Design and commissioning of a timestamp-based data acquisition system for the DRAGON recoil mass separator
The DRAGON recoil mass separator at TRIUMF exists to study radiative proton
and alpha capture reactions, which are important in a variety of astrophysical
scenarios. DRAGON experiments require a data acquisition system that can be
triggered on either reaction product ( ray or heavy ion), with the
additional requirement of being able to promptly recognize coincidence events
in an online environment. To this end, we have designed and implemented a new
data acquisition system for DRAGON which consists of two independently
triggered readouts. Events from both systems are recorded with timestamps from
a MHz clock that are used to tag coincidences in the earliest possible
stage of the data analysis. Here we report on the design, implementation, and
commissioning of the new DRAGON data acquisition system, including the
hardware, trigger logic, coincidence reconstruction algorithm, and live time
considerations. We also discuss the results of an experiment commissioning the
new system, which measured the strength of the
keV resonance in the NeNa radiative proton

The effect of the GLP-1 analogue Exenatide on functional connectivity within an NTS-based network in women with and without obesity.
ObjectiveThe differential effect of GLP-1 agonist Exenatide on functional connectivity of the nucleus tractus solitaries (NTS), a key region associated with homeostasis, and on appetite-related behaviours was investigated in women with normal weight compared with women with obesity.MethodsFollowing an 8-h fast, 19 female subjects (11 lean, 8 obese) participated in a 2-d double blind crossover study. Subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging at fast and 30-min post subcutaneous injection of 5 μg of Exenatide or placebo. Functional connectivity was examined with the NTS. Drug-induced functional connectivity changes within and between groups and correlations with appetite measures were examined in a region of interest approach focusing on the thalamus and hypothalamus.ResultsWomen with obesity reported less hunger after drug injection. Exenatide administration increased functional connectivity of the left NTS with the left thalamus and hypothalamus in the obese group only and increased the correlation between NTS functional connectivity and hunger scores in all subjects, but more so in the obese.ConclusionsObesity can impact the effects of Exenatide on brain connectivity, specifically in the NTS and is linked to changes in appetite control. This has implications for the use of GLP-1 analogues in therapeutic interventions
Superclustering at Redshift Z=0.54
We present strong evidence for the existence of a supercluster at a redshift
of z=0.54 in the direction of Selected Area 68. From the distribution of
galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts we find that there is a large
over-density of galaxies (a factor of four over the number expected in an
unclustered universe) within the redshift range 0.530 < z < 0.555. By
considering the spatial distribution of galaxies within this redshift range
(using spectroscopic and photometric redshifts) we show that the galaxies in
SA68 form a linear structure passing from the South-West of the survey field
through to the North-East (with a position angle of approximately 35 deg East
of North). This position angle is coincident with the positions of the X-ray
clusters CL0016+16, RX J0018.3+1618 and a new X-ray cluster, RX J0018.8+1602,
centered near the radio source 54W084. All three of these sources are at a
redshift of approximately z=0.54 and have position angles, derived from their
X-ray photon distributions, consistent with that measured for the supercluster.
Assuming a redshift of 0.54 for the distribution of galaxies and a FWHM
dispersion in redshift of 0.020 this represents a coherent structure with a
radial extent of 31 Mpc, transverse dimension of 12 Mpc, and a thickness of
approximately 4 Mpc. The detection of this possible supercluster demonstrates
the power of using X-ray observations, combined with multicolor observations,
to map the large scale distribution of galaxies at intermediate redshifts.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Latex, aaspp4.sty, accepted for publication in
