Theorizing the Law/Politics Distinction: Neutral Principles, Affirmative Action, and the Enduring Insight of Paul Mishkin
Early in his career Mishkin saw that the law could be apprehended from two distinct and in part incompatible perspectives: from the internal perspective of a faithful practitioner and from the external perspective of the general public. If the social legitimacy of the law as a public institution resides in the latter, the legal legitimacy of the law as a principled unfolding of professional reason inheres in the former. Mishkin came to believe that although the law required both forms of legitimacy, there was nevertheless serious tension between them, and he dedicated his scholarly career to attempting to theorize this persistent but necessary tension, which he conceived almost as a form of antinomy. In this article we pay tribute to Mishkin\u27s quest for understanding. We argue that the tension identified by Mishkin is significant and unavoidable, but that it is also exaggerated because it presupposes an unduly stringent separation between professional reason and popular values. In our view the law/politics distinction is both real and suffused throughout with ambiguity and uncertainty. The existence of the law/politics distinction creates the possibility of the rule of law, but the ragged and blurred boundaries of that distinction vivify the law by infusing it with the commitments and ideals of those whom the law purports to govern

Thermalization via Heat Radiation of an Individual Object Thinner than the Thermal Wavelength
Modeling and investigating the thermalization of microscopic objects with
arbitrary shape from first principles is of fundamental interest and may lead
to technical applications. Here, we study, over a large temperature range, the
thermalization dynamics due to far-field heat radiation of an individual,
deterministically produced silica fiber with a predetermined shape and a
diameter smaller than the thermal wavelength. The temperature change of the
subwavelength-diameter fiber is determined through a measurement of its optical
path length in conjunction with an ab initio thermodynamic model of the fiber
structure. Our results show excellent agreement with a theoretical model that
considers heat radiation as a volumetric effect and takes the emitter shape and
size relative to the emission wavelength into account
A Computational Procedure to Detect a New Type of High Dimensional Chaotic Saddle and its Application to the 3-D Hill's Problem
A computational procedure that allows the detection of a new type of
high-dimensional chaotic saddle in Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of
freedom is presented. The chaotic saddle is associated with a so-called
normally hyperbolic invariant manifold (NHIM). The procedure allows to compute
appropriate homoclinic orbits to the NHIM from which we can infer the existence
a chaotic saddle. NHIMs control the phase space transport across an equilibrium
point of saddle-centre-...-centre stability type, which is a fundamental
mechanism for chemical reactions, capture and escape, scattering, and, more
generally, ``transformation'' in many different areas of physics. Consequently,
the presented methods and results are of broad interest. The procedure is
illustrated for the spatial Hill's problem which is a well known model in
celestial mechanics and which gained much interest e.g. in the study of the

Configurations of Handles and the Classification of Divergences in the String Partition Function
The divergences that arise in the regularized partition function for closed
bosonic string theory in flat space lead to three types of perturbation series
expansions, distinguished by their genus dependence. This classification of
infinities can be traced to geometrical characteristics of the string
worldsheet. Some categories of divergences may be eliminated in string theories

Behavioural clusters and predictors of performance during recovery from stroke
We examined the patterns and variability of recovery post-stroke in multiple behavioral domains. A large cohort of first time stroke patients with heterogeneous lesions was studied prospectively and longitudinally at 1-2 weeks, 3 months and one year post-injury with structural MRI to measure lesion anatomy and in-depth neuropsychological assessment. Impairment was described at all timepoints by a few clusters of correlated deficits. The time course and magnitude of recovery was similar across domains, with change scores largely proportional to the initial deficit and most recovery occurring within the first three months. Damage to specific white matter tracts produced poorer recovery over several domains: attention and superior longitudinal fasciculus II/III, language and posterior arcuate fasciculus, motor and corticospinal tract. Finally, after accounting for the severity of the initial deficit, language and visual memory recovery/outcome was worse with lower education, while the occurrence of multiple deficits negatively impacted attention recovery
Self-Dual N=8 Supergravity as Closed N=2(4) Strings
As open N=2 or 4 strings describe self-dual N=4 super Yang-Mills in 2+2
dimensions, the corresponding closed (heterotic) strings describe self-dual
ungauged (gauged) N=8 supergravity. These theories are conveniently formulated
in a chiral superspace with general supercoordinate and local OSp(8|2) gauge
invariances. The super-light-cone and covariant-component actions are analyzed.
Because only half the Lorentz group is gauged, the gravity field equation is
