Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Review
This chapter shows that the Republic of Korea has experienced significant change in both trade and foreign direct Investment (FDI) flows since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The analysis indicates that a rapid increase in exports at the onset of the crisis helped to improve foreign reserves of the Republic of Korea and also helped the economy to recover from severe recession. Despite the crisis, the importance of the Chinese market has steadily increased to the point where it is the most important export market for the Republic of Korea, largely at the expense of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market. The crisis also had a significant impact on FDI inflows, both in terms of source country and host industry. FDI increased sharply following the crisis, and this rapid increase was largely due to higher United States and European Union investment in the service sector, which is consistent with the wealth effect hypothesis on FDI flows. Meanwhile, Japanese FDI decreased, resulting in a decline in FDI in the manufacturing sector. However, the expected spillover effects of FDI are debatable, due to largely to a shape increase in mergers and acquisitions, and FDI dried up in technology-intensive manufacturing industry. In contrast, the Republic of Korea's outward direct investment seemed to be little influenced by the financial crisis, although a further study of the implications of the crisis for the Republic of Korea's outward direct investment in developing countries, including the traditionally popular Asian region, also needs to be investigated further.Korea, FDI, ODI, export, Asian financial crisis, 1997
A practical approach for the design of nonuniform lapped transforms
We propose a simple method for the design of lapped transforms with nonuniform frequency resolution and good time localization. The method is a generalization of an approach previously proposed by Princen, where the nonuniform filter bank is obtained by joining uniform cosine-modulated filter banks (CMFBs) using a transition filter. We use several transition filters to obtain a near perfect-reconstruction (PR) nonuniform lapped transform with significantly reduced overall distortion. The main advantage of the proposed method is in reducing the length of the transition filters, which leads to a reduction in processing delay that can be useful for applications such as real-time audio coding
Coding overcomplete representations of audio using the MCLT
We propose a system for audio coding using the modulated complex
lapped transform (MCLT). In general, it is difficult to encode signals using
overcomplete representations without avoiding a penalty in rate-distortion
performance. We show that the penalty can be significantly reduced for
MCLT-based representations, without the need for iterative methods of
sparsity reduction. We achieve that via a magnitude-phase polar quantization
and the use of magnitude and phase prediction. Compared to systems based
on quantization of orthogonal representations such as the modulated lapped
transform (MLT), the new system allows for reduced warbling artifacts and
more precise computation of frequency-domain auditory masking functions

Spatial model of convective solute transport in brain extracellular space does not support a "glymphatic" mechanism.
A "glymphatic system," which involves convective fluid transport from para-arterial to paravenous cerebrospinal fluid through brain extracellular space (ECS), has been proposed to account for solute clearance in brain, and aquaporin-4 water channels in astrocyte endfeet may have a role in this process. Here, we investigate the major predictions of the glymphatic mechanism by modeling diffusive and convective transport in brain ECS and by solving the Navier-Stokes and convection-diffusion equations, using realistic ECS geometry for short-range transport between para-arterial and paravenous spaces. Major model parameters include para-arterial and paravenous pressures, ECS volume fraction, solute diffusion coefficient, and astrocyte foot-process water permeability. The model predicts solute accumulation and clearance from the ECS after a step change in solute concentration in para-arterial fluid. The principal and robust conclusions of the model are as follows: (a) significant convective transport requires a sustained pressure difference of several mmHg between the para-arterial and paravenous fluid and is not affected by pulsatile pressure fluctuations; (b) astrocyte endfoot water permeability does not substantially alter the rate of convective transport in ECS as the resistance to flow across endfeet is far greater than in the gaps surrounding them; and (c) diffusion (without convection) in the ECS is adequate to account for experimental transport studies in brain parenchyma. Therefore, our modeling results do not support a physiologically important role for local parenchymal convective flow in solute transport through brain ECS
Trade and foreign direct investment patterns in the Republic of Korea in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis
This paper analyses the impacts of the 1997 financial crisis on global multinational enterprises' (MNEs) investment behaviours towards Korea applying the system estimation methodology. Quantitative Kinetic Energy Estimated from Disdrometer Signal
The kinetic energy of the rain drops was predicted in a relation between the rain rate and rain quantity, derived directly from the rain drop size distribution (DSD), which had been measured by a disdrometer located in the eastern state of Alagoas-Brazil. The equation in the form of exponential form suppressed the effects of large drops at low rainfall intensity observed at the beginning and end of the rainfall. The kinetic energy of the raindrop was underestimated in almost rain intensity ranges and was considered acceptable by the performance indicators such as coefficient of determination, average absolute error, percent relative error, mean absolute error, root mean square error, Willmott's concordance index and confidence index

Transport coefficients from the Boson Uehling-Uhlenbeck Equation
We derive microscopic expressions for the bulk viscosity, shear viscosity and
thermal conductivity of a quantum degenerate Bose gas above , the critical
temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation. The gas interacts via a contact
potential and is described by the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation. To derive the
transport coefficients, we use Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory rather
than the Chapman-Enskog approach. This approach illuminates the link between
transport coefficients and eigenvalues of the collision operator. We find that
a method of summing the second order contributions using the fact that the
relaxation rates have a known limit improves the accuracy of the computations.
We numerically compute the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity for any
boson gas that interacts via a contact potential. We find that the bulk
