Widespread evidence for heterogeneous accretion of the terrestrial planets and planetisimals
The abundance and relative proportion of highly siderophile elements (HSEs) in Earth’s mantle deviate from those predicted by low-pressure equilibrium partitioning between metal and silicate during formation of the core. For many elements, high-pressure equilibration in a deep molten silicate layer (or ‘magma ocean’) may account for this discrepancy [1], but some highly siderophile element abundances demand the late addition, a ‘late veneer’, of extraterrestrial material (i.e. heterogeneous accretion) after core formation was complete [2]. Siderophile elements in smaller asteroidal bodies will not be affected by high-pressure metal-silicate equilibration and so, with highly efficient core formation [3] and if a ‘late veneer’ is absent, significant differences in the proportions of HSEs can be anticipated. Here we present new HSE abundance and 187Os/188Os isotope data for basaltic meteorites, the HEDs (howardites, eucrites and diogenites thought to sample the asteroid 4 Vesta), anomalous eucrites (considered to be from distinct Vesta-like parent bodies) angrites and aubrites (from unidentified parent bodies) and SNCs (thought to be from Mars). Our data, taken with those for lunar rocks [4], demonstrate that these igneous meteorites all formed from mantle sources that possessed chondritic (i.e. primitive solar system) elemental and isotope compositions, indicating that late accretion is not unique to Earth, but is a common feature of differentiated planets and asteroidal bodies. Variations in the total HSE abundance suggest that the proportion of ‘late veneer’ added is a simple consequence of the size of each body (cross-section and/or gravitational-attraction), and may account for the volatile element budget, and the oxidationstate of Earth, Mars, the Moon and Vesta
Recruiting hard-to-reach populations to physical activity studies : evidence and experiences
Most researchers who are conducting research with a public health focus face difficulties in recruiting the segments of the population that they really want to reach. This symposium presented evidence and experiences on recruiting participants to physical activity research, including both epidemiological and intervention based studies. Results from a systematic review of recruitment strategies suggested that we know little about how best to recruit and highlighted the need for researchers to report this in more detail, including metrics of reach into the target population such as number, proportion, and representativeness of participants. Specific strategies used to optimise responses to a population-based mail survey were presented such as study promotion, survey design, multiple mailings, and personal engagement. Finally, using place based recruiting via schools or places of worship to target ethnic minority youth were discussed. Overall the symposium presenters suggested that we need to learn more about how best to recruit participants, in particular those typically under-represented, and that researchers need to apportion a similar amount of planning effort to their recruitment strategies as they do the their research design. Finally we made a plea for researchers to report their recruitment processes in detail
3D MHD Modeling of the Gaseous Structure of the Galaxy: Synthetic Observations
We generated synthetic observations from the four-arm model presented in
Gomez & Cox (2004) for the Galactic ISM in the presence of a spiral
gravitational perturbation. We found that velocity crowding and diffusion have
a strong effect in the l-v diagram. The v-b diagram presents structures at the
expected spiral arm velocities, that can be explained by the off-the-plane
structure of the arms presented in previous papers of this series. Such
structures are observed in the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI survey. The rotation curve,
as measured from the inside of the modeled galaxy, shows similarities with the
observed one for the Milky Way Galaxy, although it has large deviations from
the smooth circular rotation corresponding to the background potential. The
magnetic field inferred from a synthetic synchrotron map shows a largely
circular structure, but with interesting deviations in the midplane due to
distortion of the field from circularity in the interarm regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Better quality figures in

Giant Molecular Clouds are More Concentrated to Spiral Arms than Smaller Clouds
From our catalog of Milky Way molecular clouds, created using a temperature
thresholding algorithm on the Bell Laboratories 13CO Survey, we have extracted
two subsets:(1) Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), clouds that are definitely
larger than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are at their `near distance', and
(2) clouds that are definitely smaller than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are
at their `far distance'. The positions and velocities of these clouds are
compared to the loci of spiral arms in (l, v) space. The velocity separation of
each cloud from the nearest spiral arm is introduced as a `concentration
statistic'. Almost all of the GMCs are found near spiral arms. The density of
smaller clouds is enhanced near spiral arms, but some clouds (~10%) are
unassociated with any spiral arm. The median velocity separation between a GMC
and the nearest spiral arm is 3.4+-0.6 km/s, whereas the median separation
between smaller clouds and the nearest spiral arm is 5.5+-0.2 km/s.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
The Development of Forage Nutrient Value Coefficients for Use in CARD\u27s 1985 RCA Model
After preliminary work on the livestock sector for the 1985 CARD/RCA model was completed in the summer of 1983, it was felt that one of the weaker areas in the sector was the linkage between the livestock sector and the range sector. At that time it was decided that the best way to approach this problem would be through the development of feed transfer activities.
The purpose of this paper is to present a brief overview of the development of the nutrient value coefficients for net energy, protein, calcium, and phosphorus supplied by grazed forages in the 31 market regions. The data developed in this paper serves as coefficients for feed transfer activities in the livestock sector of the CARD/RCA model
Research Notes: Selecting homozygous male fertile lines from an intermating soybean population
The synthesis of random-mating soybean populations and their use in recurrent selection programs was enhanced by the discovery of the male sterile genotype, ms 1 ms 1 (Brim and Young, 1971; Brim and Stuber, 1973). At some point in such a recurrent selection program, a plant breeder usually wishes to select lines for testing from one or more of the improved populations . There is a difficulty in this, however, because the progeny of every fertile plant selected from a random mating population will segregate for male sterility
A Large Mass of H2 in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Zwicky 3146
We present the Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectrum of the infrared-luminous
(L_{IR}=4e11 L_sun) brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the X-ray-luminous
cluster Z3146 (z=0.29). The spectrum shows strong aromatic emission features,
indicating that the dominant source of the infrared luminosity is star
formation. The most striking feature of the spectrum, however, is the
exceptionally strong molecular hydrogen (H2) emission lines, which seem to be
shock-excited. The line luminosities and inferred warm H2 gas mass (~1e10
M_sun) are 6 times larger than those of NGC 6240, the most H2-luminous galaxy
at z <~ 0.1. Together with the large amount of cold H2 detected previously
(~1e11 M_sun), this indicates that the Z3146 BCG contains disproportionately
large amounts of both warm and cold H2 gas for its infrared luminosity, which
may be related to the intracluster gas cooling process in the cluster core.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in ApJ

Anisotropic dynamics of a vicinal surface under the meandering step instability
We investigate the nonlinear evolution of the Bales-Zangwill instability,
responsible for the meandering of atomic steps on a growing vicinal surface. We
develop an asymptotic method to derive, in the continuous limit, an evolution
equation for the two-dimensional step flow. The dynamics of the crystal surface
is greatly influenced by the anisotropy inherent to its geometry, and is
characterized by the coarsening of undulations along the step direction and by
the elastic relaxation in the mean slope direction. We demonstrate, using
similarity arguments, that the coalescence of meanders and the step flow follow
simple scaling laws, and deduce the exponents of the characteristic length
scales and height amplitude. The relevance of these results to experiments is
