Quantum dynamics of two bosons in an anharmonic trap: Collective vs internal excitations
This work deals with the effects of an anharmonic trap on an interacting
two-boson system in one dimension. Our primary focus is on the role of the
induced coupling between the center of mass and the relative motion as both
anharmonicity and the (repulsive) interaction strength are varied. The ground
state reveals a strong localization in the relative coordinate, counteracting
the tendency to fragment for stronger repulsion. To explore the quantum
dynamics, we study the system's response upon (i) exciting the harmonic ground
state by continuously switching on an additional anharmonicity, and (ii)
displacing the center of mass, this way triggering collective oscillations. The
interplay between collective and internal dynamics materializes in the collapse
of oscillations, which are explained in terms of few-mode models.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Articulatory Tradeoffs Reduce Acoustic Variability During American English /r/ Production
Acoustic and articulatory recordings reveal that speakers utilize systematic articulatory tradeoffs to maintain acoustic stability when producing the phoneme /r/. Distinct articulator configurations used to produce /r/ in various phonetic contexts show systematic tradeoffs between the cross-sectional areas of different vocal tract sections. Analysis of acoustic and articulatory variabilities reveals that these tradeoffs act to reduce acoustic variability, thus allowing large contextual variations in vocal tract shape; these contextual variations in turn apparently reduce the amount of articulatory movement required. Vision-Aided Autonomous Landing and Ingress of Micro Aerial Vehicles
Micro aerial vehicles have limited sensor suites and computational power. For reconnaissance tasks and to conserve energy, these systems need the ability to autonomously land at vantage points or enter buildings (ingress). But for autonomous navigation, information is needed to identify and guide the vehicle to the target. Vision algorithms can provide egomotion estimation and target detection using input from cameras that are easy to include in miniature systems
Trauma as counter-revolutionary colonisation: narratives from (post)revolutionary Egypt
We argue that multiple levels of trauma were present in Egypt before, during and after the 2011 revolution. Individual, social and political trauma constitute a triangle of traumatisation which was strategically employed by the Egyptian counter-revolutionary forces – primarily the army and the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood – to maintain their political and economic power over and above the social, economic and political interests of others. Through the destruction of physical bodies, the fragmentation and polarisation of social relations and the violent closure of the newly emerged political public sphere, these actors actively repressed the potential for creative and revolutionary transformation. To better understand this multi-layered notion of trauma, we turn to Habermas’ ‘colonisation of the lifeworld’ thesis which offers a critical lens through which to examine the wider political and economic structures and context in which trauma occurred as well as its effects on the personal, social and political realms. In doing so, we develop a novel conception of trauma that acknowledges individual, social and political dimensions. We apply this conceptual framing to empirical narratives of trauma in Egypt’s pre- and post-revolutionary phases, thus both developing a non-Western application of Habermas’ framework and revealing ethnographic accounts of the revolution by activists in Cairo
Distribution of Eigenvalues for the Modular Group
The two-point correlation function of energy levels for free motion on the
modular domain, both with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, are
explicitly computed using a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood method. It

In this paper we analyze finite dimensional variational regularization, which
takes into account operator approximations and noisy data: We show
(semi-)convergence of the regularized solution of the finite dimensional
problems and establish convergence rates in terms of Bregman distances under
appropriate sourcewise representation of a solution of the equation. The more
involved case of regularization in nonseparable Banach spaces is discussed in

Design of an Agile Unmanned Combat Vehicle - A Product of the DARPA UGCV Program
The unmanned ground combat vehicle (UGCV) design evolved by the SAIC team on the DARPA UGCV Program is summarized in this paper. This UGCV design provides exceptional performance against all of the program metrics and incorporates key attributes essential for high performance robotic combat vehicles. This performance includes protection against 7.62 mm threats, C130 and CH47 transportability, and the ability to accept several relevant weapons payloads, as well as advanced sensors and perception algorithms evolving from the PerceptOR program. The UGCV design incorporates a combination of technologies and design features, carefully selected through detailed trade studies, which provide optimum performance against mobility, payload, and endurance goals without sacrificing transportability, survivability, or life cycle cost. The design was optimized to maximize performance against all Category I metrics. In each case, the performance of this design was validated with detailed simulations, indicating that the vehicle exceeded the Category I metrics. Mobility metrics were analyzed using high fidelity VisualNastran vehicle models, which incorporate the suspension control algorithms and controller cycles times. DADS/Easy 5 3-D models and ADAMS simulations were also used to validate vehicle dynamics and control algorithms during obstacle negotiation
Billiard Systems in Three Dimensions: The Boundary Integral Equation and the Trace Formula
We derive semiclassical contributions of periodic orbits from a boundary
integral equation for three-dimensional billiard systems. We use an iterative
method that keeps track of the composition of the stability matrix and the
Maslov index as an orbit is traversed. Results are given for isolated periodic
orbits and rotationally invariant families of periodic orbits in axially
symmetric billiard systems. A practical method for determining the stability
