    Controlled biomineralization of magnetite (Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>) by <i>Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense</i>

    Results from a study of the chemical composition and micro-structural characteristics of bacterial magnetosomes extracted from the magnetotactic bacterial strain Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense are presented here. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy combined with selected-area electron diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, biogenic magnetite particles isolated from mature cultures were analysed for variations in crystallinity and particle size, as well as chain character and length. The analysed crystals showed a narrow size range (∼14-67 nm) with an average diameter of 46±6.8 nm, cuboctahedral morphologies and typical Gamma type crystal size distributions. The magnetite particles exhibited a high chemical purity (exclusively Fe3O4) and the majority fall within the single-magnetic-domain range

    Incidental durotomy in lumbar spine surgery: Incidence, risk factors and management

    Incidental durotomy is a common complication of lumbar spine operations for degenerative disorders. Its incidence varies depending on several risk factors and regarding the intra and postoperative management, there is no consensus. Our objective was to report our experience with incidental durotomy in patients who were operated on for lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis and revision surgeries. Between 2009 and 2012, 1259 patients were operated on for degenerative lumbar disorders. For primary operations, the surgical approach was mino-open, interlamar, uni- or bilateral, as for recurrences, the removal of the compressive element was intended: the epidural scar and the disc fragment. 863 patients (67,7%) were operated on for lumbar disc herniation, 344 patients (27,3%) were operated on for lumbar spinal stenosis and 52 patients (5%) were operated for recurrences. The operations were performed by neurosurgeons with the same professional degree but with different operative volume. Unintentional durotomy occurred in 20 (2,3%) of the patients with herniated disc, in 14 (4,07%) of the patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and in 12 (23%) of the patients who were operated on for recurrences. The most frequent risk factors were: obesity, revised surgery and the physician’s low operative volume. Intraoperative dural fissures were repaired through suture (8 cases), by applying muscle, fat graft or by applying curaspon, tachosil. There existed 4 CSF fistulas which were repaired at reoperation. Incidental dural fissures during operations for degenerative lumbar disorders must be recognized and immediately repaired to prevent complications such as CSF fistula, osteodiscitis and increased medical costs. Preventing, identifying and treating unintentional durotomies can be best achieved by respecting a neat surgical technique and a standardized treatment protocol

Improving socialization through motor games is, perhaps, a solution to many problems, as children align emotionally, emotionally, volitionally, physically, cognitively, etc. The study was conducted on a sample of 59 students aged 6 to 9 years. The sociometric technique was used to determine negative, positive, and neutral interpersonal relationships by age level before and after the use of the chosen motor games. The index of preferred status, cohesion index, arithmetic mean and progress rate were used for statistical interpretation

    Reducing the development gaps between regions in Poland with the use of European Union funds

    The paper evaluates the processes of regional income convergence in Poland. This new research approach involves an attempt to assess the process of convergence from the point of view of development gaps. Six key development gaps were considered in the region of Eastern Poland, which is a singular case, significantly different from other regions. A dynamic panel data model was applied to investigate the impact of EU funds on the progress made towards closing these development gaps. Among the analysed development gaps, only the structural gap was not reduced in the period 2004–2015. Studies have also revealed the different impact of structural funds on each category of development gaps (a positive impact on reducing the regional transport accessibility gap and the investment gap, but negative – on reducing the innovation gap). Research has suggested the need for a change in the structure of using EU funds in the period 2014–2020 to favour stronger support for entrepreneurship and the creation of new jobs. Greater stimulation of the economic structure of peripheral regions has been proposed as the prerequisite for the future reduction in the discrepancies between regions and for the intensification of convergence.     We report a Monte Carlo simulation based on the Lebwohl-Lasher model for characterizing the molecular director configuration in a nematic liquid crystal having a spherocylindrical particle immersed inside. We describe the molecular orientation and spatial behavior of the order parameter and we retrieve the presence of a disclination line with the shape of the Saturn ring defect. By applying an electric field, the order inside the simulation cell is considerably changed and we find that the plane of the disclination line is moved perpendicular to the field direction. As the intensity of the field is increaseed the disclination line eventually disappears, the order inside the cell becoming uniaxial
