    Leibniz algebroid associated with a Nambu-Poisson structure

    The notion of Leibniz algebroid is introduced, and it is shown that each Nambu-Poisson manifold has associated a canonical Leibniz algebroid. This fact permits to define the modular class of a Nambu-Poisson manifold as an appropiate cohomology class, extending the well-known modular class of Poisson manifolds

    Toll-managed lane pioneers: Lessons from five US states

    Toll-managed lanes have become an increasingly popular technique among transportation policymakers for managing congestion on existing highways and, in some cases, financing the construction of new lanes in congested urban corridors. Although growing in popularity, the adoption of these facilities is concentrated in five states: Texas, California, Colorado, Minnesota, and Florida. This paper examines the adoption and utilization of toll-managed lanes in these pioneer states. Using archival, case-based research, our analysis suggests that the adoption of toll-managed lanes was driven by a combination of factors, including rapid population growth, near or above average growth in vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and insufficient gas tax funding for transportation investments. Implementation was also generally similar across states but some of the pioneers delegated the management of their toll-managed lane programs to special regional highway authorities while others used state highway agencies

    A preliminary determination of the Dirac phase in the PMNS matrix is \dell\approx -\frac{\pi}{2}. A rather accurately determined Jarlskog invariant JJ in the CKM matrix is close to the maximum. Since the phases in the CKM and PMNS matrices will be accurately determined in the future, it is an interesting problem to relate these two phases. This can be achieved in a families-unified grand unification if the weak CP violation is introduced spontaneously {\it \`a la} Froggatt and Nielsen at a high energy scale, where only one meaningful Dirac CP phase appears.Comment: 10 pages with 3 figure

    The F-Landscape: Dynamically Determining the Multiverse

    We evolve our Multiverse Blueprints to characterize our local neighborhood of the String Landscape and the Multiverse of plausible string, M- and F-theory vacua. Building upon the tripodal foundations of i) the Flipped SU(5) Grand Unified Theory (GUT), ii) extra TeV-Scale vector-like multiplets derived out of F-theory, and iii) the dynamics of No-Scale Supergravity, together dubbed No-Scale F-SU(5), we demonstrate the existence of a continuous family of solutions which might adeptly describe the dynamics of distinctive universes. This Multiverse landscape of F-SU(5) solutions, which we shall refer to as the F-Landscape, accommodates a subset of universes compatible with the presently known experimental uncertainties of our own universe. We show that by secondarily minimizing the minimum of the scalar Higgs potential of each solution within the F-Landscape, a continuous hypervolume of distinct minimum minimorum can be engineered which comprise a regional dominion of universes, with our own universe cast as the bellwether. We conjecture that an experimental signal at the LHC of the No-Scale F-SU(5) framework's applicability to our own universe might sensibly be extrapolated as corroborating evidence for the role of string, M- and F-theory as a master theory of the Multiverse, with No-Scale supergravity as a crucial and pervasive reinforcing structure.Comment: 15 Pages, 7 Figures, 1 Tabl

    Unification and fermion mass relations in low string scale D-brane models

    In this talk, gauge coupling evolution is analyzed in D-brane inspired models with two Higgs doublets and a U(3)xU(2)xU(1)^N gauge symmetry. In particular, we focus on D-brane configurations with two or three abelian factors. We find that the correct hypercharge assignment of the Standard Model particles is reproduced for six viable models distinguished by different brane configurations. We also investigate the bottom tau quark mass relation and find that the correct low energy m_b / m_\tau ratio is obtained for equal b-\tau Yukawa couplings at a string scale around 10^3 TeV.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.     `Little Higgs' models, in which the Higgs particle arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, have a natural mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking associated with the large value of the top quark Yukawa coupling. The mechanism typically involves a new heavy SU(2)_{L} singlet top quark, T. We discuss the relationship of the Higgs boson and the two top quarks. We suggest experimental tests of the Little Higgs mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking using the production and decay of the T at the Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures; new ST fits (Fig. 3,4

    Minimal Anomalous U(1)' Extension of the MSSM

    We study an extension of the MSSM by an anomalous abelian vector multiplet and a St\"uckelberg multiplet. The anomalies are cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism and the addition of Chern-Simons terms. The advantage of this choice over the standard one is that it allows for arbitrary values of the quantum numbers of the extra U(1). As a first step towards the study of hadron annihilations producing four leptons in the final state (a clean signal which might be studied at LHC) we then compute the decays Z'\to Z_0 \g and ZZ0Z0Z'\to Z_0 Z_0. We find that the largest values of the decay rate is 104\sim 10^{-4} GeV, while the expected number of events per year at LHC is at most of the order of 10.Comment: 45 pages, 8 eps figures, feynmf.     We examine in a generic context how the μ\mu problem can be resolved by means of a spontaneously broken gauge symmetry. We then focus on the new scheme based on a discrete gauge R symmetry which is spontaneously broken by nonperturbative hidden sector dynamics triggering supersymmetry breaking also. The possibility to suppress the dangerous baryon and/or lepton number violating interactions by means of this discrete R symmetry is examined also together with some phenomenological consequences.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, no figure

    Bianchi Type I Cosmologies in Arbitrary Dimensional Dilaton Gravities

    We study the low energy string effective action with an exponential type dilaton potential and vanishing torsion in a Bianchi type I space-time geometry. In the Einstein and string frames the general solution of the gravitational field equations can be expressed in an exact parametric form. Depending on the values of some parameters the obtained cosmological models can be generically divided into three classes, leading to both singular and nonsingular behaviors. The effect of the potential on the time evolution of the mean anisotropy parameter is also considered in detail, and it is shown that a Bianchi type I Universe isotropizes only in the presence of a dilaton field potential or a central deficit charge.Comment: REVTEX, 10 pages, 8 figure
