    Intrusive vowels preceding /R/ in Quebec French

    It has been observed (e.g. [2]) that an intrusive vowel (Vi) is frequently produced in obstruent+/R/ clusters, which is interpreted as a cluster simplification process. Here we look at Vi next to /R/ in a broader variety of contexts, in a corpus of 12,981 words read by 103 speakers of Quebec French [3, 4]. LMM shows that Vi is more likely to appear word- initially than in clusters, which questions the interpretation of Vi in terms of simplification. Vi is also more likely to appear with apical than dorsal /R/ (both attested in Quebec French) and, in clusters, after voiced obstruents. Vi is significantly more frequent in monosyllabic than in polysyllabic words. Regarding the quality of Vi, t-tests between Vi and the following vowel’s mean F1 and F2 (Hz) and duration show that there is little to no difference between the quality of the two vowels, though Vi is significantly shorter

    Hypoarticulation as a tool for assessing social distance: an acoustic study of speech addressed to different types of interlocutors

    Work within Hyper-Hypoarticulation Theory (H&H) and Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) is increasingly focused on the adaptation of speech to the identity of the interlocutor (Koppen et al. 2017, Pardo et al. 2012, among others). These studies show a correlation between changes in the rate and spectral characteristics of speech (especially vowels) and the relationship between the speakers. Using the Diapix task (Baker & Hazan 2011), 10 Québec-French-speaking couples were invited to interact together and with two strangers, one French and one Québécois. This produced a corpus of 25h of speech and 121000 vowels. Spectral variations (especially hyper- / hypo- articulation), and changes in speech rate depending on the interlocutor, were studied using ((G)LMM) analysis. Our results reveal a correlation between the degree of social distance and speech reduction: the closer the interlocutors are (partners), the more speech is reduced

    La légende de Théophile est complexe et elle occupe une place privilégiée dans l’Occident médiéval. Elle est représentée dans plusieurs manuscrits et sur de nombreux vitraux. Elle est également sculptée sur les parois de quelques églises et elle bénéficie très tôt d’une vaste tradition textuelle. L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser ce thème en l’articulant à la réalité historique, aux comportements humains, mais aussi en effectuant de continuels allers et retours entre les images, les textes et leur environnement. Ainsi, l’étude sérielle et relationnelle de cinquante images provenant de supports variés (manuscrits, vitraux, images sculptées), combinée à l’analyse de plusieurs textes, révèle la dynamique et l’inventivité des représentations de cette légende particulièrement entre le IXe et le XVIe siècle

    Developing Resources for Automated Speech Processing of Quebec French

    International audienceThe analysis of the structure of speech nearly always rests on the alignment of the speech recording with a phonetic transcription. Nowadays several tools can perform this speech segmentation automatically. However, none of them carries out the automatic segmentation of Quebec French (QF hereafter) in a proper way. Contrary to what could be assumed, the acoustics and phonotactics of QF differs widely from that of France French (FF hereafter). To adequately segment QF, features like diphthongization of long vowels and affrication of coronal stops have to be taken into account. Thus acoustic models for automatic segmentation must be trained on speech samples exhibiting those phenomena. Dictionaries and lexicons must also be adapted and integrate differences in lexical units (such as very frequent words in QF that are not used in FF) and in the phonology of QF (such as the existence of tense and lax high vowels in QF but not in FF). This paper presents the development of linguistic resources to be included into the SPPAS software tool in order to get Text normalization, Phonetization, Alignment and Syllabification. We adapted the existing French lexicon and developed a QF-specific pronunciation dictionary. We then created an acoustic model from the existing ones and adapted it with 5 minutes of manually time-aligned data. These new resources are all freely distributed with SPPAS version 2.7; they perform the full process of speech segmentation in Quebec French

    Phonostyle et réduction vocalique en français laurentien

    Cet article étudie le lien entre réduction vocalique et phonostyle en français laurentien en suivant une méthodologie proche de celle de Harmegnies et Poch-Olivé [1992,1994]. Nous avons analysé 9748 voyelles, produites par 10 locutrices issues du corpus PFC-Canada. Ces voyelles ont été produites dans trois styles de parole différents : la lecture, une conversation avec un enquêteur et une conversation avec un membre de la famille. Nous avons comparé la durée, la centralisation, la dispersion intra-catégorie et la diffusion des voyelles en fonction du style de parole. Nos résultats montrent un impact de la tâche de production (lecture/discussion), ainsi qu’un impact de la relation entre le locuteur et l’interlocuteur (inconnu/famille) sur la réalisation acoustique des voyelles. Les voyelles sont plus courtes et plus dispersées au sein de leur catégorie, et le système plus centralisé, en parole spontanée qu’en lecture. Elles sont également plus courtes et plus dispersées au sein de leur catégorie lors d’une discussion avec un membre de la famille que lors d’une discussion avec un enquêteur inconnu

