    Prym varieties and the canonical map of surfaces of general type

    Let X be a smooth complex surface of general type such that the image of the canonical map ϕ\phi of X is a surface Σ\Sigma and that ϕ\phi has degree δ2\delta\geq 2. Let ϵ ⁣:SΣ\epsilon\colon S\to \Sigma be a desingularization of Σ\Sigma and assume that the geometric genus of S is not zero. Beauville has proved that in this case S is of general type and ϵ\epsilon is the canonical map of S. Beauville has also constructed the only infinite series of examples ϕ:XΣ\phi:X\to \Sigma with the above properties that was known up to now. Starting from his construction, we define a {\em good generating pair}, namely a pair (h:VW,L)(h:V\to W, L) where h is a finite morphism of surfaces and L is a nef and big line bundle of W satisfying certain assumptions. We show that by applying a construction analogous to Beauville's to a good generating pair one obtains an infinite series of surfaces of general type whose canonical map is 2-to-1 onto a canonically embedded surface. In this way we are able to construct more infinite series of such surfaces. In addition, we show that good generating pairs have bounded invariants and that there exist essentially only 2 examples with dimL>1\dim |L|>1. The key fact that we exploit for obtaining these results is that the Albanese variety P of V is a Prym variety and that the fibre of the Prym map over P has positive dimension.Comment: 40 pages, LaTeX 2.0

    Perfectionism or Perfectionisms in Orthorexia Nervosa

    Purpose: Perfectionism is considered a transdiagnostic construct that characterises eating disorders (EDs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and that could also depict orthorexia nervosa (ON). The principal aim of this study was to investigate what dimensions of perfectionism mostly represent ON. Moreover, it was evaluated if dieting impacted the presence of orthorexic features and perfectionistic behaviour. Methods: The sample consisted of two groups-the "Diet" (n = 93), and the "No Diet" (n = 94) groups-composed of people with high and low orthorexic tendencies, respectively. Participants filled out self-report questionnaires to investigate orthorexic tendencies and different facets of perfectionism. Results: Analyses highlighted that people with high orthorexic tendencies showed higher perfectionistic features and that ON had a significant relationship with different facets of perfectionism. No interactions with diet were found. Therefore, no other differences were highlighted when the group type (Diet/No Diet) was considered. Conclusions: Regardless of diet, different facets of perfectionism characterise ON: perfectionism as a personality trait and perfectionism related to EDs and to obsessive-compulsive features. Our results evidenced that perfectionism could also be considered a useful construct in the conceptualization of orthorexia nervosa

    Variation of Area-to-Mass-Ratio of HAMR Space Debris Objects

    An unexpected space debris population has been detected in 2004 Schildknecht et al. (2003, 2004) with the unique properties of a very high area-to-mass ratio (HAMR) Schildknecht et al. (2005a). Ever since it has been tried to investigate the dynamical properties of those objects further. The orbits of those objects are heavily perturbed by the effect of direct radiation pressure. Unknown attitude motion complicates orbit prediction. The area-to-mass ratio of the objects seems to be not stable over time. Only sparse optical data is available for those objects in drift orbits. The current work uses optical observations of five HAMR objects, observed over several years and investigates the variation of their area-to-mass ratio and orbital parameters. A normalized orbit determination setup has been established and validated with two low and two of the high ratio objects, to ensure, that comparable orbits over longer time spans are determined even with sparse optical data.Comment: 10 pages, accepted Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society, MN-11-1785-MJ.R1, The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.co
