    Extending snBench to Support a Video-Based Intrusion Detection and Alerting System with a Centralized Hash Table

    In this project we design and implement a centralized hashing table in the snBench sensor network environment. We discuss the feasibility of this approach and compare and contrast with the distributed hashing architecture, with particular discussion regarding the conditions under which a centralized architecture makes sense. There are numerous computational tasks that require persistence of data in a sensor network environment. To help motivate the need for data storage in snBench we demonstrate a practical application of the technology whereby a video camera can monitor a room to detect the presence of a person and send an alert to the appropriate authorities

    Glycolaldehyde, methyl formate and acetic acid adsorption and thermal desorption from interstellar ices

    We have undertaken a detailed investigation of the adsorption, desorption and thermal processing of the astrobiologically significant isomers glycolaldehyde, acetic acid and methyl formate. Here, we present the results of laboratory infrared and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) studies of the three isomers from model interstellar ices adsorbed on a carbonaceous dust grain analogue surface. Laboratory infrared data show that the isomers can be clearly distinguished on the basis of their infrared spectra, which has implications for observations of interstellar ice spectra. Laboratory TPD data also show that the three isomers can be distinguished on the basis of their thermal desorption behaviour. In particular, TPD data show that the isomers cannot be treated the same way in astrophysical models of desorption. The desorption of glycolaldehyde and acetic acid from water-dominated ices is very similar, with desorption being mainly dictated by water ice. However, methyl formate also desorbs from the surface of the ice, as a pure desorption feature, and therefore desorbs at a lower temperature than the other two isomers. This is more clearly indicated by models of the desorption on astrophysical time-scales corresponding to the heating rate of 25 and 5 M⊙ stars. For a 25 M⊙ star, our model shows that a proportion of the methyl formate can be found in the gas phase at earlier times compared to glycolaldehyde and acetic acid. This has implications for the observation and detection of these molecules, and potentially explains why methyl formate has been observed in a wider range of astrophysical environments than the other two isomers

    Trapping and desorption of complex organic molecules in water at 20 K

    The formation, chemical and thermal processing of complex organic molecules (COMs) is currently a topic of much interest in interstellar chemistry. The isomers glycolaldehyde, methyl formate and acetic acid are particularly important because of their role as pre-biotic species. It is becoming increasingly clear that many COMs are formed within interstellar ices which are dominated by water. Hence the interaction of these species with water ice is crucially important in dictating their behaviour. Here we present the first detailed comparative study of the adsorption and thermal processing of glycolaldehyde, methyl formate and acetic acid adsorbed on and in water ices at astrophysically relevant temperatures (20 K). We show that the functional group of the isomer dictates the strength of interaction with water ice, and hence the resulting desorption and trapping behaviour. Furthermore, the strength of this interaction directly affects the crystallization of water, which in turn affects the desorption behaviour. Our detailed coverage and composition dependent data allow us to categorize the desorption behaviour of the three isomers on the basis of the strength of intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, as well as the natural sublimation temperature of the molecule. This categorization is extended to other C, H and O containing molecules in order to predict and describe the desorption behaviour of COMs from interstellar ices

    Post-Operative Rehabilitation for Scapular Muscle Reattachment: A Case Report

    Background and Purpose: Scapular muscle detachment is a rare orthopedic problem that has been described in the literature in patients following traumatic events involving traction, direct trauma, or a motor vehicle accident. The purpose of this case report is to describe the post-operative rehabilitation following scapular muscle reattachment surgery. Unique to this case report is the patient\u27s perspective, an orthopedic physical therapist with 25 years of experience. Case Description: A 47-year-old female physical therapist experienced a traction injury to bilateral upper extremities during a medical procedure resulting in bilateral rhomboid, and bilateral lower trapezius muscles were detached from the medial scapular border. Reconstruction of the left scapulothoracic musculature occurred five and one-half years post-injury with the right repaired one year later. This case report describes the rehabilitation program that took one-year to recover for each arm with a period of protected motion for 16-weeks and gradual return to function as a manual physical therapist over a period of one-year. Outcomes: The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Standardized Assessment Form and pain-free range of motion was used pre- and postoperatively. Left and right shoulder pre-operative ASES scores were 68 and 72, respectively. At the one-year post-operative the left shoulder was rated at 82 and the right shoulder was 90. Pain-free range of motion was achieved in both arms by one year. Functional limitations requiring strength overhead were the slowest to return and were not completely back at one year following either surgery. Discussion: Rehabilitation protocols for scapular muscle reattachment surgery are not commonly available to allow physical therapists to guide their patients and structure a rehabilitation program. This case report provides a sample pre-operative set of educational guidelines and a post-operative protocol for use after scapular reattachment surgery. This case report is unique because it offers a patient perspective who is a physical therapist and underwent this surgery twice. Therefore, providing insight on how to prepare for such a unique operation. The slow recovery is due to three issues 1) the prolonged time from injury to diagnosis created significant muscle wasting and muscular imbalance of surrounding tissues, 2) once this tissue was repaired it requires months of protection to recover, 3) the involved scapulothoracic muscle have to regain adequate strength as the foundation for upper extremity functions.     Coping with COVID-19: An exploratory mixed-methods investigation of the impact of John Henryism on urban college students’ engagement in schoolwork

