    Preservice Secondary Science Teachers\u27 Reflections in Using Modeling & Simulation Applications as Instructional Tools for Learning

    Preparing preservice teachers to construct learning environments integrating technological tools is a challenge that higher education continues to tackle. One way to address this challenge is to have preservice teachers integrate modeling & simulation (M&S) tools while teaching, reflect on the experience, and attempt to identify ways to make improvements in instructional practices. This case study of five preservice secondary science teachers, enrolled in a course along with student teaching, was designed to study M&S tools integrated into instruction and how preservice teachers thought about the experience. Participants taught at least one lesson integrating M&S tools where they were to respond to reflective questions on the application as well as ways to improve the lesson. Findings indicated that preservice teachers fell into a strong or ineffective category in reflecting, which also impacted observations about the tool selected for instruction. This study also identified science teacher preparation programs need greater emphasis in use of M&S tool

    What do haematological cancer survivors want help with? A cross-sectional investigation of unmet supportive care needs

    BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the most prevalent unmet needs of haematological cancer survivors. METHODS: Haematological cancer survivors aged 18–80 years at time of recruitment were selected from four Australian state cancer registries. Survivors completed the Survivor Unmet Needs Survey. The most frequently reported “high/very high” unmet needs items were identified, as well as characteristics associated with the three most prevalent “high/very high” unmet needs reported by haematological cancer survivors. RESULTS: A total of 715 eligible survivors returned a completed survey. “Dealing with feeling tired” (17%), was the most frequently endorsed “high/very high” unmet need. Seven out of the ten most frequently endorsed unmet needs related to emotional health. Higher levels of psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression and stress) and indicators of financial burden as a result of cancer (e.g., having used up savings and trouble meeting day-to-day expenses due to cancer) were consistently identified as characteristics associated with the three most prevalent “high/very high” unmet needs. CONCLUSIONS: A minority of haematological cancer survivors endorsed a “high/very high” unmet need on individual items. Additional emotional support may be needed by a minority of survivors. Survivors reporting high levels of psychological distress or those who experience increased financial burden as a result of their cancer diagnosis may be at risk of experiencing the most prevalent “high/very high” unmet needs identified by this study.This project was co-funded by beyondblue and Cancer Australia (Grant ID: 569290)

    Modelling the structural disorder in trigonal-prismatic coordinated transition metal dichalcogenides

    Trigonal-prismatic coordinated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are formed from stacked (chalcogen)-(transition metal)-(chalcogen) triple layers, where the chemical bond is covalent within the triple layers and van der Waals (vdW) forces are effective between the layers. Bonding is at the origin of the great interest in these compounds, which are used as 2D materials in applications such as catalysis, electronics, photoelectronics, sensors, batteries and thermoelectricity. This paper addresses the issue of modelling the structural disorder in multilayer TMDCs. The structural model takes into account stacking faults, correlated displacement of atoms and average crystallite size/shape, and is assessed by simulation of the X-ray diffraction pattern and fitting to the experimental data relative to a powdered sample of MoS2 exfoliated and restacked via lithiation. From fitting, an average crystallite size of about 50 angstrom, nearly spherical crystallites and a definite probability of deviation from the fully eclipsed atomic arrangement present in the ordered structure are determined. The increased interlayer distance and correlated intralayer and interlayer atomic displacement are attributed to the presence of lithium intercalated in the vdW gap between triple layers (Li/Mo molar ratio of about 0.06). The model holds for the whole class of trigonal-prismatic coordinated TMDCs, and is suitably flexible to take into account different preparation routes

    Responsive Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Frozen Complex Coacervate Core Micelles

    [Image: see text] Frozen complex coacervate core micelles (C3Ms) were developed as a class of particle stabilizers for Pickering emulsions. The C3Ms are composed of a core of electrostatically interacting weak polyelectrolytes, poly(acrylic acid) (pAA) and poly(dimethylaminopropylacrylamide) (pDMAPAA), surrounded by a corona of water-soluble and surface active poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNiPAM). Mixing parameters of the two polymer solutions, including pH, mixing method, charge ratio, and salinity of the medium, were carefully controlled, leading to monodisperse, colloidally stable C3Ms. A combination of dynamic light scattering and proton nuclear magnetic resonance experiments showed that the C3Ms gradually disassembled from a dynamically frozen core state in pure water into free polyelectrolyte chains above 0.8 M NaCl. Upon formulation of dodecane-in-water emulsions, the frozen C3Ms adsorb as particles at the droplet interfaces in striking contrast with most of the conventional micelles made of amphiphilic block copolymers which fall apart at the interface. Eventually, increasing the salt concentration of the system triggered disassembly of the C3Ms, which led to emulsion destabilization

