Mobile remote manipulator system for a tetrahedral truss

    Get PDF
The mobile remote manipulator system (MRMS) was initially developed for transit about the trusses of the delta space station; however, it can be utilized just as easily for transit about the trusses of the dual keel station. The MRMS is comprised of a mobile platform having a rail system formed of transversely disposed T-shaped tracks, which engage with guide pins located at the nodes of the trusses. The guide pins form a grid and the tracks are so designed as to permit travel in either of two orthogonal directions. The present invention provides a near-uniform traversing velocity with minimal dynamic loading on the system. Pivoting changers move the platform from one face to another

Numerical Implementation of Harmonic Polylogarithms to Weight w = 8

We present the FORTRAN-code HPOLY.f for the numerical calculation of harmonic polylogarithms up to w = 8 at an absolute accuracy of ∼4.9⋅10−15\sim 4.9 \cdot 10^{-15} or better. Using algebraic and argument relations the numerical representation can be limited to the range x∈[0,2−1]x \in [0, \sqrt{2}-1]. We provide replacement files to map all harmonic polylogarithms to a basis and the usual range of arguments x∈]−∞,+∞[x \in ]-\infty,+\infty[ to the above interval analytically. We also briefly comment on a numerical implementation of real valued cyclotomic harmonic polylogarithms.Comment: 19 pages LATEX, 3 Figures, ancillary dat

Evaluation of atomic constants for optical radiation, volume 1

    Get PDF
Atomic constants for optical radiation are discussed which include transition probabilities, line strengths, and oscillator strengths for both dipole and quadrupole transitions, as well as the associated matrix elements needed for line broadening calculations. Atomic constants were computed for a wide selection of elements and lines. An existing computer program was used, with modifications to include, in an approximate manner, the effect of equivalent electrons, and to enable reordering and restructuring of the output for publication. This program is suitable for fast, low cost computation of the optical constants, using the Coulomb approximation formalism for LS coupling

The challenging scales of the bird: Shuttle tile structural integrity

    Get PDF
The principal design issues, tests, and analyses required to solve the tile integrity problem on the space shuttle orbiters are addressed. Proof testing of installed tiles is discussed along with an airflow test of special tiles. Orbiter windshield tiles are considered in terms of changes necessary to ensure acceptable margins of safety for flight

Iterated Binomial Sums and their Associated Iterated Integrals

We consider finite iterated generalized harmonic sums weighted by the binomial (2kk)\binom{2k}{k} in numerators and denominators. A large class of these functions emerges in the calculation of massive Feynman diagrams with local operator insertions starting at 3-loop order in the coupling constant and extends the classes of the nested harmonic, generalized harmonic and cyclotomic sums. The binomially weighted sums are associated by the Mellin transform to iterated integrals over square-root valued alphabets. The values of the sums for N→∞N \rightarrow \infty and the iterated integrals at x=1x=1 lead to new constants, extending the set of special numbers given by the multiple zeta values, the cyclotomic zeta values and special constants which emerge in the limit N→∞N \rightarrow \infty of generalized harmonic sums. We develop algorithms to obtain the Mellin representations of these sums in a systematic way. They are of importance for the derivation of the asymptotic expansion of these sums and their analytic continuation to N∈CN \in \mathbb{C}. The associated convolution relations are derived for real parameters and can therefore be used in a wider context, as e.g. for multi-scale processes. We also derive algorithms to transform iterated integrals over root-valued alphabets into binomial sums. Using generating functions we study a few aspects of infinite (inverse) binomial sums.Comment: 62 pages Latex, 1 style fil

Experimental active and passive dosimetry systems for the NASA Skylab program

    Get PDF
Active and passive dosimetry instrumentation to measure absorbed dose, charged particle spectra, and linear energy transfer spectra inside the command module and orbital workshop on the Skylab program were developed and tested. The active dosimetry system consists of one integral unit employing both a tissue equivalent ionization chamber and silicon solid state detectors. The instrument measures dose rates from 0.2 millirad/hour to 25 rads/hour, linear energy transfer spectra from 2.8 to 42.4 Kev/micron, and the proton and alpha particle energy spectra from 0.5 to 75 Mev. The active dosimeter is equipped with a portable radiation sensor for use in astronaut on-body and spacecraft shielding surveys during passage of the Skylab through significant space radiations. Data are transmitted in real time or are recorded by onboard spacecraft tape recorder for rapid evaluation of the radiation levels. The passive dosimetry systems consist of twelve (12) hard-mounted assemblies, each containing a variety of passive radiation sensors which are recoverable at the end of the mission for analysis

The two-mass contribution to the three-loop pure singlet operator matrix element

We present the two-mass QCD contributions to the pure singlet operator matrix element at three loop order in x-space. These terms are relevant for calculating the structure function F2(x,Q2)F_2(x,Q^2) at O(αs3)O(\alpha_s^3) as well as for the matching relations in the variable flavor number scheme and the heavy quark distribution functions at the same order. The result for the operator matrix element is given in terms of generalized iterated integrals that include square root letters in the alphabet, depending also on the mass ratio through the main argument. Numerical results are presented.Comment: 28 papges Latex, 3 figure
