    FIRM MANAGEMENT, STRATEGY, RESOURCES, AND PRESENCE ON THE WEB

    This paper examines the variables associated with a firm having a site on the World Wide Web and with the site's characteristics. We predict that company leadership and strategy, firm resources and the need to communicate with the public are associated with the presence of Web sites and their characteristics. To test the predictions, we use data from the Business Week 1000 largest firms in the US., two year's of chairmans' annual report letters, and a survey of Web sites. The results show that firm leadership and strategy is the strongest predictor of having a Web site and its characteristics. Firm resources and the need to communicate are also positively associated with Web sites. The presence of a Web site and its evaluation appear to be independent of industry classification. We explore the implications of the results for firm strategy toward the adoption of technological innovations.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

    Quasi-equilibria in one-dimensional self-gravitating many body systems

    The microscopic dynamics of one-dimensional self-gravitating many-body systems is studied. We examine two courses of the evolution which has the isothermal and stationary water-bag distribution as initial conditions. We investigate the evolution of the systems toward thermal equilibrium. It is found that when the number of degrees of freedom of the system is increased, the water-bag distribution becomes a quasi-equilibrium, and also the stochasticity of the system reduces. This results suggest that the phase space of the system is effectively not ergodic and the system with large degreees of freedom approaches to the near-integrable one.Comment: 21pages + 7 figures (available upon request), revtex, submitted to Physical Review

    Vodcast as ideating medium in STEM lesson plan in teaching heat transfer

    This study attempts to link the clay soil in the locality to the topic of heat transfer as a contextualization point. It attempted to slightly modify the seven-step STEM lesson by having the part of the prototyping be first tried by the teacher, thereby having a change-of-hat to anticipate the ‘what if’ questions of the students. The teacher-researchers experimentation provided critical information to scaffold the students in the prototyping part.  The evaluation of experts shows that the modified STEM lesson can be an excellent tool and the vodcast has been found to be a very satisfactory component of the STEM lesson. It is described as a very useful material in teaching heat transfer and related thermodynamics concepts and is highly recommended for use in both distance learning and face-to-face modality. Further, the clay oven exploration has come up with a refined clay oven production process, wherein the clay oven prototype has the capacity for the contextualization of heat transfer. It is recommended that a formal implementation be conducted to refine and standardize the lesson delivery

    The role of the final state interactions (FSI) in the inclusive quasi-elastic disintegration of the deuteron is investigated treating the two-nucleon final state within the exact continuum solutions of the non-relativistic Schroedinger equation, as well as within the Glauber multiple scattering approach. It is shown that for values of the Bjorken scaling variable xBj≃1x_{Bj}\simeq 1 both approaches provide similar results, unless the case xBj≳1x_{Bj}\gtrsim 1, where they appreciably disagree. It is demonstrated that present experimental data, which are mostly limited to a region of four-momentum transfer (Q2≲4(GeV/c)2Q^2 \lesssim 4 (GeV/c)^2) where the Center-of-Mass energy of the final state is below the pion threshold production, can be satisfactorily reproduced by the approach based on the exact solution of the Schroedinger equation and not by the Glauber approach. It is also pointed out that the latter, unlike the former, does not satisfy the inelastic Coulomb sum rule, the violation being of the order of about 20%.Comment: 16 LaTeX pages, 10 eps-figures, 1 tabl

    Management and decision support system for smallholder tree plantation developers

    This paper reports experiences and inferences in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for smallholder tree plantation development in Regions 2, 10, and 13 in the Philippines. It was found out that farmers in these regions are not practicing intensive plantation management. Silvicultural practices and cultural management including weeding, fertilization, pruning and thinning, if practiced, are done arbitrarily. Choice of species is mainly based on seed availability, and time for harvest is selected based on gut feeling and more often dictated by the need to convert crops to liquid assets. Although the farmers claimed they are realizing positive returns from investment, analysis showed that the production from plantations can be increased. A DSS is being developed to show these realities to the farmers and to allow them to evaluate options to increase production. The main component of the system is a database on silvicultural regimes and management requirements of mahogany, mangium and yemane in plantations. Data were gathered from reported results of previous studies. The DSS also has a database of the various policies affecting the decisions that farmers take. The other component of the system is a dynamic growth model that simulates plantation performance. With the databases and the dynamic models put together in a DSS, a decision-support tool is developed that allows the developers to conduct a trial and error or ‘what if’ analysis on a proposed or existing plantation, prior to implementation of an activity or treatment. The DSS is being developed to assist smallholder tree plantation developers in making technical and business decisions, from choice of species to conduct of cultural management activities to final harvest to transport of raw materials
