    Geology of drill hole UE25p#1; a test hole into pre-Tertiary rocks near Yucca Mountain, southern Nevada

    Yucca Mountain in southern Nye County, Nevada, has been proposed as a potential site for the underground disposal of high-level nuclear waste. An exploratory drill hole designated UE25p#1 was drilled 3 km east of the proposed repository site to investigate the geology and hydrology of the rocks that underlie the Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rock sequence forming Yucca Mountain. Silurian dolomite assigned to the Roberts Mountain and Lone Mountain Formations was intersected below the Tertiary section between a depth of approximately 1244 m (4080 ft) and the bottom of the drill hole at 1807 m (5923 ft). These formations are part of an important regional carbonate aquifer in the deep ground-water system. Tertiary units deeper than 1139 m (3733 ft) in drill hole UE25p#1 are stratigraphically older than any units previously penetrated by drill holes at Yucca Mountain. These units are, in ascending order, the tuff of Yucca Flat(?), an unnamed calcified ash-flow tuff, and a sequence of clastic deposits. The upper part of the Tertiary sequence in drill hole UE25p#1 is similar to that found in other drill holes at Yucca Mountain. The Tertiary sequence is in fault contact with the Silurian rocks. This fault between Tertiary and Paleozoic rocks may correlate with the Fran Ridge fault, a steeply westward-dipping fault exposed approximately 0.5 km east of the drill hole. Another fault intersects UE25p#1 at 873 m (2863 ft), but its surface trace is concealed beneath the valley west of the Fran Ridge fault. The Paintbrush Canyon fault, the trace of which passes less than 100 m (330 ft) east of the drilling site, intersects drill hole UE25p#1 at a depth of approximately 78 m (255 ft). The drill hole apparently intersected the west flank of a structural high of pre-Tertiary rocks, near the eastern edge of the Crater Flat structural depression

Following an overview of the concept of female orgasm, research on the prevalence and associated features of FOD is briefly reviewed. Specific aspects of the DSM-IV-TR criteria for FOD are critically reviewed and key issues that should be considered for DSM-V are discussed. The DSM-IV-TR text on FOD focused on the physiological changes that may (or may not) accompany orgasm in women; one of the major recommendations here is that greater emphasis be given to the subjective aspects of the experience of orgasm. Additional specific recommendations are made for revision of diagnostic criteria, including the use of minimum severity and duration criteria, and better acknowledgment of the crucial role of relationship factors in FOD

    Frequency of de novo variants and parental mosaicism in vascular Ehlers–Danlos syndrome

    International audiencePurpose: Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is a rare inherited autosomal dominant disorder caused by COL3A1 pathogenic variants. A high percentage of de novo cases has been suggested. Part of it could be due to parental mosaicism, but its frequency is unknown.Methods: This retrospective study included a large series of COL3A1-confirmed vEDS probands with family information. The frequency of de novo cases was evaluated and the distribution of the type of variants was compared according to the mode of inheritance. The COL3A1 mosaicism was studied by deep targeted next- generation sequencing (NGS) from parental blood DNA.Results: Out of 177 vEDS probands, 90 had a negative family history, suggesting a high rate (50.8%) of de novo pathogenic variants, enriched in the more severe COL3A1 variants (no null variant). Among those, both parental DNA were available in 36 cases and one parental DNA in 18 cases. NGS detected only one mosaicism from maternal blood DNA (allelic ratio 18%), which was confirmed in saliva (allelic ratio 22%).Conclusion: vEDS is characterized by a high frequency of de novo pathogenic variants. Parental mosaicism is rare (2-3%), but should be systematically searched with targeted NGS, taking into account its importance in genetic counseling

    The Transformation of Social Institutions in the North American Southeast

    Corporate institutions, which transformed in the American Southeast over some 14,000 years, include social heterarchies and hierarchies that arose within the institutional contexts of descent groups, ritual sodalities, and social houses. The strategic and tactical actions of competitive and cooperative agents contributed to differing expressions of organizational changes through a variety of forms, including feasting, feuding/warfare, inalienable goods circulation, indebtedness, monumental constructions, mortuary events, processions/rogations, strategic marriages, and additional ritual and social practices. The nexus of social institutions that evolved along these pathways served as a catalyst for social changes, including the ways through which social institutions became transformed. Such social processes inform archaeologists of the agency, organization, and practice of people who not only invented and manipulated cosmologies, ideologies, institutions, and resources to achieve varying degrees of inequality, power, and wealth, but also those who resisted the efforts of aggrandizers. The author’s arguments focus on aristocratic social actions and actors, and the practices that enabled them to gain power and wealth through exclusive and restrictive corporate institutions
