    Purification through Zeno-like Measurements

    A series of frequent measurements on a quantum system (Zeno-like measurements) is shown to result in the ``purification'' of another quantum system in interaction with the former.     Structural Phase Transition Accompanied by Metal - Insulator Transition in PrRu4P12

    A structural phase transition has been found using electron diffraction technique in PrRu4P12 accompanied by a metal - insulator (M - I) transition (TMI = 60K). Weak superlattice spots appeared at (H, K, L) (H + K + L = 2n + 1; n is an integer) position at a temperature of T = 12 K and 40 K. Above T = 70 K, the spots completely vanished. The space group of the low temperature phase is probably Pm3. This is the first observation of a symmetry other than Im3 in skutterudite compounds.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; J. Phys.: Condens.     Scientific Drilling and Related Research in the Samail Ophiolite, Sultanate of Oman

    This workshop report describes plans for scientific drilling in the Samail ophiolite in Oman in the context of past, current, and future research. Long-standing plans to study formation and evolution of the Samail crust and upper mantle, involving igneous and metamorphic processes at an oceanic spreading center, have been augmented by recent interest in ongoing, low temperature processes. These include alteration and weathering, and the associated sub-surface biosphere supported by chemical potential energy due to disequilibrium between mantle peridotite and water near the surface. This interest is motivated in part by the possibility of geological carbon capture and storage via engineered, accelerated mineral carbonation in Oman

    Spin-Polarized Transprot through Double Quantum Dots

    We investigate spin-polarized transport phenomena through double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic leads in series. By means of the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we calculate the conductance in the Kondo regime for two different configurations of the leads: spin-polarization of two ferromagnetic leads is parallel or anti-parallel. It is found that transport shows some remarkable properties depending on the tunneling strength between two dots. These properties are explained in terms of the Kondo resonances in the local density of states.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure

    Long-range transfer of electron-phonon coupling in oxide superlattices

    The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7 and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound La2/3Ca1/3MnO3\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3} that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO6_6 octahedra in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3} experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the YBa2Cu3O7\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7 layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures.     Augmentation index assessed by applanation tonometry is elevated in Marfan Syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To examine whether augmentation index (AIx) is increased in Marfan syndrome (MFS) and associated with increased aortic root size, and whether a peripheral-to-central generalised transfer function (GTF) can be applied usefully in MFS.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>10 MFS patients and 10 healthy controls (matched for sex, age and height) were studied before and after 400 μg sub-lingual GTN. Arterial waveforms were recorded using applanation tonometry. AIx and pulse pressure (PP) were determined for the radial and carotid arteries. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured between carotid and femoral arteries. GTFs were generated to examine the relationship between radial and carotid waveforms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>AIx was greater in MFS compared to controls at radial (mean -31.4 (SD 14.3)% v -50.2(15.6)%, p = 0.003) and carotid (-7.6(11.2)% v -23.7(12.7)%, p = 0.004) sites. Baseline PP at all measurement sites, and PWV, did not differ between subject groups. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that PWV and carotid AIx were positively correlated with aortic root size (p < 0.001 and p = 0.012 respectively), independent of the presence of MFS. PP was not associated with aortic root size. GTN caused similar decreases in AIx in both controls and patients. Significant differences were found in GTFs between MFS and control subjects, which changed following GTN administration. However, when an independent GTF was used to derive carotid waves from radial waves, no differences were found in the degree of error between MFS and controls.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>AIx is sensitive to the vascular abnormalities present in MFS, and may have a role as an adjunct to measurement of central PP and PWV. Differences between MFS and controls in the nature of the peripheral-to-central GTF are present, although have little effect on the pulse contour.</p

    Identifying Isolated Systolic Hypertension From Upper-Arm Cuff Blood Pressure Compared With Invasive Measurements

    Isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) is the most common form of hypertension and is highly prevalent in older people. We recently showed differences between upper-arm cuff and invasive blood pressure (BP) become greater with increasing age, which could influence correct identification of ISH. This study sought to determine the difference between identification of ISH by cuff BP compared with invasive BP. Cuff BP and invasive aortic BP were measured in 1695 subjects (median 64 years, interquartile range [55-72], 68% male) from the INSPECT (Invasive Blood Pressure Consortium) database. Data were recorded during coronary angiography among 29 studies, using 21 different cuff BP devices. ISH was defined as ≥130/<80 mm Hg using cuff BP compared with invasive aortic BP as the reference. The prevalence of ISH was 24% (n=407) according to cuff BP but 38% (n=642) according to invasive aortic BP. There was fair agreement (Cohen κ, 0.36) and 72% concordance between cuff and invasive aortic BP for identifying ISH. Among the 28% of subjects (n=471) with misclassification of ISH status by cuff BP, 20% (n=96) of the difference was due to lower cuff systolic BP compared with invasive aortic systolic BP (mean, -16.4 mm Hg [95% CI, -18.7 to -14.1]), whereas 49% (n=231) was from higher cuff diastolic BP compared with invasive aortic diastolic BP (+14.2 mm Hg [95% CI, 11.5-16.9]). In conclusion, compared with invasive BP, cuff BP fails to identify ISH in a sizeable portion of older people and demonstrates the need to improve cuff BP measurements
