    Potential For On-Site, Prosecutorial Evidence From Drug Residues Collected On Plasmonic Paper: A Pilot Study For Sers-Psi-Ms

    Given the potential impact of improvements to on-site drug testing, as well as recent, successful displays of paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PSI-MS) in this regard, this thesis pilots the implementation of Raman spectroscopy as a compliment to MS for field-based confirmatory drug testing. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is utilized for applications to trace detection. Two-tiered analysis of individual drug samples is enabled using triangularly-cut plasmonic papers, from which both SERS and PS-MS analysis may be performed. Several drug compounds, representative of traditional and emerging drug types, are examined by these techniques, both separately and as a fully integrated, SERS-PSI-MS testing platform. The unique benefits offered by Raman/SERS are demonstrated via discrimination of isomers that are indistinguishable by MS. Optimization of the coupled, analytical platform culminate in a standard operating procedure, which is implemented in an error-rate study (N = 500) performed for sub-microgram quantities of drugs deposited on plasmonic papers

    Hydrogen solubility in zirconium intermetallic second phase particles

    The enthalpies of solution of H in Zr binary intermetallic compounds formed with Cu, Cr, Fe, Mo, Ni, Nb, Sn and V were calculated by means of density functional theory simulations and compared to that of H in {\alpha}-Zr. It is predicted that all Zr-rich phases (formed with Cu, Fe, Ni and Sn), and those phases formed with Nb and V, offer lower energy, more stable sites for H than {\alpha}-Zr. Conversely, Mo and Cr containing phases do not provide preferential solution sites for H. In all cases the most stable site for H are those that offer the highest coordination fraction of Zr atoms. Often these are four Zr tetrahedra but not always. Implications with respect to H-trapping properties of commonly observed ternary phases such as Zr(Cr,Fe)2, Zr2(Fe,Ni) and Zr(Nb,Fe)2 are also discussed.Comment: manuscript accepted for publication in Journal of Nuclear Materials (2013

    Development and Performance Evaluation of a Real-Time Web Search Engine

    As the World Wide Web continues to grow, the tools to retrieve the information must develop in terms of locating web pages, categorizing content, and retrieving quality pages. Web search engines have enhanced the online experience by making pages easier to find. Search engines have made a science of cataloging page content, but the data can age, becoming outdated and irrelevant. By searching pages in real time in a localized area of the web, information that is retrieved is guaranteed to be available at the time of the search. The real-time search engines intriguing premise provides an overwhelming challenge. Since the web is searched in real time, the engine\u27s execution will take longer than traditional search engines. The challenge is to determine what factors can enhance the performance of the real-time search engine. This research takes a look at three components: traversal methodologies for searching the web, utilizing concurrently executing spiders, and implementing a caching resource to reduce the execution time of the real-time search engine. These components represent some basic methodologies to improve performance. By determining which implementations provide the best response, a better and faster real-time search engine can become a useful searching tool for Internet users
