Orbifold resolutions with general profile
A very general class of resolved versions of the C/Z_N, T^2/Z_N and S^1/Z_2
orbifolds is considered and the free theory of 6D chiral fermions studied on
it. As the orbifold limit is taken, localized 4D chiral massless fermions are
seen to arise at the fixed points. Their number, location and chirality is
found to be independent on the detailed profile of the resolving space and to
agree with the result of hep-th/0409229, in which a particular resolution was
employed. As a consistency check of the resolution procedure, the massive
equation is numerically studied. In particular, for S^1/Z_2, the "resolved"
mass--spectrum and wave functions in the internal space are seen to correctly

Modulus stabilization of generalized Randall Sundrum model with bulk scalar field
We study the stabilization of inter-brane spacing modulus of generalized
warped brane models with a nonzero brane cosmological constant. Employing
Goldberger-Wise stabilization prescription of brane world models with a bulk
scalar field, we show that the stabilized value of the modulus generally
depends on the value of the brane cosmological constant. Our result further
reveals that the stabilized modulus value corresponding to a vanishingly small
cosmological constant can only resolve the gauge hierarchy problem
simultaneously. This in turn vindicates the original Randall-Sundrum model

Scalar Kaluza-Klein modes in a multiply warped braneworld
The Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of a massive scalar field on a 3-brane embedded
in six dimensional multiply warped spacetime are determined. Due to the
presence of warping along both the extra dimensions the KK mass spectrum splits
into two closely spaced branches which is a distinct feature of this model
compared to the five dimensional Randall-Sundrum model. This new cluster of the
KK mode spectrum is expected to have interesting phenomenological implications
for the upcoming collider experiments. Such a scenario may also be extended for
even larger number of orbifolded extra dimensions.Comment: 10 pages, Revte

We propose new braneworld models arising from a scalar field in the bulk. In
these examples, the induced on--brane line element is de Sitter (or anti de
Sitter) and the bulk (five dimensional) Einstein equations can be exactly
solved to obtain warped spacetimes. The solutions thus derived are single and
two-brane models -- one with {\em thin} branes while the other one of the {\em
thick} variety. The field profiles and the potentials are obtained and analysed
for each case. We note that for the {\em thick} brane scenario the field
profile resembles a kink, whereas for one or more {\em thin} branes, it is
finite and bounded in the domain of the extra dimension. We have also addressed
the localisation of gravity and other matter fields on the brane for these

Telomerase inhibition by siRNA causes senescence and apoptosis in Barrett's adenocarcinoma cells: mechanism and therapeutic potential
BACKGROUND: In cancer cells, telomerase induction helps maintain telomere length and thereby bypasses senescence and provides enhanced replicative potential. Chemical inhibitors of telomerase have been shown to reactivate telomere shortening and cause replicative senescence and apoptotic cell death of tumor cells while having little or no effect on normal diploid cells. RESULTS: We designed siRNAs against two different regions of telomerase gene and evaluated their effect on telomere length, proliferative potential, and gene expression in Barrett's adenocarcinoma SEG-1 cells. The mixture of siRNAs in nanomolar concentrations caused a loss of telomerase activity that appeared as early as day 1 and was essentially complete at day 3. Inhibition of telomerase activity was associated with marked reduction in median telomere length and complete loss of detectable telomeres in more than 50% of the treated cells. Telomere loss caused senescence in 40% and apoptosis in 86% of the treated cells. These responses appeared to be associated with activation of DNA sensor HR23B and subsequent activation of p53 homolog p73 and p63 and E2F1. Changes in these gene regulators were probably the source of observed up-regulation of cell cycle inhibitors, p16 and GADD45. Elevated transcript levels of FasL, Fas and caspase 8 that activate death receptors and CARD 9 that interacts with Bcl10 and NFKB to enhance mitochondrial translocation and activation of caspase 9 were also observed. CONCLUSION: These studies show that telomerase siRNAs can cause effective suppression of telomerase and telomere shortening leading to both cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via mechanisms that include up-regulation of several genes involved in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Telomerase siRNAs may therefore be strong candidates for highly selective therapy for chemoprevention and treatment of Barrett's adenocarcinoma
Cosmology and Fermion Confinement in a Scalar-Field-Generated Domain Wall Brane in Five Dimensions
We consider a brane generated by a scalar field domain wall configuration in
4+1 dimensions, interpolating, in most cases, between two vacua of the field.
We study the cosmology of such a system in the cases where the effective
four-dimensional brane metric is de Sitter or anti de Sitter, including a
discussion of the bulk coordinate singularities present in the de-Sitter case.
We demonstrate that a scalar field kink configuration can support a brane with
dS cosmology, despite the presence of coordinate singularities in the
metric. We examine the trapping of fermion fields on the domain wall for

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Based Thin Film Sensor for Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds
A thin film sensor for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC) was fabricated by deposition of oligo-aniline grafted tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) onto a glass substrate. The oligo-aniline motifs were conjugated onto the TMV surface by a traditional diazonium coupling reaction to tyrosine residues followed by Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The modified TMV was easily fabricated into a thin film by directly drop coating onto a glass substrate. Upon integration of the glass substrate into a prototypical device, the virus-based thin film exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity toward ethanol and methanol vapour