    The current study examined how COVID-19 impacted urban college students’ engagement in their schoolwork and whether John Henryism mediated the relationship among demographic variables and engagement. Results demonstrated that John Henryism is a significant predictor of all three engagement outcomes (absorption, dedication, and vigor) and mediated the relationship between historically underrepresented students (Black and Latinx) and their vigor for engaging in schoolwork. Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual challenges. This study adds another dimension to the coping strategies urban college students are using to stay engaged in their schoolwork during the pandemic

    A Novel, Contactless, Portable “Spot-Check” Device Accurately Measures Respiratory Rate

    Respiratory rate (RR) is an important vital sign used in the assessment of acutely ill patients. It is also used as to predict serious deterioration in a patient's clinical condition. Convenient electronic devices exist for measurement of pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature. Although devices which measure RR exist, none has entered everyday clinical practice. We developed a contactless portable respiratory rate monitor (CPRM) and evaluated the agreement in respiratory rate measurements between existing methods and our new device. The CPRM uses thermal anemometry to measure breath signals during inspiration and expiration. RR data were collected from 52 healthy adult volunteers using respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) bands (established contact method), visual counting of chest movements (established non-contact method) and the CPRM (new method), simultaneously. Two differently shaped funnel attachments were evaluated for each volunteer. Data showed good agreement between measurements from the CPRM and the gold standard RIP, with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC): 0.836, mean difference 0.46 and 95% limits of agreement of -5.90 to 6.83. When separate air inlet funnels of the CPRM were analysed, stronger agreement was seen with an elliptical air inlet; ICC 0.908, mean difference 0.37 with 95% limits of agreement -4.35 to 5.08. A contactless device for accurately and quickly measuring respiratory rate will be an important triage tool in the clinical assessment of patients. More testing is needed to explore the reasons for outlying measurements and to evaluate in the clinical setting

    This case study examines an experiment in archival practice and mentorship undertaken at the University of Oklahoma (OU) during the spring semester of 2019. The project concerned the inventory of an important privately held archive in American Indian history. The case study describes the process and documentation involved in an institution assuming temporary custody of a private collection, including legal and ethical considerations of temporary custody, and explores the mentorship relationship among group of interdisciplinary faculty and students, as well as the products, both archival and non-archival, that resulted form this collaborative effort

    How well do health professionals interpret diagnostic information? A systematic review.

    Published onlineResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tOBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether clinicians differ in how they evaluate and interpret diagnostic test information. DESIGN: Systematic review. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO from inception to September 2013; bibliographies of retrieved studies, experts and citation search of key included studies. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES: Primary studies that provided information on the accuracy of any diagnostic test (eg, sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios) to health professionals and that reported outcomes relating to their understanding of information on or implications of test accuracy. RESULTS: We included 24 studies. 6 assessed ability to define accuracy metrics: health professionals were less likely to identify the correct definition of likelihood ratios than of sensitivity and specificity. -25 studies assessed Bayesian reasoning. Most assessed the influence of a positive test result on the probability of disease: they generally found health professionals' estimation of post-test probability to be poor, with a tendency to overestimation. 3 studies found that approaches based on likelihood ratios resulted in more accurate estimates of post-test probability than approaches based on estimates of sensitivity and specificity alone, while 3 found less accurate estimates. 5 studies found that presenting natural frequencies rather than probabilities improved post-test probability estimation and speed of calculations. CONCLUSIONS: Commonly used measures of test accuracy are poorly understood by health professionals. Reporting test accuracy using natural frequencies and visual aids may facilitate improved understanding and better estimation of the post-test probability of disease.This work was partially funded by the UK Medical Research Council (Grant Code G0801405)

    Bioprinting: Uncovering the utility layer-by-layer

    Bioprinting is becoming a must have capability in tissue engineering research. Key to the growth of the field is the inherent flexibility, which can be used to answer basic scientific questions that can only be addressed under 3D culture conditions, or organ-on-chip systems that could quickly replace underperforming animal models. Almost certainly the most challenging application of bioprinting will be for bottom-up tissue construction, which faces many of the same challenges as scaffold-based tissue engineering. In this review, the current state-of-the-art approaches to 3D bioprinting are discussed in terms of performance and suitability. This is complemented by an overview of hydrogel-based bioinks, with a special emphasis on composite biomaterial systems. </jats:p
