    A family of pseudo-Anosov braids with large conjugacy invariant sets

    We show that there is a family of pseudo-Anosov braids independently parameterized by the braid index and the (canonical) length whose smallest conjugacy invariant sets grow exponentially in the braid index and linearly in the length and conclude that the conjugacy problem remains exponential in the braid index under the current knowledge.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Effective Route Maintenance and Restoration Schemes in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    This study proposes a location-based hybrid routing protocol to improve data packet delivery and to reduce control message overhead in mobile ad hoc networks. In mobile environments, where nodes move continuously at a high speed, it is generally difficult to maintain and restore route paths. Therefore, this study suggests a new flooding mechanism to control route paths. The essence of the proposed scheme is its effective tracking of the destination’s location based on the beacon messages of the main route nodes. Through experiments based on an NS-2 simulator, the proposed scheme shows improvements in the data packet delivery ratio and reduces the amount of routing control message overhead compared with existing routing protocols such as AODV, LAR, ZRP and AODV-DFR

    A comparison of the clinical outcomes of patients with invasive lobular carcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast according to molecular subtype in a Korean population

    BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and the survival outcomes of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) patients compared to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) patients according to their molecular subtype. METHODS: We compared the clinicopathological characteristics, breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) between patients with IDC (n = 14,547) and ILC (n = 528). RESULTS: The ILC presented with a larger tumor size, more advanced cancer stage, increased rate of hormonal receptor positivity, human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) negativity and mastectomy than the IDC. The ILC patients more frequently presented with the luminal A subtype, whereas the IDC patients more frequently presented with the luminal B, HER2-overexpression, or triple negative subtype. The BCSS and OS were not significantly different between the IDC and ILC for each molecular subtype. CONCLUSIONS: Similar to IDC patients, molecular subtype should be considered when determining the prognosis and treatment regimen for ILC patients

    Optical Probing of Electronic Interaction between Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride

    Even weak van der Waals (vdW) adhesion between two-dimensional solids may perturb their various materials properties owing to their low dimensionality. Although the electronic structure of graphene has been predicted to be modified by the vdW interaction with other materials, its optical characterization has not been successful. In this report, we demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy can be utilized to detect a few % decrease in the Fermi velocity (vF) of graphene caused by the vdW interaction with underlying hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Our study also establishes Raman spectroscopic analysis which enables separation of the effects by the vdW interaction from those by mechanical strain or extra charge carriers. The analysis reveals that spectral features of graphene on hBN are mainly affected by change in vF and mechanical strain, but not by charge doping unlike graphene supported on SiO2 substrates. Graphene on hBN was also found to be less susceptible to thermally induced hole doping.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure

    Differential regulation of ca2+-activated cl− channel tmem16a splice variants by membrane pi(4,5)p2

    TMEM16A is a Ca2+-activated Cl− channel that controls broad cellular processes ranging from mucus secretion to signal transduction and neuronal excitability. Recent studies have reported that membrane phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2 ) is an important cofactor that allosterically regulates TMEM16A channel activity. However, the detailed regulatory actions of PIP2 in splice variants of TMEM16A remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the attenuation of membrane phosphoinositide levels selectively inhibited the current amplitude of the TMEM16A(ac) isoform by decreasing the slow, but not instantaneous, Cl− currents, which are independent of the membrane potential and specific to PI(4,5)P2 depletion. The attenuation of endogenous PI(4,5)P2 levels by the activation of Danio rerio voltage-sensitive phosphatase (Dr-VSP) decreased the Cl− currents of TMEM16A(ac) but not the TMEM16A(a) isoform, which was abolished by the co-expression of PIP 5-kinase type-1γ (PIPKIγ). Using the rapamycin-inducible dimerization of exogenous phosphoinositide phosphatases, we further revealed that the stimulatory effects of phosphoinositide on TMEM16A(ac) channels were similar in various membrane potentials and specific to PI(4,5)P2, not PI4P and PI(3,4,5)P3 . Finally, we also confirmed that PI(4,5)P2 resynthesis is essential for TMEM16A(ac) recovery from Dr-VSP-induced current inhibition. Our data demonstrate that membrane PI(4,5)P2 selectively modulates the gating of the TMEM16A(ac) channel in an agonistic manner, which leads to the upregulation of TMEM16A(ac) functions in physiological conditions. © 2021 by the authors.     An Efficient Building Evacuation Algorithm in Congested Networks

    This paper proposes a new network model for the building evacuation problem considering congestion levels and provides a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model and an efficient heuristic algorithm solving the problem. Constructing an optimization model with several congestion levels, we introduce a new network called the multi-class time-expanded (MCTE) network having several exclusive arcs connecting the same tail and head nodes. The MCTE networks make both the MILP model and the heuristic algorithm reflect a realistic situation in congested networks. Considering MCTE networks makes the problem difficult to solve, which motivates us to develop an efficient heuristic algorithm. We test our heuristic algorithm using several real-world networks such as a multiplex cinema, a subway station, and a large-size complex shopping mall in addition to an artificial network for clear comparison between the proposed algorithm and the MILP approaches. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm runs fast and produces a near-optimal solution compared with those from MILP models with a commercial solver.11Ysciescopu
