Spinal muscular atrophy is a neuromuscular degenerative disorder characterized by progressive apoptosis of motor neurons, with severe weakness and bulbar dysfunction. The aim of the study was to analyze the correlations between the moment of initiation of treatment (nusinersen) and clinical evolution, and also the change of electrophysiological parameters and motor scales, fol-lowed up for 2 years. This study was carried out between 2018 and 2022 on 60 SMA children (29 girls, 31 boys), (29 type 1 and 31 type 2; 29 with 2 copies of SMN2, 29 with 3 copies, and 2 with 4 copies), aged between 3 weeks and 196 months, divided into 2 groups according type of SMA. For both types of SMA, statistically significant negative correlations were found between the elapsed interval from the onset of the disease to the initiation of treatment and upper motor acquisitions (type 1: p < 0.0001, r = -0.713, type 2: p<0.001, r = -0.560) and between age at the beginning of treatment and improvement in motor function (type 1: p <0.0001, r =-0.726, type 2: p<0.001, r=-0.553). For patients with type 2 SMA, a negative correlation was also identified between age at the time of onset and motor evolution (p<0.05, r = -0.378). Electrophysiological parameters were strongly positive correlated with motor improvement (p<0.0001, r=0.600). Our study established the necessity of early SMA diagnosis and therapy beginning, and demonstrated that Compound Motor Action Potential can be a predictive factor in the disease's progression

Proximal humerus fracture ranks third in the elderly after femoral neck fractures and distal radius fractures, and seventh in adults, and the risk of occurrence is related to advancing age. In this study we aimed to analyze the efficacy of a 24-weeks physical therapy programme based on a particular methodology consisting of the reprogramming of the specific proprioceptive neuromuscular facil-itation techniques added to the classical physical therapy and by introducing modern interactive therapies and technologies: Capacitive Resistive Electric Transference, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, kinesiological tapes and PRAMA system, compared with classical physical therapy. Our study included 26 patients, aged between 18 and 55 years, with proximal humerus fracture, who complete the 24-weeks rehabilitation programme. We assessed pain, shoulder range of motion, muscle strength and the ability to perform activities of daily living. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS and Excel 2021. The results showed statistically significant im-provement in all shoulder motion, increased muscle strength, decreased pain, and a better ability to perform daily activities. The physical therapy programme based on the proposed particular methodology has proven to be more effective than classical physical therapy, both regarding the improvement of the movement parameters compared to the physiological values, as well as the symmetry of both shoulders

Dental medicine is an extremely complex medical field, comprising several specialties (orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, prosthodontics, dental surgery, endodontics etc.), which in most cases also require the assistance of a dental nurse. Purpose. In this paper, we have tried to present a number of very interesting ergonomic aspects in the dental office, which aim at simplifying work at this level. Material and method. This study was conducted between May and July 2018 using a questionaire applied to a number of 69 dental practitioners from Bucharest. Results and discussions. Results obtained in this study give us an image about how current dental practitioners understand ergonomics in daily practice. Conlclusions. All the aspects discussed in this study have an important role in the ergonomy of daily activity of a dental office. More important is that the majority of dentists involved in the stuty understand and apply the ergonomic concepts underlined by this study

PRACTICAL APPROACH TO DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS USED BY ATHLETES

    No full text
Abstract Dietary supplements administration in athletes is a very used -and sometimes dangerous -practice, pushing the human performance to the physiological limits. The causes are multiple and derive from the observed or predictable need for adaptation, compensation and overcompensation, having as targeted effect the overload of the body with spare energy substances. The line between medication and doping is crossed intentionally or, more often, unintentionally, out of ignorance or negligence, leading to tough penalties on athletes, according to international regulations. Dietary supplements are widely used by athletes and remain the only legal solution allowed to protect the body, maintain the health and improve physical performance. The common effort of institutions and organizations involved in cessation of excessive consumption of supplements is reflected in legislative actions and also in education and information programmes. Thus, for the acquisition and management of ergotropic, trophotropic and recovery medication for athletes it is recommended to develop and maintain a close cooperation with competent authorities.

Purpose. Starting from a very recent event on the market of disinfectants, where for many years very diluted disinfectant products were marketed in Romania, the antimicrobial activity being non-existent, we tried, on the basis of simple experiments, to study the antimicrobial efficiency of the active substances of some common products used on impression materials in implant-prosthetic rehabilitation, but also in classical dental prosthetics and in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, products approved and used in the European Union. Material and method. 7 decontamination and/or disinfectant products were tested for qualitative screening for the sensitivity to different microbial strains as well as for quantitative testing of antimicrobial activity. Results and discussions. The study results for the two objectives are influenced by the active substances of the tested products. Conclusions. Decontamination of dental impressions must also become a certainty in implant-prosthetic rehabilitation, in classical dental prosthetics and in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics even if this work is disregarded and ignored by many practitioners

Purpose. The adhesion ability of microorganisms present in the oral microbial plaque is a certainty for solid surfaces at this level (including coronal restorations, classical prosthetic restorations and implantsupported restorations fixed and mobile, orthodontic appliances). Therefore, in this study, we have attempted to demonstrate the ability of these microorganisms from the oral cavity to adhere on the surface of some common impression materials used in implant-prosthetic rehabilitation. Material and method. The study was conducted on the main impression materials used in implant supported prosthetic restorations as well as in dental medicine: irreversible hydrocolloids, zinc oxide eugenol pastes, polyethers, condensation and addition silicones. The study was conducted between June and July 2017. Results and discussions. With the help of microorganisms isolated from the 87 patients, an inoculation of standard samples of impression materials was performed. Verification of adherence was achieved at different time intervals, the results being significant. Conclusions. For the tested materials, it was noted that the degree of adhesion was either influenced by the products incorporated in the base substance or by the secondary products resulted from chemical setting of material

The First World War was and is considered the most terrible conflagration of all time. Thus, over 65,000,000 soldiers made up the corps of land armies, naval and air forces, combat armies that participated in the conduct of military operations during the First World War. About 8,500,000 people died and more than 21,000,000 were injured. France was one of the countries most affected by this war, its medical services, including dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery, being completely obsolete. Thus, in this material, we tried to describe some important figures of French oral and maxillofacial dentistry and surgery, which were active in French civil and military hospitals during the First World War (1914-1918)
