Do all religions pray to the same God?A highly debated matter in South African religopolitical field is the questionof whether different religions may worship together and if they pray to the same god at all. This question has come to the fore during the negotiation phase for a new governmental dispensation in this country, as well as in the opening prayers for Parliament in a pluralistic society. An exposition of the different views is given. The author opts for a view of existential experience of the personal, revealed, One and Only God. This conviction gives us the confidence in the Gospel so indispensable to the life of our churches in a pluralistic context. The dichotomy between subjectivityand objectivity is being rejected as is the consequent attitude of timidity or of anxiety on the part o f the Christians in South Africa. A distinction should be made between worship in the church and prefers in a worldly situation

Descendit ad [in] inferna:‘A matter of no small moment in bringing about redemption’

This article endorses Calvin’s conviction that the ‘descendit ad inferna’ of the Apostles’ Creed is part of the ‘summary of doctrine‘ and a matter of ‘no small moment in bringing about redemption‘ (Calvin 1960:Inst. II, xvi, 8). The reason for this role, however, is not Calvin’s metaphorical interpretation of the clause. Instead, the author tries to argue that a scientifi c theological approach will maintain the clause because of its transcendence of fi nitude and the proclamation of Christ’s victory. Thewhole of creation is delivered from sin. Proper hermeneutics will take the original socio–historical environment into account and make one suspicious about certain ecclesiastical biases. Spatial termsin the Creed should therefore not be demythologised, but rather be transformed in accordance with the insights of the contemporary physics of time and space

The paradigms of Kerk en wĂȘreld 2000This important publication of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika deals with the relationship between the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk and its society within the next decade. It gives an expanded view of the address of the church’s kerygma. The author of this article tries to identify a specific paradigm of the relation between church and society within which this matter neither corresponds to that of Luther nor to that of Calvin, although traces of both are being recognised. The author sees the reason for this in the fact that the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk, according to this publication, is willing to take the situation in which he works and lives seriously into consideration. The following paradigm shift can thus be noted: the more the church gets worried about the present situation, the less he is Lutheran and the more he is Calvinis-tic

The creation as an analogy: An assessment of the doctrine of creation of Karl Barth in the light of the appeal of the ecological crisis. In a comprehensive article in Afrikaans, the author points out that the problem of the relation between man and nature has become eminent as a result of the ecological crisis. The doctrine of creation as offered by Barth, does to a certain extent, present a coherence of being amongst creatures, but is nontheless not accepted. The main reason for this is that his ontological principle of covenant imputes a docetic character to the creation. This is ascribed to the fact that Barth operated with a canon behind the canon. The author concludes his article by outlining some distinctive features of a theologia naturae

The temptation of Realpolitik and vox populi in the ecclesiology of the Emerging Apostolic Churches with special reference to the fivefold ministry

    Get PDF
The Emerging Apostolic Churches do not have a uniform church polity since the power of governance is claimed to be with the fivefold ministers, while at the same time embracing either the Episcopal, Presbyterial, or Congregational church governments. The fivefold ministry is a generally accepted term that refers to the five ministries given by Christ to the Church to stand in unique spiritual offices, as found in Ephesians 4:11. This article tries to answer the question: “Are the Emerging Apostolic Churches ecclesiologically correct by centring the authority of governance in the fivefold ministers and the popular voices of the followers?” At the same time it is endeavored to argue that due to Biblical and theological grounds the fivefold ministry is untenable to church polity hence Realpolitik and vox populi dominating the ecclesiastical life and polity of the Emerging Apostolic Churches. The aim is to demonstrate that these two concepts (Realpolitik and vox populi) play a significant part in shaping the church polity and structures of this ecclesiastical phenomenon. The instability of partially stiffened stainless steel compression members due to local buckling of the flange element or flange and lip interaction has not been studied before. In this investigation the critical local buckling and post-buckling behaviour of cold-formed partially stiffened stainless steel compression elements is studied. It is concluded in this investigation that a plasticity reduction factor should be used to evaluate the critical local buckling stress as well as the effective width to calculate the ultimate capacity of partially stiffened stainless steel compression members