    Background and aims. Engaging children in research about their lives is an essential component of providing excellent health care services. Utilising participatory, visual/arts-based approaches such as photo-elicitation (PE) can extend opportunities for children to reflect on and talk about their lives. This paper aims to explore the use of, benefits and issues associated with using PE with children. Methods. PE is a participatory, qualitative method that does not rely on high levels of verbal or written literacy and which creates equitable conditions for children’s engagement in research. Within a broad brief, children are asked to take topic-related photos. Apart from safety/privacy related guidance about where it might not be appropriate to take photographs, the children are free to take any image that has meaning to them. The children then select the images they wish to discuss and the researcher literally has to ‘follow’ the children’s data and adopt a flexible approach to the conversational interview. Results. Reflecting on our experience with PE we note how the quality of discussion is enhanced and intriguing and unexpected insights into children’s lives are revealed. What children choose to photograph or omit can create interesting tensions; these and other lessons will be shared along with exemplar photographs and stories. Conclusions. Although PE provides considerable opportunities and benefits, it is challenging research to be part of and requires skilled researchers to ensure children are safe during research engagement and that the data provides a robust depth of insight into their lives

    Adjuvant and concurrent temozolomide for 1p/19q non-co-deleted anaplastic glioma (CATNON; EORTC study 26053-22054): second interim analysis of a randomised, open-label, phase 3 study

    BACKGROUND The CATNON trial investigated the addition of concurrent, adjuvant, and both current and adjuvant temozolomide to radiotherapy in adults with newly diagnosed 1p/19q non-co-deleted anaplastic gliomas. The benefit of concurrent temozolomide chemotherapy and relevance of mutations in the IDH1 and IDH2 genes remain unclear. METHODS This randomised, open-label, phase 3 study done in 137 institutions across Australia, Europe, and North America included patients aged 18 years or older with newly diagnosed 1p/19q non-co-deleted anaplastic gliomas and a WHO performance status of 0-2. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) centrally using a minimisation technique to radiotherapy alone (59·4 Gy in 33 fractions; three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy or intensity-modulated radiotherapy), radiotherapy with concurrent oral temozolomide (75 mg/m2^{2} per day), radiotherapy with adjuvant oral temozolomide (12 4-week cycles of 150-200 mg/m2^{2} temozolomide given on days 1-5), or radiotherapy with both concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide. Patients were stratified by institution, WHO performance status score, age, 1p loss of heterozygosity, the presence of oligodendroglial elements on microscopy, and MGMT promoter methylation status. The primary endpoint was overall survival adjusted by stratification factors at randomisation in the intention-to-treat population. A second interim analysis requested by the independent data monitoring committee was planned when two-thirds of total required events were observed to test superiority or futility of concurrent temozolomide. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00626990. FINDINGS Between Dec 4, 2007, and Sept 11, 2015, 751 patients were randomly assigned (189 to radiotherapy alone, 188 to radiotherapy with concurrent temozolomide, 186 to radiotherapy and adjuvant temozolomide, and 188 to radiotherapy with concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide). Median follow-up was 55·7 months (IQR 41·0-77·3). The second interim analysis declared futility of concurrent temozolomide (median overall survival was 66·9 months [95% CI 45·7-82·3] with concurrent temozolomide vs 60·4 months [45·7-71·5] without concurrent temozolomide; hazard ratio [HR] 0·97 [99·1% CI 0·73-1·28], p=0·76). By contrast, adjuvant temozolomide improved overall survival compared with no adjuvant temozolomide (median overall survival 82·3 months [95% CI 67·2-116·6] vs 46·9 months [37·9-56·9]; HR 0·64 [95% CI 0·52-0·79], p<0·0001). The most frequent grade 3 and 4 toxicities were haematological, occurring in no patients in the radiotherapy only group, 16 (9%) of 185 patients in the concurrent temozolomide group, and 55 (15%) of 368 patients in both groups with adjuvant temozolomide. No treatment-related deaths were reported. INTERPRETATION Adjuvant temozolomide chemotherapy, but not concurrent temozolomide chemotherapy, was associated with a survival benefit in patients with 1p/19q non-co-deleted anaplastic glioma. Clinical benefit was dependent on IDH1 and IDH2 mutational status. FUNDING Merck Sharpe & Dohme
