Defining forgiveness: Christian clergy and general population perspectives.
The lack of any consensual definition of forgiveness is a serious weakness in the research literature (McCullough, Pargament & Thoresen, 2000). As forgiveness is at the core of Christianity, this study returns to the Christian source of the concept to explore the meaning of forgiveness for practicing Christian clergy. Comparisons are made with a general population sample and social science definitions of forgiveness to ensure that a shared meaning of forgiveness is articulated. Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy (N = 209) and a general population sample (N = 159) completed a postal questionnaire about forgiveness. There is agreement on the existence of individual differences in forgiveness. Clergy and the general population perceive reconciliation as necessary for forgiveness while there is no consensus within psychology. The clergy suggests that forgiveness is limitless and that repentance is unnecessary while the general population suggests that there are limits and that repentance is necessary. Psychological definitions do not conceptualize repentance as necessary for forgiveness and the question of limits has not been addressed although within therapy the implicit assumption is that forgiveness is limitless.</p
Developing autonomous learning in first year university students using perspectives from positive psychology
Autonomous learning is a commonly occurring learning outcome from university study, and it is argued that students require confidence in their own abilities to achieve this. Using approaches from positive psychology, this study aimed to develop confidence in first‐year university students to facilitate autonomous learning. Psychological character strengths were assessed in 214 students on day one at university. Two weeks later their top three strengths were given to them in study skills modules as part of a psycho‐educational intervention designed to increase their self‐efficacy and self‐esteem. The impact of the intervention was assessed against a control group of 40 students who had not received the intervention. The results suggested that students were more confident after the intervention, and that levels of autonomous learning increased significantly compared to the controls. Character strengths were found to be associated with self‐efficacy, self‐esteem and autonomous learning in ways that were theoretically meaningful
Properties of 3-manifolds for relativists
In canonical quantum gravity certain topological properties of 3-manifolds
are of interest. This article gives an account of those properties which have
so far received sufficient attention, especially those concerning the
diffeomorphism groups of 3-manifolds. We give a summary of these properties and
list some old and new results concerning them. The appendix contains a
discussion of the group of large diffeomorphisms of the -handle 3-manifold.Comment: 20 pages. Plain-TeX, no figures, 1 Table (A4 format
Cyclic Statistics In Three Dimensions
While 2-dimensional quantum systems are known to exhibit non-permutation,
braid group statistics, it is widely expected that quantum statistics in
3-dimensions is solely determined by representations of the permutation group.
This expectation is false for certain 3-dimensional systems, as was shown by
the authors of ref. [1,2,3]. In this work we demonstrate the existence of
``cyclic'', or , {\it non-permutation group} statistics for a system of n
> 2 identical, unknotted rings embedded in . We make crucial use of a
theorem due to Goldsmith in conjunction with the so called Fuchs-Rabinovitch
relations for the automorphisms of the free product group on n elements.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, LaTex, minor page reformattin
TuneTracker: Tensions in the Surveillance of Traditional Music
We describe the design and deployment of the first system ever to dynamically track and publish records of folk music playing. TuneTracker is a software system that has been, at time of writing, deployed at a pub in Dublin, Ireland for five months. It captures, stores, and posts the names of tunes played in Irish traditional music sessions on a public website. This paper makes two contributions: (1) drawing from a two year ethnographic study of trad musicians, it details the design and development of a system to track and publish traditional musicians’ practices while respecting the ethos of tradition, and (2) it presents a discussion of professional musicians’ reactions to having their music practices surveilled. This latter fieldwork revealed divergent viewpoints on the effect that TuneTracker would have on local sessions and the process of tradition
The Spectrum of Goldstini and Modulini
When supersymmetry is broken in multiple sectors via independent dynamics,
the theory furnishes a corresponding multiplicity of "goldstini" degrees of
freedom which may play a substantial role in collider phenomenology and
cosmology. In this paper, we explore the tree-level mass spectrum of goldstini
arising from a general admixture of F-term, D-term, and almost no-scale
supersymmetry breaking, employing non-linear superfields and a novel gauge
fixing for supergravity discussed in a companion paper. In theories of F-term
and D-term breaking, goldstini acquire a mass which is precisely twice the
gravitino mass, while the inclusion of no-scale breaking renders one of these
modes, the modulino, massless. We argue that the vanishing modulino mass can be
explained in terms of an accidental and spontaneously broken "global"
supersymmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; v2: typo corrected, references updated; v3:

A Transiting Planet of a Sun-like Star
A planet transits an 11th magnitude, G1V star in the constellation Corona
Borealis. We designate the planet XO-1b, and the star, XO-1, also known as GSC
02041-01657. XO-1 lacks a trigonometric distance; we estimate it to be 200+-20
pc. Of the ten stars currently known to host extrasolar transiting planets, the
star XO-1 is the most similar to the Sun in its physical characteristics: its
radius is 1.0+-0.08 R_Sun, its mass is 1.0+-0.03 M_Sun, V sini < 3 km/s, and
its metallicity [Fe/H] is 0.015+-0.04. The orbital period of the planet XO-1b
is 3.941534+-0.000027 days, one of the longer ones known. The planetary mass is
0.90+-0.07 M_Jupiter, which is marginally larger than that of other transiting
planets with periods between 3 and 4 days. Both the planetary radius and the
inclination are functions of the spectroscopically determined stellar radius.
If the stellar radius is 1.0+-0.08 R_Sun, then the planetary radius is
1.30+-0.11 R_Jupiter and the inclination of the orbit is 87.7+-1.2 degrees. We
have demonstrated a productive international collaboration between professional
and amateur astronomers that was important to distinguishing this planet from
many other similar candidates.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, accepted for part 1 of Ap
A Straight and Narrow Ionized Filament
We report the discovery of a extremely narrow, extremely linear, ionized
filament. The filament is 2.5 degrees long and has an H surface
brightness of 0.5 rayleighs. The filament is approximately ``Y'' shaped. The
widest separation of the two diagonal segments is 5 arcminutes. We discuss four
possible origins for this feature: (1) an extremely low density, nearby jet,
(2) an unusually linear filament associated with some large-scale nearby
nebula, perhaps even the Local Bubble, (3) an ionized trail left by mechanical
input from a star or compact object moving through the ISM, or (4) an ionized
trail left by photoionization (``Fossil \stromgren Trail'') from a star or
compact object. We favor this last hypothesis, and derive some of the basic
properties for an ionized trail. Regardless of whether this latter hypothesis
applies to this specific filament, the basic properties of such a trail, its
length, width, and brightness, are interesting, predictable, and should be
observable behind some white dwarfs. We suggest future tests for ascertaining
the origin of this filament, and discuss how this structure might be useful to
constrain the thermal and velocity structure of the nearby interstellar medium.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, to appear in AJ, 2001; astroph abstract is

Ezek a módszerek általában sikeresen növelik a megbocsátásra való hajlandóságot.</o:p
