The mechanisms of action of interleukin-1 on rabbit intestinal epithelial cells.
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is an inflammatory mediator that increases Cl- secretion in intestinal epithelial cells. To identify the signal transduction pathway(s) involved in IL-1's action, cells were treated with IL-1 and the levels of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and phospholipase A2-activating protein (PLAP), and the activity of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) were measured. IL-1 caused concentration- and time-dependent increases in the levels of PLA2 activity, and/or in the levels of PLAP, COX-2 and PGE2. The IL-induced increase in PGE2 levels was biphasic, with the first peak due to the increase in PLAP levels, and the second peak due to the increase in COX-2 levels. This increase in PGE2 levels may provide a mechanism for acute and chronic inflammation in the intestine
Interleukin-17 regulation: an attractive therapeutic approach for asthma
Interleukin (IL)-17 is recognized to play a critical role in numerous immune and inflammatory responses by regulating the expression of various inflammatory mediators, which include cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. There is growing evidence that IL-17 is involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. IL-17 orchestrates the neutrophilic influx into the airways and also enhances T-helper 2 (Th2) cell-mediated eosinophilic airway inflammation in asthma. Recent studies have demonstrated that not only inhibitor of IL-17 per se but also diverse regulators of IL-17 expression reduce antigen-induced airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and Th2 cytokine levels in animal models of asthma. This review will summarize the role of IL-17 in the context of allergic airway inflammation and discuss the therapeutic potential of various strategies targeting IL-17 for asthma
Providing oral health care to underserved population of pregnant women: retrospective review of 320 patients treated in private practice setting.
This article aims to quantify the impact of a novel partnership between a fee-for-service private practice and a teaching hospital dental service intended to provide oral care to an underserved population of pregnant women. Further, it seeks to ascertain the oral needs of this high-risk and diverse population. Data is presented that suggests the dire need for oral care among this pregnant population and the efficacy of treating these women in a private practice setting
