    Can We Train Cops Virtually?​ Evaluating the Feasibility of Online, Collaborative, Police Training

    High profile police shootings around the country have caused states and communities to examine how to improve the quality of policing. For example, reports from expert panels convened by Ohio’s Governor and the Ohio Attorney General both recommended expanding law enforcement training requirements as a way to enhance the quality of policing. However, the ability to improve policing through better in-service faces two key obstacles: - Lack of resources: Most police departments do not have the personnel or financial resources to provide regular, high quality training . Eighty-seven percent of police departments have 25 or fewer officers, which means they often lack the expertise and shift coverage to provide regular training during work shifts. -Variable quality of training: Additional training requirements will not improve policing if the training is not high quality and does not focus on application in real-world contexts. Yet, in-service police training often involves sitting in a room listening to a lecture with little or no assessment or application of learning.     Exploring the nuclear pion dispersion relation through the anomalous coupling of photon to photon and neutral pion

    We investigate the possibility of measuring the pion dispersion relation in nuclear matter through the anomalous coupling in the reaction \gamma - \gamma' \pi_0. It is shown that this reaction permits the study of pionic modes for space-like momenta. If the pion is softened in nuclear matter due to mixing with the delta-hole state, significant strength for this reaction is expected to move into the space-like region. Competing background processes are evaluated, and it is concluded that useful insight can be obtained experimentally, but only through a difficult exclusive measurement

    Existence and Stability of N-Pulses on Optical Fibers with Phase-Sensitive Amplifiers

    The propagation of pulses in optical communication systems in which attenuation is compensated by phase-sensitive amplifiers is investigated. A central issue is whether optical fibers are capable of carrying several pieces of information at the same time. In this paper, multiple pulses are shown to exist for a fourth-order nonlinear diffusion model due to Kutz and co-workers [10]. Moreover, criteria are derived for determining which of these pulses are stable. The pulses arise in a reversible orbit-flip, a homoclinic bifurcation investigated here for the first time. Numerical simulations are used to study multiple pulses far away from the actual bifurcation point. They confirm that properties of the multiple pulses including their stability are surprisingly well predicted by the analysis carried out near the bifurcation

In this paper, we describe how to combine several existing tools and web archive holdings to convey the “biggest story” for a given date in the past. StoryGraph clusters news articles together to identify a common news story. Hypercane leverages ArchiveNow to store URLs produced by Story-Graph in web archives. Hypercane analyzes these URLs to identify the most common terms, entities, and highest quality images for social media storytelling. Raintale then takes the output of these tools to produce a visualization of the news story for a given day. We name this process SHARI (StoryGraph Hypercane ArchiveNow Raintale Integration). With SHARI, a user can visualize the articles belonging to a past date’s news story

    Regression correction equation to adjust serum iron and ferritin concentrations based on C-reactive protein and albumin in patients receiving primary and secondary care

    Background: Systemic inflammation, even at low levels, can greatly interfere with measures of iron status, making diagnosis of iron deficiency difficult. The objective of the present study was to create linear regression correction equations to adjust serum ferritin and iron concentrations based on measurements of the acute-phase proteins C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin. Methods: Data from a cohort (1) of patients (n = 7226) in primary and secondary care who had serum ferritin, iron, CRP, and albumin measured at the same time point were examined. Linear regression coefficients were calculated for CRP and albumin with serum iron and ferritin as the outcome variables. Patients with ferritin <15 µg/L or serum iron <10 µmol/L were categorized as iron deficient. The equation was then applied to a cohort (2) of patients with colorectal cancer who had ferritin and iron measured preoperatively ( n = 356). Results: In cohort 1 there was a significant difference in the proportions of patients with serum ferritin <15 µg/L and serum iron <10 µmol/L, respectively, when the unadjusted (7% and 55%), adjusted based on CRP alone (13% and 26%), adjusted based on albumin alone (11% and 37%), and adjusted based on both CRP and albumin (24% and 15%) values were compared (both P < 0.001). In cohort 2 there was a significant difference in the proportions of patients with serum ferritin <15 µg/L and serum iron <10 µmol/L, respectively, when the unadjusted (28% and 66%), adjusted based on CRP alone (39% and 57%), adjusted based on albumin alone (39% and 59%), and adjusted based on both CRP and albumin (46% and 44%) values were compared (P < 0.001 and P < 0.004). Conclusions: In both cohorts the greatest increase in the proportion of patients meeting definitions of iron deficiency was found when adjustment was made for both CRP and albumin together. Even low levels of inflammation had a significant effect on serum iron and ferritin values