    Adipose tissue attenuation and adipocyte size

    Objective: To assess the ability of CT-derived measurements including adipose tissue attenuation and area to predict fat cell hypertrophy and related cardiometabolic risk. Methods: Abdominal adipose tissue areas and radiologic attenuation were assessed using 4 CT images in 241 women (age: 47 years, BMI: 26.5 kg/m2). Fat cell weight was measured in paired VAT and SAT samples. Fasting plasma lipids, glucose and insulin levels were measured. Results: Adipose tissue attenuation was negatively correlated with SAT (r=-0.46) and VAT (r=-0.67) fat cell weight in the corresponding depot (p<0.0001 for both). Women with visceral adipocyte hypertrophy had higher total-, VLDL-, LDL- and HDL-triglyceride and apoB levels as well as a higher cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio, fasting glucose and insulin levels compared to women with smaller visceral adipocytes. Adjustment for VAT area minimized these differences while subsequent adjustment for attenuation eliminated all differences, with the exception of fasting glycaemia. In SAT, adjustment for VAT area and attenuation eliminated all adipocyte hypertrophy-related alterations except for fasting hyperglycaemia. Conclusion: CT-derived adipose tissue attenuation and area both contribute to explain variation in the cardiometabolic risk profile associated with the same biological parameter: visceral fat cell hypertrophy

    Human visceral and subcutaneous adipocyte isolation and dedifferentiation

    Mature adipocytes have been recently shown to reverse their phenotype into fibroblast-like cells in vitro through a technique called ceiling culture. Mature adipocytes can also be isolated from fresh adipose tissue for depot-specific characterization of their function and metabolic properties. Here, we describe a well-established protocol to isolate mature adipocytes from adipose tissues using collagenase digestion, and subsequent steps to perform ceiling cultures. Briefly, adipose tissues are incubated in a Krebs-Ringer-Henseleit buffer containing collagenase to disrupt tissue matrix. Floating mature adipocytes are collected on the top surface of the buffer. Mature cells are plated in a T25-flask completely filled with media and incubated up-side down for a week. An alternative 6-well plate culture approach allows the characterization of adipocytes undergoing dedifferentiation. Adipocyte morphology drastically changes over time of culture. Immunofluorescence can be easily performed on slides cultivated in 6-well plate as demonstrated 65 by FABP4 immunofluorescence staining. FABP4 protein is present in mature adipocytes but down-regulated through dedifferentiation of fat cells. Mature adipocyte dedifferentiation may represent a new avenue for cell therapy and tissue engineering

    Impact of adiponectin gene polymorphisms on plasma lipoprotein and adiponectin concentrations of viscerally obese men

    The aim of this study was first to examine the relationships between adiponectin gene (Apm1) polymorphisms and anthropometric indices as well as plasma adiponectin and lipoprotein/lipid levels, and then to investigate whether the presence of visceral obesity or insulin resistance may modulate the impact of these polymorphisms on metabolic risk variables. Molecular screening of the Apm1 gene was achieved, and a sample of 270 unrelated men recruited from the greater Quebec City area and selected to cover a wide range of body fatness values was genotyped. Sequencing of the Apm1 gene revealed two previously reported polymorphisms (c.45T>G and c.276G>T) as well as two newly identified genetic variations (−13752delT and −13702G>C). Carriers of the c.276T allele had higher LDL-cholesterol and lower HDL-triglyceride concentrations than did 276G/G homozygotes (P = 0.02 and P = 0.01, respectively). Carriers of the c.45G allele exhibited higher plasma adiponectin concentrations than did 45T/T homozygotes (P = 0.04). After dividing each genotype group into subgroups for visceral AT, homozygotes for the normal allele at position −13752delT, carriers of the c.45G allele, and carriers of the c.276T allele had similar total apolipoprotein B (apoB) concentrations, whether they were viscerally obese or not. These results suggest that some Apm1 gene polymorphisms influence plasma adiponectin concentrations and lipoprotein/lipid levels. In addition, the impact of these polymorphisms is modulated by the presence of visceral obesity

    Coronary Obstruction Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation for Degenerative Bioprosthetic Surgical Valves: a Systematic Literature Review

    ABSTRACTBackgroundVery few data exist on coronary obstruction following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for degenerative bioprosthetic valves (valve-in-valve [ViV]). The present trial evaluated, through a systematic review of the literature, the clinical characteristics, management and clinical outcomes of patients with coronary obstruction after ViV-TAVI.MethodsStudies published between 2002 and 2013 evaluating coronary obstruction as a complication of ViV-TAVI were identified using a systematic electronic search. Data on the clinical and procedural characteristics, management of the complication, and clinical outcomes were analyzed.ResultsA total of four publications describing seven patients were identified. Most patients (71%) were women, with mean age of 82±5 years, and STS-PROM score of 9.4±2.6%. Mean left coronary artery (LCA) ostium height and aortic root width were 8.8±1.5mm and 28.0±5.0mm, respectively. Most patients had stented bioprosthetic valves with externally mounted leaflets or stentless aortic bioprosthesis, and the LCA was involved in all patients. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was attempted in all patients and was successful in four (57%). In-hospital mortality was 42.9% (three cases), all of them after failed PCI.ConclusionsCoronary obstruction following ViV-TAVI occurred more frequently in women with stented bioprosthetic valves with externally mounted leaflets or with stentless bioprosthesis. The LCA was involved in all cases and PCI was successful in 60% of them. Continued efforts may help identify the factors associated with this complication so that appropriate prevention measures may be implemented
