    Beliefs about brain injury in Britain

    Primary objective: Surveys have revealed that a high proportion of the public in the US and Canada hold misconceptions pertaining to the sequelae of brain injury. This study examined whether similar misconceptions are endorsed by adults in Britain. Research design: Survey. Methods and procedures: Three hundred and twenty-two participants completed a 17-item questionnaire containing true or false statements about general knowledge of brain injury, coma and consciousness, memory impairments and recovery. Main outcomes and results: Regardless of age, sex, level of education and familiarity with brain injury, participants held mistaken beliefs about consciousness, were inclined to under-estimate the extent of memory deficits and were unaware that patients are more vulnerable and less resistant to further injury. A large proportion of respondents indicated that their knowledge of brain injury had been derived from the popular media. Conclusions: Similar misconceptions to those reported in previous studies exist in Britain. Notably in this study these misconceptions were endorsed by a greater percentage of respondents. Greater public awareness is needed for decisions concerning funding and patient care. It is therefore important for healthcare professionals and public health campaigns to dispel myths about brain injury

    Stratospheric CCN sampling program

    Two one liter grab samples of stratospheric aerosol were returned from each of six U-2 sampling missions. Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectra from each sample were obtained. Interest was centered on the effects of volcanic activity. Spurious particle generation was found to be a serious problem in container 9 LFT and a much smaller problem in container 9 RT. Initial studies of an option for improved sample containers and values were completed. A CCN spectrometer, able to operate at an internal pressure of 300 mb, was designed

    The correlation between soft and hard X-rays component in flares: from the Sun to the stars

    In this work we study the correlation between the soft (1.6--12.4 keV, mostly thermal) and the hard (20--40 and 60--80 keV, mostly non-thermal) X-ray emission in solar flares up to the most energetic events, spanning about 4 orders of magnitude in peak flux, establishing a general scaling law and extending it to the most intense stellar flaring events observed to date. We used the data from the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft, a NASA Small Explorer launched in February 2002. RHESSI has good spectral resolution (~1 keV in the X-ray range) and broad energy coverage (3 keV--20 MeV), which makes it well suited to distinguish the thermal from non-thermal emission in solar flares. Our study is based on the detailed analysis of 45 flares ranging from the GOES C-class, to the strongest X-class events, using the peak photon fluxes in the GOES 1.6--12.4 keV and in two bands selected from RHESSI data, i.e.20--40 keV and 60--80 keV. We find a significant correlation between the soft and hard peak X-ray fluxes spanning the complete sample studied. The resulting scaling law has been extrapolated to the case of the most intense stellar flares observed, comparing it with the stellar observations. Our results show that an extrapolation of the scaling law derived for solar flares to the most active stellar events is compatible with the available observations of intense stellar flares in hard X-rays.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures.     Gene-history correlation and population structure

    Correlation of gene histories in the human genome determines the patterns of genetic variation (haplotype structure) and is crucial to understanding genetic factors in common diseases. We derive closed analytical expressions for the correlation of gene histories in established demographic models for genetic evolution and show how to extend the analysis to more realistic (but more complicated) models of demographic structure. We identify two contributions to the correlation of gene histories in divergent populations: linkage disequilibrium, and differences in the demographic history of individuals in the sample. These two factors contribute to correlations at different length scales: the former at small, and the latter at large scales. We show that recent mixing events in divergent populations limit the range of correlations and compare our findings to empirical results on the correlation of gene histories in the human genome.Comment: Revised and extended version: 26 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    The Starburst in the Central Kiloparsec of Markarian 231

    We present VLBA observations at 0.33 and 0.61 GHz, and VLA observations between 5 and 22 GHz, of subkiloparsec scale radio emission from Mrk 231. In addition to jet components clearly associated with the AGN, we also find a smooth extended component of size 100 - 1000 pc most probably related to the purported massive star forming disk in Mrk 231. The diffuse radio emission from the disk is found to have a steep spectrum at high frequencies, characteristic of optically thin synchrotron emission. The required relativistic particle density in the disk can be produced by a star formation rate of 220 Msolar/yr in the central kiloparsec. At low frequencies the disk is absorbed, most likely by ionized gas with an emission measure of 8 x 10^5 pc cm-6. We have also identified 4 candidate radio supernovae that, if confirmed, represent direct evidence for ongoing star formation in the central kiloparsec.Comment: in press at ApJ for v. 519 July 1999, 14 page LaTeX document includes 6 postscript figure

    Modeling Solar Lyman Alpha Irradiance

    Solar Lyman alpha irradiance is estimated from various solar indices using linear regression analyses. Models developed with multiple linear regression analysis, including daily values and 81-day running means of solar indices, predict reasonably well both the short- and long-term variations observed in Lyman alpha. It is shown that the full disk equivalent width of the He line at 1083 nm offers the best proxy for Lyman alpha, and that the total irradiance corrected for sunspot effect also has a high correlation with Lyman alpha

    The boron crystals used in this study were prepared by reducing boron tribromide with hydrogen upon contact with a hot (1500°C) tantalum filament. The largest single crystals weighed less than ten micrograms and were a few hundred microns in length. The high purity of the specimens was verified spectrographically and their crystalline nature was verified by means of Laue photographs

    Initial estimate of NOAA-9 SBUV/2 total ozone drift: Based on comparison with re-calibrated TOMS measurements and pair justification of SBUV/2

    Newly recalibrated version 6 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data are used as a reference measurement in a comparison of monthly means of total ozone in 10 degree latitude zones from SBUV/2 and the nadir measurements from TOMS. These comparisons indicate a roughly linear long-term drift in SBUV/2 total ozone relative to TOMS of about 2.5 Dobson units per year at the equator over the first three years of SBUV/2. The pari justification technique is also applied to the SBUV/2 measurements in a manner similar to that used for SBUV and TOMS. The higher solar zenith angles associated with the afternoon orbit of NOAA-9 and the large changes in solar zenith angle associated with its changing equator crossing time degrade the accuracy of the pair justification method relative to its application to SBUV and TOMS, but the results are consistent with the SBUV/2-TOMS comparisons, and show a roughly linear drift in SBUV/2 of 2.5 to 4.5 Dobson units per year in equatorial ozone
