Mechanisms underlying the regulation of Nedd4-family E3 Ubiquitin ligases
Nedd4-family enzymes play key roles in the establishment and regulation of both developmental and carcinogenic processes. Hence, profound studies of the catalytic mechanisms and detailed analysis of protein-specific regulation of these enzymes as presented in this thesis, contribute significantly to the understanding of HECT ligases but also may have implications for the development of pharmaceutical inhibitors
Unusual Ground State Properties of the Kondo-Lattice Compound Yb2Ir3Ge5
We report sample preparation, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetic
susceptibility and heat capacity studies of a new compound YbIrGe.
We find that this compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with a
space group PMMN unlike the compound CeIrGe which crystallizes in
the tetragonal IBAM (UCoSi type) structure. Our resistivity
measurements indicate that the compound YbIrGe behaves like a
typical Kondo lattice system with no ordering down to 0.4 K. However, a
Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse magnetic susceptibility above 100 K gives an
effective moment of only 3.66 which is considerably less than the
theoretical value of 4.54 for magnetic Yb ions. The value of
= -15.19 K is also considerably higher indicating the presence of
strong hybridization. An upturn in the low temperature heat capacity gives an
indication that the system may order magnetically just below the lowest
temperature of our heat capacity measurements (0.4 K). The structure contains
two sites for Yb ions and the present investigation suggests that Yb may be
trivalent in one site while it may be significantly lower (close to divalent)
in the other.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. submitted to Phys. Rev.
New Records of Leptothorax Wilsoni From Western North America
The parasitic ant Leptothorax wilsoni Heinze, 1989 was recorded
from New Hampshire, Quebec, and New Brunswick. We report on
colonies found in two sites in Jasper National Park, Alberta and in
one site south of Glacier National Park, Montana. The host species
in the west is apparently the same as in the eastern area. Brachypterous
intermorphic and fully alate gynomorphic females were
found together in two colonies, confirming that L. wilsoni is a
species with queen polymorphism. L. wilsoni workers and host
species queens lacked in all colonies, as in the samples from eastern
North America
This article studies the influence that the Pseudo-Turpin may have had on Konrad’s Rolandslied and on the Karlmeinet. Contrary to what has sometimes been suggested, the first of the two poems offers only rare similarities to the Latin Chronicle. On the other hand, the third part of Karlmeinet adapts Turpin’s text rather faithfully, insisting less on the ideology of holy war, than on the image of Charlemagne in his role as a German ruler, to assist in German claims against French pretentions on ruling the Empire
