Towards Verifying Nonlinear Integer Arithmetic
We eliminate a key roadblock to efficient verification of nonlinear integer
arithmetic using CDCL SAT solvers, by showing how to construct short resolution
proofs for many properties of the most widely used multiplier circuits. Such
short proofs were conjectured not to exist. More precisely, we give n^{O(1)}
size regular resolution proofs for arbitrary degree 2 identities on array,
diagonal, and Booth multipliers and quasipolynomial- n^{O(\log n)} size proofs
for these identities on Wallace tree multipliers.Comment: Expanded and simplified with improved result
Myosin VI and optineurin are required for polarized EGFR delivery and directed migration.
The polarized trafficking of membrane proteins into the leading edge of the cell is an integral requirement for cell migration. Myosin VI and its interacting protein optineurin have previously been shown to operate in anterograde trafficking pathways, especially for the polarized delivery of cargo to the basolateral domain in epithelial cells. Here we show that in migratory cells ablation of myosin VI or optineurin inhibits the polarized delivery of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) into the leading edge and leads to profound defects in lamellipodia formation. Depletion of either myosin VI or optineurin, however, does not impair the overall ability of cells to migrate in a random migration assay, but it dramatically reduces directed migration towards a growth factor stimulus. In summary, we identified a specific role for myosin VI and optineurin in directionally persistent cell migration, which involves the polarized delivery of vesicles containing EGFR into the leading edge of the cell

Multistate product traceforward investigation to link imported romaine lettuce to a US cyclosporiasis outbreak – Nebraska, Texas, and Florida, June–August 2013
During June–August 2013, 25 US states reported 631 cyclosporiasis cases including Nebraska and Iowa where a regional investigation implicated common-source imported salad mix served in two chain restaurants. At least two common-origin growing fields were likely sources of contaminated romaine lettuce. Using producer- and distributor-provided data, we conducted a grower-specific traceforward investigation to reveal exposures of ill US residents elsewhere who reported symptom onset during 11 June–1 July 2013, the time period established in the Nebraska and Iowa investigation. Romaine lettuce shipped on 2–6 June from one of these Mexico-origin growing fields likely caused cyclosporiasis in 78 persons reporting illness onsets from 11 June to 1 July in Nebraska, Texas, and Florida. Nationwide, 97% (314/324) of persons confirmed with cyclosporiasis with symptom onset from 11 June to 1 July 2013 resided in 11 central and eastern US states receiving approximately two-thirds of romaine lettuce from this field. This grower’s production practices should be investigated to determine potential sources of contamination and to develop recommendations to prevent future illnesses
Abundances in Stars from the Red Giant Branch Tip to the Near Main Sequence in M71: II. Iron Abundance
We present [Ffe/H] abundance results that involve a sample of stars with a
wide range in luminosity from luminous giants to stars near the turnoff in a
globular cluster. Our sample of 25 stars in M71 includes 10 giant stars more
luminous than the RHB, 3 horizontal branch stars, 9 giant stars less luminous
than the RHB, and 3 stars near the turnoff. We analyzed both Fe I and Fe II
lines in high dispersion spectra observed with HIRES at the W. M. Keck
Observatory. We find that the [Fe/H] abundances from both Fe I and Fe II lines
agree with each other and with earlier determinations. Also the [Fe/H] obtained
from Fe I and Fe II lines is constant within the rather small uncertainties for
this group of stars over the full range in Teff and luminosity, suggesting that
NLTE effects are negligible in our iron abundance determination. In this
globular cluster, there is no difference among the mean [Fe/H] of giant stars
located at or above the RHB, RHB stars, giant stars located below the RHB and
stars near the turnoff.Comment: Minor changes to conform to version accepted for publication, with

Early psychosocial intervention in Alzheimer’s disease:Cost utility evaluation alongside the Danish Alzheimer’s Intervention Study (DAISY)
OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost utility of early psychosocial intervention for patients with Alzheimer's disease and their primary caregivers. DESIGN: Cost utility evaluation alongside a multicentre, randomised controlled trial with 3 years of follow-up. SETTING: Primary care and memory clinics in five Danish districts. PARTICIPANTS: 330 community-dwelling patients and their primary caregivers. INTERVENTION: Psychosocial counselling and support lasting 8–12 months after diagnosis and follow-up at 3, 6, 12 and 36 months in the intervention group or follow-up only in the control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was the cost of additional quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Costs were measured from a societal perspective, including the costs of healthcare, social care, informal care and production loss. QALYs were estimated separately for the patient and the caregiver before aggregation for the main analysis. RESULTS: None of the observed cost and QALY measures were significantly different between the intervention and control groups, although a tendency was noted for psychosocial care leading to cost increases with informal care that was not outweighed by the tendency for cost savings with formal care. The probability of psychosocial intervention being cost-effective did not exceed 36% for any threshold value. The alternative scenario analysis showed that the probability of cost-effectiveness increased over the range of threshold values used if the cost perspective was restricted to formal healthcare. CONCLUSIONS: A multifaceted, psychosocial intervention programme was found unlikely to be cost-effective from a societal perspective. The recommendation for practice in settings that are similar to the Danish setting is to provide follow-up with referral to available local support programmes when needed, and to restrict large multifaceted intervention programmes to patients and caregivers with special needs until further evidence for cost-effectiveness emerges. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered in the Clinical Trial Database as ISRCTN74848736
