    Assessing and benchmarking the performance of advanced building facades

    This chapter describes the energy demand reshaping and supply technologies that may be encapsulated within an advanced building façade - for example, transparent and breathable insulation, advanced glazing, daylight capture, photovoltaic components and ducted wind turbines. Laboratory testing techniques for the characterisation of the fundamental parameters underlying each technology are elaborated as the essential prerequisite of integrated performance appraisals of specific technology combinations within an advanced façade design context. Based on the results from simulations undertaken in the UK climate context, performance benchmarks are suggested for some principal façade configurations

    Darwinian transformation of a 'scarcely nutritious fluid' into milk

    In an early challenge to an aspect of Darwin’s theory of natural selection, Jackson Mivart contended that milk could not have evolved ‘from a scarcely nutritious fluid from an accidentally hypertrophied cutaneous gland’. The evolutionary change from a gland secretion to milk involves an increase in calcium and protein concentrations by up to 100- and 1000-fold, respectively. Even so, the challenge, we suggest, is not just a problem of scale. An increase in the concentrations of calcium and phosphate brings an increased risk of calcification of the secretory gland because calcium phosphate is highly insoluble. In addition, two of the four constituent milk casein proteins (κ and αS2) aggregate to produce toxic amyloid fibrils. It is proposed that both problems were solved through the cosecretion of ancestral β- and κ-caseins to form a stable amorphous aggregate of both proteins with sequestered amorphous calcium phosphate, that is, a primordial casein micelle. Evolutionarily, a gradual increase in the concentration of casein micelles could therefore produce progressively more nutritious fluids for the neonate without endangering the reproductive potential of the mother

    Lately, the built environment has been witnessing a lot of hazards ranging from collapsed buildings and bridges, floods and typhoons, droughts and landslides, as well as fire, tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes. Others are hazards launched through technology such as bio-terrorism and cyber-terrorism. Thus, necessity is place on Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry to prevent the "sick building" syndrome and make the built environment safe, secure, and healthy for mankind. This paper attempts to examine the immediate and remote causes of fail and sick buildings with a view to proffering solutions through the use of technology. Furthermore, the paper presents the application of the available technologies such as e-construction, Geographical Information System (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) and the Global Positioning System (CPS) to the built environment. An integrated design environment within the AEC industry is proposed to allow for modeling, designing, analyzing, and visualizing structures. Thus, the behaviour of structures can be modeled through "virtual reality", leading to the creation of "smart buildings", which are design concepts for this generation

    Using honey to heal diabetic foot ulcers

    Diabetic ulcers seem to be arrested in the inflammatory/proliferative stage of the healing process, allowing infection and inflammation to preclude healing. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a major cause of infections, including diabetic foot infections. It is proposed here that the modern developments of an ancient and traditional treatment for wounds, dressing them with honey, provide the solution to the problem of getting diabetic ulcers to move on from the arrested state of healing. Honeys selected to have a high level of antibacterial activity have been shown to be very effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria in laboratory and clinical studies. The potent anti-inflammatory action of honey is also likely to play an important part in overcoming the impediment to healing that inflammation causes in diabetic ulcers, as is the antioxidant activity of honey. The action of honey in promotion of tissue regeneration through stimulation of angiogenesis and the growth of fibroblasts and epithelial cells, and its insulin-mimetic effect, would also be of benefit in stimulating the healing of diabetic ulcers. The availability of honey-impregnated dressings which conveniently hold honey in place on ulcers has provided a means of rapidly debriding ulcers and removing the bacterial burden so that good healing rates can be achieved with neuropathic ulcers. With ischemic ulcers, where healing cannot occur because of lack of tissue viability, these honey dressings keep the ulcers clean and prevent infection occurring

    Nutrients Export by Rivers to the Coastal Waters of Africa: Past and Future trends

    We analyze past and future trends in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C) export by rivers to the coastal waters of Africa as calculated by the Global Nutrient Export to WaterShed (NEWS) models for the period 1970–2050. Between 1970 and 2000 the total nutrient export by African rivers increased by 10–80%. For future years (2000–2050) we calculate an increase in the total loads of dissolved forms of N and P, but decreasing trends for dissolved organic C and particulate forms of N and P. There are large regions that deviate from these pan-African trends. We explore the regional patterns and the underlying processes, in particular for the Nile, Zaire, Niger, and Zambezi. In the future, anthropogenic sources may, in large parts of Africa, become larger contributors to riverine nutrient loads than natural source

    The tonometric sensor, a new device for the measurement of intraocular pressure

    In this paper we present a new sensor for the measurement of intraocular pressure. We have applied the indentation principle, in which the eye is indented by exerting a force on it, while the size of the indented area is monitored. To measure the force we have used a commercial force sensor. The sensor to measure the indentation of the eye has been developed in our laboratories. We have performed measurements using an experimental set-up; these show that an accuracy of 90% will be possible if the sensor is designed in the proper way

    The role of DSM + C to facilitate the integration of renewable energy and low carbon energy technologies

    Recent legislation and building regulations have aiming to reduce the energy demands of buildings and include renewable based micro-generation technologies. Due to the variations in energy delivery from these technologies, optimised control over building plant and loads is essential if we are to achieve a good demand-supply match and achieve a reduction in energy demands. This paper reports on research being undertaken as part of the UK EPSRC SuperGen Future Networks programme, specifically relating to the development of algorithms for simulating dynamic demand side control strategies to identify demand-supply matching options when deploying building integrated renewable energy and low carbon technologies. The development of demand side management and control (DSM+c) is a means to improve the dynamic demand-supply match taking account of the available demand side management capacity and time of occurrence. The principle of the developed DSM+c algorithms is to maximise the available control capacity which will enable a better demand-supply match while minimising any impact on users. This paper will demonstrate the application of DSM+c to improve the energy efficiency of a building (e.g. reduced total capacity), restructure the demand pattern via load shifting and switching (e.g. on/off or proportional control) to one more favourable to building integrated renewables. The impact of different control strategies on demand profile restructuring will be demonstrated using simulation to alter the settings of the DSM+c parameters - such as priority, methods and periods - for a given demand profile. The paper will conclude by presenting the outcomes from a case study using the decision support/design tool, MERIT where the developed DSM+c algorithms have been implemented to better facilitate the match between demand and building integrated clean energy supply technologies at the individual multi-familiy building level

    On-line energy services for smart homes

    The EC funded 'Smart Homes' project commenced in 2001 as a 3 year programme. The primary objective is to establish Internet-based energy services and test these within field trials in Sweden, Greece, the Czech Republic and the UK. The tasks include the prototyping and testing of energy services for citizens and professionals, and the establishment of cable and wireless approaches to Internet connection. The implementations are based on residential gateway, or 'e-box', technology. Users, for example utilities, citizens, local authority energy managers and health care providers, can access the information through standard Web browsers and, depending on the particular energy service, may transmit information or control requests back to the originating homes. This paper sets out the overall structure of the SmartHomes system and reports on progress to date
