Dynamics of a cold trapped ion in a Bose-Einstein condensate
We investigate the interaction of a laser-cooled trapped ion (Ba or
Rb) with an optically confined Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).
The system features interesting dynamics of the ion and the atom cloud as
determined by their collisions and their motion in their respective traps.
Elastic as well as inelastic processes are observed and their respective cross
sections are determined. We demonstrate that a single ion can be used to probe
the density profile of an ultracold atom cloud.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Exploring the BEC-BCS Crossover with an Ultracold Gas of Li Atoms
We present an overview of our recent measurements on the crossover from a
Bose-Einstein condensate of molecules to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer
superfluid. The experiments are performed on a two-component spin-mixture of
Li atoms, where a Fesh\-bach resonance serves as the experimental key to
tune the s-wave scattering length and thus to explore the various interaction
regimes. In the BEC-BCS crossover, we have characterized the interaction energy
by measuring the size of the trapped gas, we have studied collective excitation
modes, and we have observed the pairing gap. Our observations provide strong

Observation of the Pairing Gap in a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas
We study fermionic pairing in an ultracold two-component gas of Li atoms
by observing an energy gap in the radio-frequency excitation spectra. With
control of the two-body interactions via a Feshbach resonance we demonstrate
the dependence of the pairing gap on coupling strength, temperature, and Fermi
energy. The appearance of an energy gap with moderate evaporative cooling
suggests that our full evaporation brings the strongly interacting system deep

Dynamics of a strongly interacting Fermi gas: the radial quadrupole mode
We report on measurements of an elementary surface mode in an ultracold,
strongly interacting Fermi gas of 6Li atoms. The radial quadrupole mode allows
us to probe hydrodynamic behavior in the BEC-BCS crossover without being
influenced by changes in the equation of state. We examine frequency and
damping of this mode, along with its expansion dynamics. In the unitarity limit
and on the BEC side of the resonance, the observed frequencies agree with
standard hydrodynamic theory. However, on the BCS side of the crossover, a
striking down shift of the oscillation frequency is observed in the
hydrodynamic regime as a precursor to an abrupt transition to collisionless
behavior; this indicates coupling of the oscillation to fermionic pairs.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures v2: minor change
Finite-Temperature Collective Dynamics of a Fermi Gas in the BEC-BCS Crossover
We report on experimental studies on the collective behavior of a strongly
interacting Fermi gas with tunable interactions and variable temperature. A
scissors mode excitation in an elliptical trap is used to characterize the
dynamics of the quantum gas in terms of hydrodynamic or near-collisionless
behavior. We obtain a crossover phase diagram for collisional properties,
showing a large region where a non-superfluid strongly interacting gas shows
hydrodynamic behavior. In a narrow interaction regime on the BCS side of the
crossover, we find a novel temperature-dependent damping peak, suggesting a
relation to the superfluid phase transition
The impact of early surgical intervention in free intestinal perforation: a time-to-intervention pilot study
PURPOSES: An abdominal inflammatory focus is the second most often source of sepsis with a high risk of death in surgical intensive care units. By establishing evidence-based bundled strategies the surviving sepsis campaign provided an optimized rapid and continuous treatment of these emergency patients. Hereby the hospital mortality decreased from 35 to 30%. Sepsis treatment is based on three major therapeutic elements: surgical treatment (source control), antiinfective treatment, and supportive care. The international guidelines of the surviving sepsis campaign were updated recently and recommend rapid diagnosis of the infection and source control within the first 12h after the diagnosis (grade 1c). Interestingly this recommendation is mainly based on studies on soft tissue infections.
METHODS: In this retrospective analysis 76 septic patients with an intraabdominal inflammatory focus were included. All patients underwent surgery at different time-points after diagnosis.
RESULTS: With 80% patients of the early intervention group had an improved overall survival (vs. 73% in the late intervention group).
CONCLUSIONS: Literature on the time dependency of early source control is rare and in part contradicting. Results of this pilot study reveal that immediate surgical intervention might be of advantage for septic emergency patients. Further multi-center approaches will be necessary to evaluate, whether the TTI has any impact on the outcome of septic patients with intestinal perforation
The psychological contract of knowledge workers
Purpose: This paper explores whether the concept of psychological contracts underpinned by relational/transactional exchanges provides an adequate description of knowledge workers’ contracts.
Methodology: The research approach uses interviews with 10 scientists from within a pre-eminent Australian scientific research and development organisation, the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Findings: The research strong evidence of an ideological currency within the psychological contract for this set of knowledge workers.
Implications: The research raises questions over the role of normative occupation-specific beliefs about work, and the sharing of common currency elements by individuals in the same organization within the same occupation. The analysis lends support to calls in the literature for a reconsideration of the transactional/relational interpretative framework that underpins the psychological contract
Precision Measurements of Collective Oscillations in the BEC-BCS Crossover
We report on precision measurements of the frequency of the radial
compression mode in a strongly interacting, optically trapped Fermi gas of Li-6
atoms. Our results allow for a test of theoretical predictions for the equation
of state in the BEC-BCS crossover. We confirm recent quantum Monte-Carlo
results and rule out simple mean-field BCS theory. Our results show the
long-sought beyond-mean-field effects in the strongly interacting BEC regime.Comment: improved discussion of small ellipticity and anharmonicity

Hyperfine, rotational and Zeeman structure of the lowest vibrational levels of the Rb \tripletex state
We present the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the
electronically excited \tripletex state of Rb molecules. The
vibrational energies are measured for deeply bound states from the bottom up to
using laser spectroscopy of ultracold Rb Feshbach molecules. The
spectrum of each vibrational state is dominated by a 47\,GHz splitting into a
\cog and \clg component caused mainly by a strong second order spin-orbit
interaction. Our spectroscopy fully resolves the rotational, hyperfine, and
Zeeman structure of the spectrum. We are able to describe to first order this
structure using a simplified effective Hamiltonian.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 table
