    Improving Reinforcement Learning Efficiency with Auxiliary Tasks in Non-Visual Environments: A Comparison

    Real-world reinforcement learning (RL) environments, whether in robotics or industrial settings, often involve non-visual observations and require not only efficient but also reliable and thus interpretable and flexible RL approaches. To improve efficiency, agents that perform state representation learning with auxiliary tasks have been widely studied in visual observation contexts. However, for real-world problems, dedicated representation learning modules that are decoupled from RL agents are more suited to meet requirements. This study compares common auxiliary tasks based on, to the best of our knowledge, the only decoupled representation learning method for low-dimensional non-visual observations. We evaluate potential improvements in sample efficiency and returns for environments ranging from a simple pendulum to a complex simulated robotics task. Our findings show that representation learning with auxiliary tasks only provides performance gains in sufficiently complex environments and that learning environment dynamics is preferable to predicting rewards. These insights can inform future development of interpretable representation learning approaches for non-visual observations and advance the use of RL solutions in real-world scenarios.Comment: Accepted at LOD 202

    Orthonormal spin-flavor wave functions of Lorentz covariant quark models of the Bakamjian-Thomas type are constructed for nucleon resonances. Three different bases are presented.     Relativistic Quark Spin Coupling Effects in the Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors

    We investigate the effect of different forms of relativistic spin coupling of constituent quarks in the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. The four-dimensional integrations in the two-loop Feynman diagram are reduced to the null-plane, such that the light-front wave function is introduced in the computation of the form factors. The neutron charge form factor is very sensitive to different choices of spin coupling schemes, once its magnetic moment is fitted to the experimental value. The scalar coupling between two quarks is preferred by the neutron data, when a reasonable fit of the proton magnetic momentum is found.Comment: 13 pages, needs axodraw.ps and axodraw.sty for diagrams of Fig.

    Genesis and Morphology of Mima Mounds and Associated Soils at Kalsow Prairie, Iowa

    The objectives of this study were to identify the genesis of Kalsow Prairie Mirna mounds and to compare on-mound and off-mound soil properties. Kalsow Prairie is a 60 ha uncultivated prairie remnant in north-central Iowa. A 4 ha zone near the center of Kalsow Prairie containing 59 mounds was selected for detailed field study. Field methods included mapping the spatial distribution of mounds, measuring mound geometry, and sampling and describing soil profiles associated with both on-mound and off-mound landscape positions. The average height and diameter of the mounds was 0.23 m and 3.7 m, respectively. Twenty-nine of the mounds showed ongoing pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius) burrowing. This, in conjunction with the formation of 40 new mounds since 1969, indicates pocket gopher burrowing is the mode of Mirna mound genesis at Kalsow Prairie. Borrowing has resulted in significant differences between on-mound and off-mound soil morphology. The average mollie epipedon thickness for on-mound and adjacent off-mound soils was 115 em and 78 em, respectively

    A huge Omental Lymphangioma with extention into Labia Majorae: A case report

    BACKGROUND: Abdominal cystic lymphangiomas are uncommon congenital benign tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 4 year old female child with a cystic lymphangioma arising from greater omentum and occupying whole of the abdomen and protruding through labia mejora. Ultrasonography and CT scan confirmed the diagnosis. Complete excision of the cyst along with omentectomy done with no clinical or radiological evidence of recurrence till 6 months. CONCLUSION: Due to variable presentation of abdominal lymphangiomas, extensive imaging studies are necessary for evaluation and diagnosis. Complete surgical resection is a treatment of choice

    Hadronic properties of the S_{11}(1535) studied by electroproduction off the deuteron

    Properties of excited baryonic states are investigated in the context of electroproduction of baryon resonances off the deuteron. In particular, the hadronic radii and the compositeness of baryon resonances are studied for kinematic situations in which their hadronic reinteraction is the dominant contribution. Specifically, we study the reaction d(e,eS11)Nd(e,e'S_{11})N at Q21GeV2Q^2\ge 1 GeV^2 for kinematics in which the produced hadronic state reinteracts predominantly with the spectator nucleon. A comparison of constituent quark model and effective chiral Lagrangian calculations of the S11S_{11} shows substantial sensitivity to the structure of the produced resonance.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Photo- and Electroproduction of Eta Mesons

    Eta photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is investigated in an effective lagrangian approach that contains Born terms and both vector meson and nucleon resonance contributions. In particular, we review and develop the formalism for coincidence experiments with polarization degrees of freedom. The different response functions appearing in single and double polarization experiments have been studied.     Perianal Pediatric Crohn Disease Is Associated With a Distinct Phenotype and Greater Inflammatory Burden

    Objectives: Data on the outcomes of children with perianal Crohn disease (pCD) are limited, although its presence is often used for justifying early use of biologics. We aimed to assess whether pCD in children is associated with more severe outcomes as found in adults. Methods: Data were extracted from the ImageKids database, a prospective, multicenter, longitudinal cohort study. The study enrolled 246 children at disease onset or thereafter. All patients underwent comprehensive clinical, endoscopic, and radiologic evaluation at enrollment;98 children had repeat evaluation at 18 months. Results: Of the 234 included patients (mean age 14.2 +/- 2.4 years;131 [56%] boys), 57 (24%) had perianal findings, whereas only 21 (9%) had fistulizing perianal disease. Children with pCD had reduced weight and height z scores compared with non-pCD patients (-0.9 vs -0.35, P = 0.03 and -0.68 vs -0.23, respectively;P = 0.04), higher weighted pediatric CD activity index (32 [interquartile range 16-50] vs 20 [8-37];P = 0.004), lower serum albumin (3.6 +/- 0.7 vs 4.5 +/- 0.8, P = 0.016), and higher magnetic resonance enterography global inflammatory score (P = 0.04). Children with pCD had more rectal (57% vs 38%, P = 0.04), and jejunal involvement (31% vs 11% P = 0.003) and a higher prevalence of granulomas (64% vs 23%, P = 0.0001). Magnetic resonance enterography-based damage scores did not differ between groups. Patients with skin tags/fissures only, had similar clinical, endoscopic, and radiologic characteristics as patients with no perianal findings. Conclusions: Pediatric patients with pCD with fistulizing disease have distinct phenotypic features and a predisposition to a greater inflammatory burden

    The Role of Color Neutrality in Nuclear Physics--Modifications of Nucleonic Wave Functions

    The influence of the nuclear medium upon the internal structure of a composite nucleon is examined. The interaction with the medium is assumed to depend on the relative distances between the quarks in the nucleon consistent with the notion of color neutrality, and to be proportional to the nucleon density. In the resulting description the nucleon in matter is a superposition of the ground state (free nucleon) and radial excitations. The effects of the nuclear medium on the electromagnetic and weak nucleon form factors, and the nucleon structure function are computed using a light-front constituent quark model. Further experimental consequences are examined by considering the electromagnetic nuclear response functions. The effects of color neutrality supply small but significant corrections to predictions of observables.Comment: 37 pages, postscript figures available on request to [email protected]
