A climatically-derived global soil moisture data set for use in the GLAS atmospheric circulation model seasonal cycle experiment
Algorithms for point interpolation and contouring on the surface of the sphere and in Cartesian two-space are developed from Shepard's (1968) well-known, local search method. These mapping procedures then are used to investigate the errors which appear on small-scale climate maps as a result of the all-too-common practice of of interpolating, from irregularly spaced data points to the nodes of a regular lattice, and contouring Cartesian two-space. Using mean annual air temperatures field over the western half of the northern hemisphere is estimated both on the sphere, assumed to be correct, and in Cartesian two-space. When the spherically- and Cartesian-approximted air temperature fields are mapped and compared, the magnitudes (as large as 5 C to 10 C) and distribution of the errors associated with the latter approach become apparent
Higgs boson production with one bottom quark including higher-order soft-gluon corrections
A Higgs boson produced in association with one or more bottom quarks is of
great theoretical and experimental interest to the high-energy community. A
precise prediction of its total and differential cross-section can have a great
impact on the discovery of a Higgs boson with large bottom-quark Yukawa
coupling, like the scalar (h^0 and H^0) and pseudoscalar (A^0) Higgs bosons of
the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) in the region of large
\tan\beta. In this paper we apply the threshold resummation formalism to
determine both differential and total cross-sections for b g \to b\Phi (where
\Phi = h^0, H^0), including up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO)
soft plus virtual QCD corrections at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL)
accuracy. We present results for both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large
Hadron Collider (LHC).Comment: revtex4, 13 pages, 11 figures; new references and additional comment
Derivation of the Lorentz Force Law, the Magnetic Field Concept and the Faraday-Lenz Law using an Invariant Formulation of the Lorentz Transformation
It is demonstrated how the right hand sides of the Lorentz Transformation
equations may be written, in a Lorentz invariant manner, as 4--vector scalar
products. This implies the existence of invariant length intervals analogous to
invariant proper time intervals. This formalism, making essential use of the
4-vector electromagnetic potential concept, provides a short derivation of the
Lorentz force law of classical electrodynamics, the conventional definition of
the magnetic field, in terms of spatial derivatives of the 4--vector potential
and the Faraday-Lenz Law. An important distinction between the physical
meanings of the space-time and energy-momentum 4--vectors is pointed out.Comment: 15 pages, no tables 1 figure. Revised and extended version of

A Toy Model of Flying Snake's Glide
We have developed a toy model of flying snake's glide [J.J. Socha, Nature
vol. 418 (2002) 603.] by modifying a model for a falling paper. We have found
that asymmetric oscillation is a key about why snake can glide. Further
investigation for snake's glide will provide us details about how it can glide
without a wing.Comment: 6 pages, to be submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. Revised Version

On the Application of Gluon to Heavy Quarkonium Fragmentation Functions
We analyze the uncertainties induced by different definitions of the momentum
fraction in the application of gluon to heavy quarkonium fragmentation
function. We numerically calculate the initial fragmentation
functions by using the non-covariant definitions of with finite gluon
momentum and find that these fragmentation functions have strong dependence on
the gluon momentum . As , these fragmentation
functions approach to the fragmentation function in the light-cone definition.
Our numerical results show that large uncertainties remains while the
non-covariant definitions of are employed in the application of the
fragmentation functions. We present for the first time the polarized gluon to
fragmentation functions, which are fitted by the scheme exploited in
this work.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures;added reference for sec.
The Indirect Limit on the Standard Model Higgs Boson Mass from the Precision FERMILAB, LEP and SLD Data
Standard Model fits are performed on the most recent leptonic and b quark Z
decay data from LEP and SLD, and FERMILAB data on top quark production, to
obtain and . Poor fits are obtained, with confidence levels
2%. Removing the b quark data improves markedly the quality of the fits and
reduces the 95% CL upper limit on by 50 GeV.Comment: 6 pages 3 tables i figur
Strategy towards Mirror-fermion Signatures
The existence of mirror fermions interacting strongly under a new gauge group
and having masses near the electroweak scale has been recently proposed as a
viable alternative to the standard-model Higgs mechanism. The main purpose of
this work is to investigate which specific experimental signals are needed to
clearly differentiate the mirror-fermion model from other new-physics models.
In particular, the case is made for a future large lepton collider with c.o.m.
energies of roughly 4 TeV or higher.Comment: 30 Latex pages, 2 postscript figure
