    Vector Positronium States in QED3

    The homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved in the quenched ladder approximation for the vector positronium states of 4-component quantum electrodynamics in 2 space and 1 time dimensions. Fermion propagator input is from a Rainbow approximation Dyson-Schwinger solution, with a broad range of fermion masses considered. This work is an extension of earlier work on the scalar spectrum of the same model. The non-relativistic limit is also considered via the large fermion mass limit. Classification of states via their transformation properties under discrete parity transformations allows analogies to be drawn with the meson spectrum of QCD.Comment: 24 pages, 2 encapsulated postscript figure

    We derive the complete set of supersymmetric Ward identities involving only two- and three- point proper vertices in supersymmetric QED. We also present the most general form of the proper vertices consistent with both the supersymmetric and U(1) gauge Ward identities. These vertices are the supersymmetric equivalent of the non supersymmetric Ball-Chiu vertices.Comment: seventeen pages late

    Mass singularity and confining property in QED3QED_3

    We discuss the properties of the position space fermion propagator in three dimensional QED which has been found previouly based on Ward-Takahashi-identity for soft-photon emission vertex and spectral representation.There is a new type of mass singularity which governs the long distance behaviour.It leads the propagator vanish at large distance.This term corresponds to dynamical mass in position space.Our model shows confining property and dynamical mass generation for arbitrary coupling constant.Since we used dispersion retation in deriving spectral function there is a physical mass which sets a mass scale.For finite cut off we obtain the full propagator in the dispersion integral as a superposition of different massses.Low energy behaviour of the proagator is modified to decrease by position dependent mass.In the limit of zero infrared cut-off the propagator vanishes with a new kind of infrared behaviour.Comment: 22pages,4figures,revtex4,Notational sloppiness are crrected.Submitted to JHE

    Effective affinities in microarray data

    In the past couple of years several studies have shown that hybridization in Affymetrix DNA microarrays can be rather well understood on the basis of simple models of physical chemistry. In the majority of the cases a Langmuir isotherm was used to fit experimental data. Although there is a general consensus about this approach, some discrepancies between different studies are evident. For instance, some authors have fitted the hybridization affinities from the microarray fluorescent intensities, while others used affinities obtained from melting experiments in solution. The former approach yields fitted affinities that at first sight are only partially consistent with solution values. In this paper we show that this discrepancy exists only superficially: a sufficiently complete model provides effective affinities which are fully consistent with those fitted to experimental data. This link provides new insight on the relevant processes underlying the functioning of DNA microarrays.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Adsorption models of hybridization and post-hybridisation behaviour on oligonucleotide microarrays

    Analysis of data from an Affymetrix Latin Square spike-in experiment indicates that measured fluorescence intensities of features on an oligonucleotide microarray are related to spike-in RNA target concentrations via a hyperbolic response function, generally identified as a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore the asymptotic signal at high spike-in concentrations is almost invariably lower for a mismatch feature than for its partner perfect match feature. We survey a number of theoretical adsorption models of hybridization at the microarray surface and find that in general they are unable to explain the differing saturation responses of perfect and mismatch features. On the other hand, we find that a simple and consistent explanation can be found in a model in which equilibrium hybridization followed by partial dissociation of duplexes during the post-hybridization washing phase.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, some rearrangement of sections and some additions.     Survey of J=0,1 mesons in a Bethe-Salpeter approach

    The Bethe-Salpeter equation is used to comprehensively study mesons with J=0,1 and equal-mass constituents for quark masses from the chiral limit to the b-quark mass. The survey contains masses of the ground states in all corresponding J^{PC} channels including those with "exotic" quantum numbers. The emphasis is put on each particular state's sensitivity to the low- and intermediate-momentum, i.e., long-range part of the strong interaction.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Strong-coupling series expansions are calculated for the Hamiltonian version of compact lattice electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions, with 4-component fermions. Series are calculated for the ground-state energy per site, the chiral condensate, and the masses of `glueball' and positronium states.     Gravitational and dilaton radiation from a relativistic membrane

    Recent scenarios of the TeV-scale brane cosmology suggest a possibility of existence in the early universe of two-dimensional topological defects: relativistic membranes. Like cosmic strings, oscillating membranes could emit gravitational radiation contributing to a stochastic background of gravitational waves. We calculate dilaton and gravitational radiation from a closed toroidal membrane excited along one homology cycle. The spectral-angular distributions of dilaton and gravitational radiation are obtained in a closed form in terms of Bessel's functions. The angular distributions are affected by oscillating factors due to an interference of radiation from different segments of the membrane. The dilaton radiation power is dominated by a few lower harmonics of the basic frequency, while the spectrum of the gravitational radiation contains also a substantial contribution from higher harmonics. The radiative lifetime of the membrane is determined by its tension and depends weakly on the ratio of two radii of the torus. Qualitatively it is equal to the ratio of the membrane area at the maximal extension to the gravitational radius of the membrane as a whole.Comment: Latex error corrected (Fig.1 was called twice instead of Fig.4), minor edits.     Lower odds of remission among women with rheumatoid arthritis: A cohort study in the Swiss Clinical Quality Management cohort.

    To compare the likelihood of achieving remission between men and women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after starting their first biologic or targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (b/tsDMARD). This cohort study in the Swiss Clinical Quality Management in Rheumatic Diseases (SCQM) registry included RA patients starting their first b/tsDMARD (1997-31/04/2018). The odds of achieving remission at ≀12-months, defined by disease activity score 28-joints (DAS28) <2.6, were compared between men and women. Secondary analyses were adjusted for age and seropositivity, and we investigated potential mediators or factors that could explain the main findings. The study included 2839 (76.3%) women and 883 (23.7%) men with RA. Compared to women, men were older at diagnosis and b/tsDMARD start, but had shorter time from diagnosis to b/tsDMARD (3.4 versus 5.0 years, p<0.001), and they had lower DAS28 at b/tsDMARD start. Compared to women, men had 21% increased odds of achieving DAS28-remission, with odds ratio (OR) 1.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.42. Adjusting for age and seropositivity yielded similar findings (adjusted OR 1.24, 95%CI 1.05-1.46). Analyses of potential mediators suggested that the observed effect may be explained by the shorter disease duration and lower DAS28 at treatment initiation in men versus women. Men started b/tsDMARD earlier than women, particularly regarding disease duration and disease activity (DAS28), and had higher odds of reaching remission. This highlights the importance of early initiation of second line treatments, and suggests to target an earlier stage of disease in women to match the benefits observed in men
