    The pure rotation spectrum of ammonia

    New experimental means for the study of absorption spectra in the extreme infra-red are described. These have been used in extending our knowledge of the pure rotation spectra to the case of a polyatomic molecule. The absorption spectrum of ammonia has been investigated in the region between 55μ and 130μ, and a very simple structure was found. Six lines were observed which belong to a pure rotation spectrum and are apparently due to changes in the energy of rotation of the ammonia molecule about an axis normal to the line of symmetry, that is, to transitions in which the quantum number j increases by unity. Other lines due to transitions with a change also of τ, the quantum number connected with rotations about the axis of symmetry, are absent. These facts are briefly discussed in connection with the predictions of the wave mechanics with which they are shown to be in accord. The moment of inertia of the ammonia molecule about an axis normal to the line of symmetry is estimated to be 2.77×10^(-40) gm cm^2

    Absorbing power of various materials of wave-lengths greater than 50μ—For blackening a receiver of a thermocouple for radiation for obtaining pure rotation band spectra, it is desirable to use a material that is an efficient absorber of the extreme infra-red but a poor absorber of radiation of shorter wave-lengths. The absorbing power of 25 materials were tested for radiation of wave-lengths near 4μ and greater than 50μ. Of all the materials tested, white lead, litharge, red phosphorus, powdered glass, copper sulphide, and celestite were found the best for covering a receiver to absorb the extreme infa-red radiation. The 25 materials were tested by painting them on a receiver of a thermocouple which was exposed to extreme infra-red radiation. The same receiver and thermocouple were used throughout the experiment. A D'Arsonval type galvanometer was improved by using a quartz suspension and replacing each conducting lead with silver leaf or gold plated silver ribbon 1μ thick wound in a spiral

    Home Telehealth Uptake and Continued Use Among Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: a Systematic Review

    Background Home telehealth has the potential to benefit heart failure (HF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, however large-scale deployment is yet to be achieved. Purpose The aim of this review was to assess levels of uptake of home telehealth by patients with HF and COPD and the factors that determine whether patients do or do not accept and continue to use telehealth. Methods This research performs a narrative synthesis of the results from included studies. Results Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies that reported rates of refusal and/or withdrawal found that almost one third of patients who were offered telehealth refused and one fifth of participants who did accept later abandoned telehealth. Seven barriers to, and nine facilitators of, home telehealth use were identified. Conclusions Research reports need to provide more details regarding telehealth refusal and abandonment, in order to understand the reasons why patients decide not to use telehealth
