The color of transformation: Investigations into heat treatment of Natufian artifacts from Hayonim Terrace (Israel)
In the Natufian lithic component at Hayonim, both in the cave and the terrace, numerous artifacts of pink/red color may be recognized. Cherts with similar appearance are not present in the geological environment surrounding the site in Northern Israel. Pink chert available in Jordan is shown to be of different nature. Thus this leaves us with the hypothesis of intentional heat treatment of locally available iron-rich yellow chert, of Cenomanian age. Based on experimental replication of chert firing and SEM analysis, we argue that a well-mastered and controlled use of fire was practiced by some skilled craftsmen at Hayonim throughtout the Late Epipalaeolithic
A new automated workflow for 3D character creation based on 3D scanned data
In this paper we present a new workflow allowing the creation of 3D characters in an automated way that does not require the expertise of an animator. This workflow is based of the acquisition of real human data captured by 3D body scanners, which is them processed to generate firstly animatable body meshes, secondly skinned body meshes and finally textured 3D garments
Stochastic Modeling of Hybrid Cache Systems
In recent years, there is an increasing demand of big memory systems so to
perform large scale data analytics. Since DRAM memories are expensive, some
researchers are suggesting to use other memory systems such as non-volatile
memory (NVM) technology to build large-memory computing systems. However,
whether the NVM technology can be a viable alternative (either economically and
technically) to DRAM remains an open question. To answer this question, it is
important to consider how to design a memory system from a "system
perspective", that is, incorporating different performance characteristics and
price ratios from hybrid memory devices.
This paper presents an analytical model of a "hybrid page cache system" so to
understand the diverse design space and performance impact of a hybrid cache
system. We consider (1) various architectural choices, (2) design strategies,
and (3) configuration of different memory devices. Using this model, we provide
guidelines on how to design hybrid page cache to reach a good trade-off between
high system throughput (in I/O per sec or IOPS) and fast cache reactivity which
is defined by the time to fill the cache. We also show how one can configure
the DRAM capacity and NVM capacity under a fixed budget. We pick PCM as an
example for NVM and conduct numerical analysis. Our analysis indicates that
incorporating PCM in a page cache system significantly improves the system
performance, and it also shows larger benefit to allocate more PCM in page
cache in some cases. Besides, for the common setting of performance-price ratio
of PCM, "flat architecture" offers as a better choice, but "layered
architecture" outperforms if PCM write performance can be significantly

Observation of enhanced optical spring damping in a macroscopic mechanical resonator and application for parametric instability control in advanced gravitational-wave detectors
We show that optical spring damping in an optomechanical resonator can be enhanced by injecting a phase delay in the laser frequency-locking servo to rotate the real and imaginary components of the optical spring constant. This enhances damping at the expense of optical rigidity. We demonstrate enhanced parametric damping which reduces the Q factor of a 0.1-kg-scale resonator from 1.3Ă—10^5 to 6.5Ă—10^3. By using this technique adequate optical spring damping can be obtained to damp parametric instability predicted for advanced laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors
