The Brazilian Cerrado contains a large number of fruit species whose nutritional and physical-chemical properties have not been fully characterized to date. The fruit of tucumã (Astrocaryum huaimi Mart) is ellipsoid with fibrous and gelatinous pulp, unique odor, and has significant economic importance in the region. The objective of this study is to analyze the physical-chemical, nutritional, and antioxidant properties of the fruit of tucumã grown in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Water content, ashes, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, total dietary fiber, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, vitamin C, minerals, and fatty acids were analyzed. Total phenols, tannins, and antioxidant activity were analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteau method, Folin-Denis method, and photocolorimetric method of the stable free radical DPPH, respectively, in aqueous, acetone, and ethanol extracts. The most relevant components in the fruit were lipids, fibers, vitamin C, unsaturated fatty acids, iron, potassium, manganese, and bioactive compounds. The analysis of the bioactive compounds revealed that the fruit has high antioxidant activity. The acetone extract presented the highest antioxidant capacity followed by the ethanol and aqueous extracts. The results indicated that the tucumã fruit has high nutritional value as a source of lipids, fibers, calories, vitamin C, minerals, and unsaturated fatty acids, and high antioxidant activity. Therefore, consuming the tucumã fruit pulp may help prevent nutritional deficiencies and chronic non-communicable diseases

Fithteen (15) New Zeland and Californian rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were submitted to intoxication with carbon tethracloride in a dose 0/0.5 ml/kg, once a day, administred by orogastric sonde. Enzimatic parameters: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltransferase of those rabbits were tested before and during the experiment. After the intoxication, the rabbits were divided in three groups of five animals. Each group received differents treatments during 13 days. The animals in group I were treated with carbon tetrachloride 30 CH, once a day. The animals in group II were treated with Phosphorus 30 CH also once a day. The rabbits in group III served as a control receiving the same quantity of placebo with the same protocol of lhe others. The blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture every 4 days. The seric concentrations of ALT, AST, GGT and FA were submited to estatistic avaliation. The variation of all enzimes tested was significant between the days, but not always between the groups. This study demonstrated thaf carbon tetrachloride 30 CH was efficient in acelerating the recuperation of normal levels of ALT, but the terapy with Phosphorus 30 CH was insufficient for reverting the hepatic intoxication

Eleven healthy dogs, ranging from one to five years old, were used for this study. Base line values were determined through five daily samples of urine for urinalysis and urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activity, and blood for serum dosage of BUN and creatinine. Nephrotoxicity was induced using 10mg/kg of gentamicin, 3 times a day (tid), for 14 days. Urine samples were drawn every 24 hours and blood samples every 48 hours, for 14 days. After this period, the dogs were euthanized and necropsy was done for further histopathologic study. The clinical signs shown by the dogs were lethargy, anorexy, polyuria, oliguria, anuria, polydypsia, vomiting and diarrhea. Urinalysis findings were proteinuria, glucosuria, hematuria, cilindruria, celluria and decrease of urinary specific gravity and crescent values of urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase from 24 hours after gentamicin administration until the "end of" the experiment. Azotemia was noticed on the 12th and 14th days of the study. Acute tubular nephrosis was established in the histological evaluation. Based on the results found on this study, the measurement of the urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activity might be considered a sensitive indicator of renal tubular damage allowing early diagnosis of the lesion
