Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Northeastern UniversityThe gas phase absorption spectra of mercuric chloride, mercuric bromide and mercuric iodide have been measured with photoelectric detection in the region 2300 {\AA} to 1050 {\AA}, using a 1 meter monochromator of 1.0 {\AA} band width. Several new bands were observed below 1600 {\AA} in all three compounds, as well as additional structure in some of the bands above 1600 {\AA}. Mercuric iodide vapor showed new structure on the long-wavelength side of the 2240 {\AA} band and new bands in the 1600 {\AA}. 1280 {\AA} and 1200 {\AA} regions. Further, a highly structured band begins at 1160 {\AA} and extends below 1070 {\AA}. For the bromide, new bands are reported in the 1540 {\AA}, 1450 {\AA}, 1390 {\AA} and 1130 {\AA} regions, and for the chloride in the 1500 {\AA} to 1430 {\AA} region as well as at 1075 {\AA}. The experimental results will be correlated with Extended Huckel-Type molecular orbital calculations
