Holomorphic symmetric differentials and parallelizable compact complex manifolds
We provide a characterization of complex tori using holomorphic symmetric
differentials. With the same method we show that compact complex manifolds of
Kodaira dimension 0 having some symmetric power of the cotangent bundle
globally generated are quotients of parallelizable manifolds, therefore have an
infinite fundamental group
STUDENT NUMBERS AND SUSTAINING COURSES AND FIELDS IN PH.D. PROGRAMS
Many agricultural economics departments are concerned about the vitality of their Ph.D. programs. A particular problem is insufficient student numbers to justify teaching certain courses or fields. As a consequence, much faculty time can be spent debating alternative program structures without any real idea of the likelihood that a proposed program structure will succeed. This article presents a framework for deriving some analytical and empirical results for alternative Ph.D. program structures. A downloadable program is used to generate some representative results that will hopefully help others minimize speculations and time spent in committee or departmental meetings.Ph.D. programs, student numbers, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession, A2, Q1,
The Impact of Interest-rate Subsidies on Long-term Household Debt: Evidence from a Large Program
The responsiveness of long-term household debt to the interest rate is a crucial parameter for assessing the effectiveness of public policies aimed at promoting specific types of saving. This paper estimates the effect of a reform of Credito Bonificado, a large program in Portugal that subsidized mortgage interest rates, on long-term household debt. The reform established a ceiling in the price of the house that could be financed through the program, and provides plausibly exogenous variation in incentives. Using a unique dataset of matched household survey data and administrative records of debt, we document a large decrease in the probability of signing a new loan after the removal of the subsidy.

Why Slowing Population Growth in the Philippines is an Imperative
Sometime in the early 1970s, the Philippines and Thailand had about the same population size. Today, the Philippine population has grown so much bigger than that of Thailand. Why? Because Thailand pursued a population program with such vigor that it was able to bring down its annual population growth rate. In the mid-1960s, the Philippines had a higher per capita income than Thailand. Today, Thais have per capita incomes almost two-and-a-half times higher than Filipinos. Is there a connection somewhere?demographic economics, population and family relation
