QUANTIFYING IMPACTS DURING BEAM AND FLOOR TRAINING IN PREADOLESCENT GIRLS FROM TWO STREAMS OF ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
The primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of participation level (international and national), apparatus (beam and floor) and training phase (precompetition and competition) on estimates of training load in a convenient sample of gymnasts aged 7 to 13 years. Video analysis of training sessions along with accelerometer and force platform (500 Hz) peak ground reaction force data were used to
establish differences between key gymnastic-specific and non-gymnastic-specific variables. International level gymnasts demonstrated higher incidence in hours of training, number of observed impacts, markers of the quality of periodised training program and lower relative injury rates. Marked differences were also observed between the two training phases. The demand for injury prevention strategies may be higher at the national level of gymnastics training

Patients hospitalized with acute heart failure, worsening renal function, and persistent congestion are at high risk for adverse outcomes despite current medical therapy
INTRODUCTION: Approximately 1/3 of patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) are discharged with persistent congestion. Worsening renal function (WRF) occurs in approximately 50% of patients hospitalized for ADHF and the combination of WRF and persistent congestion are associated with higher risk of mortality and HF readmissions.
METHODS: We designed a multicenter, prospective registry to describe current treatments and outcomes for patients hospitalized with ADHF complicated by WRF (defined as a creatinine increase ≥0.3 mg/dL) and persistent congestion at 96 h. Study participants were followed during the hospitalization and through 90-day post-discharge. Hospitalization costs were analyzed in an economic substudy.
RESULTS: We enrolled 237 patients hospitalized with ADHF, who also had WRF and persistent congestion. Among these, the average age was 66 ± 13 years and 61% had a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 40%. Mean baseline creatinine was 1.7 ± 0.7 mg/dL. Patients with persistent congestion had a high burden of clinical events during the index hospitalization (7.6% intensive care unit transfer, 2.1% intubation, 1.7% left ventricular assist device implantation, and 0.8% dialysis). At 90-day follow-up, 33% of patients were readmitted for ADHF or died. Outcomes and costs were similar between patients with reduced and preserved LVEF.
CONCLUSIONS: Many patients admitted with ADHF have WRF and persistent congestion despite diuresis and are at high risk for adverse events during hospitalization and early follow-up. Novel treatment strategies are urgently needed for this high-risk population
A genetically informed cross-lagged analysis of autistic-like traits and affective problems in early childhood
A genetically informed cross-lagged model was applied to twin data to explore etiological links between autistic-like traits and affective problems in early childhood. The sample comprised 310 same-sex twin pairs (143 monozygotic and 167 dizygotic; 53% male). Autistic-like traits and affective problems were assessed at ages 2 and 3 using parent ratings. Both constructs were related within and across age (r = .30-.53) and showed moderate stability (r = .45-.54). Autistic-like traits and affective problems showed genetic and environmental influences at both ages. Whereas at age 2, the covariance between autistic-like traits and affective problems was entirely due to environmental influences (shared and nonshared), at age 3, genetic factors also contributed to the covariance between constructs. The stability paths, but not the cross-lagged paths, were significant, indicating that there is stability in both autistic-like traits and affective problems but they do not mutually influence each other across age. Stability effects were due to genetic, shared, and nonshared environmental influences. Substantial novel genetic and nonshared environmental influences emerge at age 3 and suggest change in the etiology of these constructs over time. During early childhood, autistic-like traits tend to occur alongside affective problems and partly overlapping genetic and environmental influences explain this association
Impact of the 2014–2016 marine heatwave on US and Canada West Coast fisheries: Surprises and lessons from key case studies
Marine heatwaves are increasingly affecting marine ecosystems, with cascading impacts on coastal economies, communities, and food systems. Studies of heatwaves
provide crucial insights into potential ecosystem shifts under future climate change
and put fisheries social-ecological systems through “stress tests” that expose both vulnerabilities and resilience. The 2014–16 Northeast Pacific heatwave was the strongest
and longest marine heatwave on record and resulted in profound ecological changes
that impacted fisheries, fisheries management, and human livelihoods. Here, we synthesize the impacts of the 2014–2016 marine heatwave on US and Canada West Coast
fisheries and extract key lessons for preparing global fisheries science, management,
and industries for the future. We set the stage with a brief review of the impacts of
the heatwave on marine ecosystems and the first systematic analysis of the economic impacts of these changes on commercial and recreational fisheries. We then examine
ten key case studies that provide instructive examples of the complex and surprising
challenges that heatwaves pose to fisheries social-ecological systems. These reveal
important insights into improving the resilience of monitoring and management and
increasing adaptive capacity to future stressors. Key recommendations include: (1)
expanding monitoring to enhance mechanistic understanding, provide early warning
signals, and improve predictions of impacts; (2) increasing the flexibility, adaptiveness,
and inclusiveness of management where possible; (3) using simulation testing to help
guide management decisions; and (4) enhancing the adaptive capacity of fishing communities by promoting engagement, flexibility, experimentation, and failsafes. These
advancements are important as global fisheries prepare for a changing oceanWe are grateful to Nate Mantua, Manuel Hidalgo, Kiva Oken, and

Physical Parameters of the Multiplanet Systems HD 106315 and GJ 9827
HD 106315 and GJ 9827 are two bright, nearby stars that host multiple super-Earths and sub-Neptunes discovered by K2 that are well suited for atmospheric characterization. We refined the planets' ephemerides through Spitzer transits, enabling accurate transit prediction required for future atmospheric characterization through transmission spectroscopy. Through a multiyear high-cadence observing campaign with Keck/High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer and Magellan/Planet Finder Spectrograph, we improved the planets' mass measurements in anticipation of Hubble Space Telescope transmission spectroscopy. For GJ 9827, we modeled activity-induced radial velocity signals with a Gaussian process informed by the Calcium II H&K lines in order to more accurately model the effect of stellar noise on our data. We measured planet masses of M_b = 4.87 ± 0.37 M_⊕, M_c = 1.92 ± 0.49 M_⊕, and M_d = 3.42 ± 0.62 M_⊕. For HD 106315, we found that such activity radial velocity decorrelation was not effective due to the reduced presence of spots and speculate that this may extend to other hot stars as well (T_(eff) > 6200 K). We measured planet masses of M_b = 10.5 ± 3.1 M_⊕ and M_c = 12.0 ± 3.8 M_⊕. We investigated all of the planets' compositions through comparison of their masses and radii to a range of interior models. GJ 9827 b and GJ 9827 c are both consistent with a 50/50 rock-iron composition, GJ 9827 d and HD 106315 b both require additional volatiles and are consistent with moderate amounts of water or hydrogen/helium, and HD 106315 c is consistent with a ~10% hydrogen/helium envelope surrounding an Earth-like rock and iron core
