    Frank Haes' thylacine

    No full text
Until recently, the earliest surviving photograph of a thylacine (albeit that of a dead trophy specimen) was from 1869. An earlier photograph, taken in 1864 by Frank Haes of a living thylacine at London Zoo, was known to have existed, but was feared lost or destroyed. This paper describes its recent rediscovery, and the identity of the thylacine it portrays. The Haes photograph is the only known image of a living thylacine from the 19th century and comprises a stereo view and lantern slide, both of which are presented together here for the first time

A Mg/O2 battery based on the MACC Electrolyte

    No full text
Mg/O2 cells employing a MgCl2/AlCl3/DME (MACC/DME) electrolyte are cycled and compared to cells with modified Grignard electrolytes, showing that performance of magnesium/oxygen batteries depends strongly on electrolyte com-position. Discharge capacity is far greater for MACC/DME-based cells, while rechargeability in these systems is severe-ly limited. The Mg/O2-MACC/DME discharge product comprises a mixture of Mg(ClO4)2 and MgCl2, with the latter likely formed from slow decomposition of the former. The presence of Cl in these compounds suggests that the electro-lyte participates in the cell reaction, or reacts readily with the initial electrochemical products. A rate study suggests that O2 diffusion in the electrolyte limits discharge capacities at higher currents. Formation of an insulating product film on the positive electrodes of Mg/O2-MACC/DME cells following deep discharge increases cell impedance substan-tially, and likely explains the poor rechargeability. An additional impedance rise consistent with film formation on the Mg negative electrode suggests the presence of detrimental O2 crossover. Minimizing O2 crossover and bypassing charge transfer through the discharge product would improve battery performanc

    Oxygen reduction on Pt/[TaOPO 4 /VC], Pt/[NbOPO 4 /VC], Pt/[Ta 2 O 5 /VC], and Pt/[Nb 2 O 5 /VC] electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolyte

New opportunities exist for the electrocatalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) in terms of electrocatalytic activity and material stability. In alkaline electrolyte, the electrocatalytic process is more facile than in acidic electrolyte due to the weakening of the competitive adsorption by the unreactive anion (1, 2). Compared to acid electrolytes, a much wider range of electrode materials are stable in alkaline electrolyte, including a number of less expensive materials; therefore, less platinum or even some non-noble metals (3-7) can be considered.. Recent studies have shown that platinum supported on metal oxide MO x (M=Ce, Ti, Mo, W, Nb, Ta) gave enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ORR ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We are grateful to the Office of Naval Research for continued support of our research

Communicating Health as an Impossibility: Sex Work, HIV/AIDS, and the Dance of Hope and Hopelessness

    No full text
Sex workers are stigmatized, denied access to civil society platforms and health resources, and considered at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS. Most top-down health campaigns that attempt to persuade them to use condoms on their jobs do not consider the significant contextual factors that shape their lives. This study is based on the premise that health campaigns in subaltern sex worker spaces need to accommodate participants\u27 voices. Set in a sex worker community in Kalighat, Kolkata, India, this ethnographic project documents how sex workers within a dialectic of hope and hopelessness contextualize health as an impossibility in the present

HIV/AIDS and Subaltern Autonomous Rationality: A Call to Re-Center Health Communication in Marginalized Sex Worker Spaces

    No full text
Sex workers in India constitute a marginalized population. They are considered at high risk of HIV/AIDS and are stigmatized for “selling sex” in a culture that generally censures sex outside marriage. HIV/AIDS initiatives targeted at this population have mostly adhered to promoting condom use, increasing awareness, and encouraging blood tests to screen for HIV/AIDS. Missing from this discourse are voices of sex workers and their autonomous consciousness. Based on an analysis of interview data from an eight-week field project, this paper seeks to centralize sex worker subaltern rationality in a call to reframe expert-led HIV/AIDS communication efforts that cater to sex worker communities
