particular interest is the presence of walls with either even or odd symmetry of the perpendicular stray field component across the transition. These can be conventionally modeled as Bloch or Neel walls, respectively. Both types of walls have been modeled and compared with the experimentally observed structures. We find the Bloch domain walls to be about 300 nm wide, nearly twice the value expected from bulk wall calculations. Positive psychology interventions in patients with medical illness: What predicts improvement in psychological state?
Positive psychology interventions (PPIs) have been shown to promote wellbeing in individuals with medical illness, although it is still unknown whether certain patient characteristics make participants more likely to benefit from such interventions. The present study tested whether, using individual patient data across five published PPI studies (three single-arm proof-of-concept trials, one non-randomized controlled trial, and one randomized controlled trial) in medically-ill persons, sociodemographic or psychological factors predicted subsequent change in wellbeing. In 208 participants, lower baseline psychological wellbeing and optimism, and higher symptoms of depression and anxiety were associated with greater improvement in psychological symptoms during the PPI. Other factors were unrelated to symptom changes. In a sub-analysis of controlled studies, there were no group differences in the relationship between baseline factors and changes in wellbeing from pre- to post-intervention. Findings suggest that patients with more severe psychiatric and/or medical comorbidity are no less likely to benefit from a PPI compared to those with higher levels of health, even though these programs do not directly target psychological distress. PPIs may be widely applicable to medical patients, with lower psychological wellbeing a potential predictor of increased benefit
Renal cell carcinoma: associations between tumor imaging features and epidemiological risk factors
Purpose: To investigate associations between imaging features of tumors and age, gender and body mass index (BMI) in patients with renal cell carcinoma. Method: This IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant study included 1348 patients with histopathologically confirmed renal cell carcinoma of the clear cell subtype (ccRCC, n = 904) or non-clear cell subtype (n = 444), who underwent pre-treatment CT imaging less than 180 days before nephrectomy between 1999 and 2011. Two radiologists independently, retrospectively analyzed all imaging studies and identified features (necrosis, renal vein invasion, contact with renal sinus fat, multicystic appearance and nodular enhancement), which were then correlated with patient age, gender and BMI at time of surgery. Results: Inter-reader agreement on imaging features ranged from substantial to excellent (kappa: 0.688 to 0.982). In the ccRCC group, multicystic tumor appearance was significantly associated with lower patient age (p < 0.05) and lower BMI (p < 0.05); the presence of renal vein invasion was significantly associated with lower BMI in males (p < 0.05); and both tumor contact with the renal sinus and nodular enhancement were significantly associated with greater patient age (p < 0.05). In the non-clear cell RCC group, necrosis was associated with lower BMI for females (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated significant associations between imaging features of RCC and patient age and BMI, hinting an influence of these factors on tumor biology and genomic make-up. These findings could aid future studies in selecting patients while investigating genomic, molecular and metabolic variables in RCC and might potentially impact on future stratification and therapy of patients
Diffraction of complex molecules by structures made of light
We demonstrate that structures made of light can be used to coherently
control the motion of complex molecules. In particular, we show diffraction of
the fullerenes C60 and C70 at a thin grating based on a standing light wave. We
prove experimentally that the principles of this effect, well known from atom
optics, can be successfully extended to massive and large molecules which are
internally in a thermodynamic mixed state and which do not exhibit narrow
optical resonances. Our results will be important for the observation of
quantum interference with even larger and more complex objects.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Unique and Overlapping Symptoms in Schizophrenia Spectrum and Dissociative Disorders in Relation to Models of Psychopathology:A Systematic Review
Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and dissociative disorders (DDs) are described in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and tenth edition of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) as 2 categorically distinct diagnostic categories. However, several studies indicate high levels of co-occurrence between these diagnostic groups, which might be explained by overlapping symptoms. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the research concerning overlap and differences in symptoms between schizophrenia spectrum and DDs. For this purpose the PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant literature. The literature contained a large body of evidence showing the presence of symptoms of dissociation in SSDs. Although there are quantitative differences between diagnoses, overlapping symptoms are not limited to certain domains of dissociation, nor to nonpathological forms of dissociation. In addition, dissociation seems to be related to a history of trauma in SSDs, as is also seen in DDs. There is also evidence showing that positive and negative symptoms typically associated with schizophrenia may be present in DD. Implications of these results are discussed with regard to different models of psychopathology and clinical practice
Hip joint replacement surgery for idiopathic osteoarthritis aggregates in families
In order to determine whether there is a genetic component to hip or knee joint failure due to idiopathic osteoarthritis (OA), we invited patients (probands) undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty for management of idiopathic OA to provide detailed family histories regarding the prevalence of idiopathic OA requiring joint replacement in their siblings. We also invited their spouses to provide detailed family histories about their siblings to serve as a control group. In the probands, we confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic OA using American College of Rheumatology criteria. The cohorts included the siblings of 635 probands undergoing total hip replacement, the siblings of 486 probands undergoing total knee replacement, and the siblings of 787 spouses. We compared the prevalence of arthroplasty for idiopathic OA among the siblings of the probands with that among the siblings of the spouses, and we used logistic regression to identify independent risk factors for hip and knee arthroplasty in the siblings. Familial aggregation for hip arthroplasty, but not for knee arthroplasty, was observed after controlling for age and sex, suggesting a genetic contribution to end-stage hip OA but not to end-stage knee OA. We conclude that attempts to identify genes that predispose to idiopathic OA resulting in joint failure are more likely to be successful in patients with hip OA than in those with knee OA
Genetic basis of octanoic acid resistance in Drosophila sechellia: functional analysis of a fine‐mapped region
Drosophila sechellia is a species of fruit fly endemic to the Seychelles islands. Unlike its generalist sister species, D. sechellia has evolved to be a specialist on the host plant Morinda citrifolia. This specialization is interesting because the plant’s fruit contains secondary defence compounds, primarily octanoic acid (OA), that are lethal to most other Drosophilids. Although ecological and behavioural adaptations to this toxic fruit are known, the genetic basis for evolutionary changes in OA resistance is not. Prior work showed that a genomic region on chromosome 3R containing 18 genes has the greatest contribution to differences in OA resistance between D. sechellia and D. simulans. To determine which gene(s) in this region might be involved in the evolutionary change in OA resistance, we knocked down expression of each gene in this region in D. melanogaster with RNA interference (RNAi) (i) ubiquitously throughout development, (ii) during only the adult stage and (iii) within specific tissues. We identified three neighbouring genes in the Osiris family, Osiris 6 (Osi6), Osi7 and Osi8, that led to decreased OA resistance when ubiquitously knocked down. Tissue‐specific RNAi, however, showed that decreasing expression of Osi6 and Osi7 specifically in the fat body and/or salivary glands increased OA resistance.
