    Eta-Mesic Nucleus and COSY-GEM Data

    The experimental data of the COSY-GEM Collaboration for the recoil-free transfer reaction p (27Al, 3He) \pi - p' X, leading to the formation of bound state of eta (\eta) meson in 25Mg nucleus, is reanalyzed in this paper. In particular, predicted values of binding energy and half-width of the \eta -mesic nucleus 25Mg\eta, given by different theoretical approaches, are compared with the ones obtained from the experimental missing mass spectrum. It is found that the spectrum can be explained reasonably well if interference effect of another process, where \eta is not bound in 25Mg but is scattered by the nucleus and emerge as a pion, is taken into account. The data also indicate that the interaction between N*(1535) and a nucleus is attractive in nature.Comment: Invited talk at the International Symposium on Mesic Nuclei, Krakow, 16 June 201

    Optical properties of MgCNi3MgCNi_3 in the normal state

    We present the optical reflectance and conductivity spectra for non-oxide antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi3MgCNi_{3} at different temperatures. The reflectance drops gradually over a large energy scale up to 33,000 cm−1^{-1}, with the presence of several wiggles. The reflectance has slight temperature dependence at low frequency but becomes temperature independent at high frequency. The optical conductivity shows a Drude response at low frequencies and four broad absorption features in the frequency range from 600 cm−1cm^{-1} to 33,000 cm−1cm^{-1}. We illustrate that those features can be well understood from the intra- and interband transitions between different components of Ni 3d bands which are hybridized with C 2p bands. There is a good agreement between our experimental data and the first-principle band structure calculations.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.

    Land use/land cover mapping (1:25000) of Taiwan, Republic of China by automated multispectral interpretation of LANDSAT imagery

    Three methods were tested for collection of the training sets needed to establish the spectral signatures of the land uses/land covers sought due to the difficulties of retrospective collection of representative ground control data. Computer preprocessing techniques applied to the digital images to improve the final classification results were geometric corrections, spectral band or image ratioing and statistical cleaning of the representative training sets. A minimal level of statistical verification was made based upon the comparisons between the airphoto estimates and the classification results. The verifications provided a further support to the selection of MSS band 5 and 7. It also indicated that the maximum likelihood ratioing technique can achieve more agreeable classification results with the airphoto estimates than the stepwise discriminant analysis

    Study of air pollutant detectors

    The application of field ionization mass spectrometry (FIMS) to the detection of air pollutants was investigated. Current methods are reviewed for measuring contaminants of fixed gases, sulfur compounds, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and particulates. Two enriching devices: the dimethyl silicone rubber membrane separator, and the selective adsorber of polyethylene foam were studied along with FIMS. It is concluded that the membrane enricher system is not a suitable method for removing air pollutants. However, the FIMS shows promise as a useable system for air pollution detection

    Chain: A Dynamic Double Auction Framework for Matching Patient Agents

    In this paper we present and evaluate a general framework for the design of truthful auctions for matching agents in a dynamic, two-sided market. A single commodity, such as a resource or a task, is bought and sold by multiple buyers and sellers that arrive and depart over time. Our algorithm, Chain, provides the first framework that allows a truthful dynamic double auction (DA) to be constructed from a truthful, single-period (i.e. static) double-auction rule. The pricing and matching method of the Chain construction is unique amongst dynamic-auction rules that adopt the same building block. We examine experimentally the allocative efficiency of Chain when instantiated on various single-period rules, including the canonical McAfee double-auction rule. For a baseline we also consider non-truthful double auctions populated with zero-intelligence plus"-style learning agents. Chain-based auctions perform well in comparison with other schemes, especially as arrival intensity falls and agent valuations become more volatile

    The upper critical field and its anisotropy in LiFeAs

    The upper critical field μ0Hc2(Tc)\mu_0H_{c2}(T_c) of LiFeAs single crystals has been determined by measuring the electrical resistivity using the facilities of pulsed magnetic field at Los Alamos. We found that μ0Hc2(Tc)\mu_0H_{c2}(T_c) of LiFeAs shows a moderate anisotropy among the layered iron-based superconductors; its anisotropic parameter γ\gamma monotonically decreases with decreasing temperature and approaches γ≃1.5\gamma\simeq 1.5 as T→0T\rightarrow 0. The upper critical field reaches 15T (H∥cH\parallel c) and 24.2T (H∥abH\parallel ab) at T=T=1.4K, which value is much smaller than other iron-based high TcT_c superconductors. The temperature dependence of μ0Hc2(Tc)\mu_0H_{c2}(T_c) can be described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) method, showing orbitally and (likely) spin-paramagnetically limited upper critical field for H∥cH\parallel c and H∥abH\parallel ab, respectively.Comment: 5 pages,5 figure
