Negative capacitance in organic semiconductor devices: bipolar injection and charge recombination mechanism

We report negative capacitance at low frequencies in organic semiconductor based diodes and show that it appears only under bipolar injection conditions. We account quantitatively for this phenomenon by the recombination current due to electron-hole annihilation. Simple addition of the recombination current to the well established model of space charge limited current in the presence of traps, yields excellent fits to the experimentally measured admittance data. The dependence of the extracted characteristic recombination time on the bias voltage is indicative of a recombination process which is mediated by localized traps.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Applied Physics Letter

This paper presents a detailed study on the role of various annealing treatments on organic poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester blends under different experimental conditions. A combination of analytical tools is used to study the alteration of the phase separation, structure and photovoltaic properties of the P3HT:PCBM blend during the annealing process. Results showed that the thermal annealing yields PCBM ‘‘needle-like’’ crystals and that prolonged heat treatment leads to extensive phase separation, as demonstrated by the growth in the size and quantity of PCBM crystals. The substrate annealing method demonstrated an optimal morphology by eradicating and suppressing the formation of fullerene clusters across the film, resulting in longer P3HT fibrils with smaller diameter. Improved optical constants, PL quenching and a decrease in the P3HT optical bad-gap were demonstrated for the substrate annealed films due to the limited diffusion of the PCBM molecules. An effective strategy for determining an optimized morphology through substrate annealing treatment is therefore revealed for improved device efficiency.Web of Scienc

Charge transfer excitons in low band gap polymer based solar cells and the role of processing additives

Organic semiconductor blends yielding efficient charge generation and transport are key components for the development of high performance organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells. In this paper the effect of the processing additive octane-dithiol on the charge transfer emission in poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is investigated. Despite the fact that blends processed with and without additive show a ground state charge transfer optical absorption only the blend processed without additive shows a corresponding charge transfer emission. The presented experimental data show that the nano-morphology of the bulk-heterojunction blends plays an important role for the formation of emissive charge transfer excitons, and that it is a loss channel in the studied solar cells.
