    A Note on Schanuel's Conjectures for Exponential Logarithmic Power Series Fields

    In [1], J. Ax proved a transcendency theorem for certain differential fields of characteristic zero: the differential counterpart of the still open Schanuel's conjecture about the exponential function over the field of complex numbers [11, page 30]. In this article, we derive from Ax's theorem transcendency results in the context of differential valued exponential fields.     On the controllability of fermentation systems

    This thesis concerns the controllability of fermentation processes. Fermentation processes are often described by unstructured process models. A control system can be used to reduce the effect of the uncertainties and disturbances. A process is called controllable if a control system satisfying suitably defined control objectives can be found. Controllability measures based on linear process models are identified. The idealised control objective for perfect control allows fast evaluation of the controllability measures. These measures are applied to compare different designs of a continuous fermentation process by identifying the controllability properties of the process design. The operational mode of fed batch fermentations is inherently dynamic. General control system design methods are not readily applicable to such systems. This work presents an approach for the design of robust controllers suitable for these processes. The control objective is to satisfy a set of robustness constraints for a given set of model uncertainties and disturbances. The optimal operation and design problems are combined into a single optimal control problem. The controller design is integrated into the process design problem formulation. In this way the control system and the process are designed simultaneously. Different problem formulations are investigated. The proposed approach is demonstrated on complex fermentation models. The resulting operating strategies are controllable with respect to the aims of control

Let KK be a closed subset of Rn\reals^n, and let M:=M{g1,...gs}M:=M_{\{g_1, ... g_s\}} be a finitely generated quadratic module in \rx. We investigate the following question: When is the cone \Pos(K) (of polynomials nonnegative on KK) included in the closure of MM? We give an interpretation of this inclusion with respect to representing continuous linear functionals by measures. We discuss several examples; we compute the closure of M=\sos with respect to weighted norm-pp topologies. We show that this closure coincides with the cone \Pos(K) where KK is a certain convex compact polyhedron.Comment: 14 page

The purpose of this project was to receive feedback from participants to determine if it would be a successful and viable way to engage small business-owners in the Creative Problem-Solving process. In addition, this curriculum aimed to provide a platform for building community and making space for participants to become creatively energetic in the way they perceive future goal/wish/challenges. The development and implementation of this curriculum and the positive feedback from group members confirmed that this program can be a valuable offering for small businesses to experience

    The heat transfer across the free surface of a millimetric thermocapillary liquid bridge is investigated for two dimensional axisymmetric flows, computed by Newton–Raphson iteration. The coupled multiphase flow in the silicone-oil liquid bridge and in the ambient gas (air) is considered for Marangoni and Prandtl numbers of interest for typical space experiments. Based on the space-resolved heat flux of the two-phase flow for a wide range of parameters, we derive a model for the heat flux in form of Newton’s heat transfer law for a surrogate single phase flow, in which a space-dependent Biot function is considered. A parametric study for a 2 St silicone-oil liquid bridge is conducted for 150 configurations to derive a reliable fit of the Biot function for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and aspect ratios. An explicit form of the parametric fit is provided which takes into account the hot- and cold-wall boundary layers in the liquid

    Multilevel correlates of household anthropometric typologies in Colombian mothers and their infants

    Background. The aim of this study was to establish the association of maternal, family, and contextual correlates of anthropometric typologies at the household level in Colombia using 2005 Demographic Health Survey (DHS/ENDS) data.Methods. Household-level information from mothers 18-49 years old and their children less than 5 years old was included. Stunting and overweight were assessed for each child. Mothers were classified according to their body mass index. Four anthropometric typologies at the household level were constructed: normal, underweight, overweight, and dual burden. Four three-level [households (n = 8598) nested within municipalities (n = 226), nested within states (n = 32)] hierarchical polytomous logistic models were developed. Household log-odds of belonging to one of the four anthropometric categories, holding 'normal' as the reference group, were obtained.Results. This study found that anthropometric typologies were associated with maternal and family characteristics of maternal age, parity, maternal education, and wealth index. Higher municipal living conditions index was associated with a lower likelihood of underweight typology and a higher likelihood of overweight typology. Higher population density was associated with a lower likelihood of overweight typology.Conclusion. Distal and proximal determinants of the various anthropometric typologies at the household level should be taken into account when framing policies and designing interventions to reduce malnutrition in Colombia.
