Study of high altitude plume impingement
Computer program has been developed as analytical tool to predict severity of effects of exhaust of rocket engines on adjacent spacecraft surfaces. Program computes forces, moments, pressures, and heating rates on surfaces immersed in or subjected to exhaust plume environments. Predictions will be useful in design of systems where such problems are anticipated
The effect of distance on observed mortality, childhood pneumonia and vaccine efficacy in rural Gambia.
We investigated whether straight-line distance from residential compounds to healthcare facilities influenced mortality, the incidence of pneumonia and vaccine efficacy against pneumonia in rural Gambia. Clinical surveillance for pneumonia was conducted on 6938 children living in the catchment areas of the two largest healthcare facilities. Deaths were monitored by three-monthly home visits. Children living >5 km from the two largest healthcare facilities had a 2·78 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1·74-4·43] times higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to children living within 2 km of these facilities. The observed rate of clinical and radiological pneumonia was lower in children living >5 km from these facilities compared to those living within 2 km [rate ratios 0·65 (95% CI 0·57-0·73) and 0·74 (95% CI 0·55-0·98), respectively]. There was no association between distance and estimated pneumococcal vaccine efficacy. Geographical access to healthcare services is an important determinant of survival and pneumonia in children in rural Gambia

Thermal dependence of the zero-bias conductance through a nanostructure
We show that the conductance of a quantum wire side-coupled to a quantum dot,
with a gate potential favoring the formation of a dot magnetic moment, is a
universal function of the temperature. Universality prevails even if the
currents through the dot and the wire interfere. We apply this result to the

The Holbrook Meteorite - 99 Years Out in the Weather
At 7:15pm on the evening of 19th July 1912, a bright fireball appeared in the sky above Navajo County, Arizona [1]. After several loud detonations, approximately 16,000 mostly pea-sized stones fell near the Arntz siding of the Santa Fe Railroad, 7 miles from the town of Holbrook. A search orchestrated by W.M.Foote resulted in nearly 220 kg of material being recovered; samples were exchanged with a great many of the World's Museums [2]. In 1931 Harvey Nininger revisited the site and was able to find another 23 kg that had originally been missed [3]. One of us (EKG) returned again in 1968 and found a further ca 1.5 kg specimen [4]. Meteorite hunters have been going back to Holbrook ever since in the hope of more finds. For example in 2001 a group of 45 searchers accumulated 440 g of previously overlooked L6 group meteorite fragments. In 2011, the 99th anniversary of the event, Rubin Garcia located 11 mini-meteorites [5]
Seasonal abundance of small cladocerans in Lake Mangakaware, Waikato, New Zealand
The seasonal changes in the dynamics and life histories of the Cladocera in Lake Mangakaware, North Island, New Zealand, were studied over 19 months by sampling at weekly or 2-weekly intervals. Lake Mangakaware is a 13.3 ha polymictic lake with high nutrient status, low Secchi disc transparencies, and an unstable thermal regime. The four planktonic cladoceran species (Bosmina longirostris, B. meridionalis, Ceriodaphnia pulchella, and C. dubia) exhibited disjunct population maxima. Only B. longirostris was perennially present. All species exhibited low fecundities and low lipid content, indicating that food resources were limited and that competitive interactions and resistance to starvation were probably important in determining species success. Increases in body size in cooler seasons were unrelated to clutch size, giving further support for the view that available food was limited. These results are consistent with previous experimental findings that subtle differences in life history can determine seasonal success and the outcome of competition between similar species
Colligative properties of solutions: I. Fixed concentrations
Using the formalism of rigorous statistical mechanics, we study the phenomena
of phase separation and freezing-point depression upon freezing of solutions.
Specifically, we devise an Ising-based model of a solvent-solute system and
show that, in the ensemble with a fixed amount of solute, a macroscopic phase
separation occurs in an interval of values of the chemical potential of the
solvent. The boundaries of the phase separation domain in the phase diagram are
characterized and shown to asymptotically agree with the formulas used in
heuristic analyses of freezing point depression. The limit of infinitesimal

'Parasitic invasions' or sources of good governance: constraining foreign competition in Hong Kong banking, 1956-81
This paper investigates the operation and impact of the moratorium on new banking licences imposed in Hong Kong in 1965 and the claims that foreign banks destabilised the banking system and drained resources from the colony. First it examines foreign banks' attempts to circumvent the moratorium through claims of special circumstances and buying interests in local banks, and secondly it examines the efforts of incumbents to extend barriers to non-bank financial institutions and to branches of foreign banks. The general conclusions are that while the moratorium was aimed at increasing the stability of the banking system, it had the effect of decreasing the regulatory breadth of the government, and reducing incentives for mergers and acquisitions that might have improved governance
Adhesive Contact to a Coated Elastic Substrate
We show how the quasi-analytic method developed to solve linear elastic
contacts to coated substrates (Perriot A. and Barthel E. {\em J. Mat. Res.},
{\bf 2004}, {\em 19}, 600) may be extended to adhesive contacts. Substrate
inhomogeneity lifts accidental degeneracies and highlights the general
structure of the adhesive contact theory. We explicit the variation of the
contact variables due to substrate inhomogeneity. The relation to other
approaches based on Finite Element analysis is discussed
