Wavelet frame bijectivity on Lebesgue and Hardy spaces

We prove a sufficient condition for frame-type wavelet series in LpL^p, the Hardy space H1H^1, and BMO. For example, functions in these spaces are shown to have expansions in terms of the Mexican hat wavelet, thus giving a strong answer to an old question of Meyer. Bijectivity of the wavelet frame operator acting on Hardy space is established with the help of new frequency-domain estimates on the Calder\'on-Zygmund constants of the frame kernel.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure

Policy Recognition in the Abstract Hidden Markov Model

In this paper, we present a method for recognising an agent's behaviour in dynamic, noisy, uncertain domains, and across multiple levels of abstraction. We term this problem on-line plan recognition under uncertainty and view it generally as probabilistic inference on the stochastic process representing the execution of the agent's plan. Our contributions in this paper are twofold. In terms of probabilistic inference, we introduce the Abstract Hidden Markov Model (AHMM), a novel type of stochastic processes, provide its dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) structure and analyse the properties of this network. We then describe an application of the Rao-Blackwellised Particle Filter to the AHMM which allows us to construct an efficient, hybrid inference method for this model. In terms of plan recognition, we propose a novel plan recognition framework based on the AHMM as the plan execution model. The Rao-Blackwellised hybrid inference for AHMM can take advantage of the independence properties inherent in a model of plan execution, leading to an algorithm for online probabilistic plan recognition that scales well with the number of levels in the plan hierarchy. This illustrates that while stochastic models for plan execution can be complex, they exhibit special structures which, if exploited, can lead to efficient plan recognition algorithms. We demonstrate the usefulness of the AHMM framework via a behaviour recognition system in a complex spatial environment using distributed video surveillance data

On Balazard, Saias, and Yor's equivalence to the Riemann Hypothesis

Balazard, Saias, and Yor proved that the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to a certain weighted integral of the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function along the critical line equaling zero. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, we investigate the rate at which a truncated version of this integral tends to zero, answering a question of Borwein, Bradley, and Crandall and disproving a conjecture of the same authors. A simple modification of our techniques gives a new proof of a classical Omega theorem for the function S(t) in the theory of the Riemann zeta-function.Comment: 11 page

Germline Cas9 expression yields highly efficient genome engineering in a major worldwide disease vector, Aedes aegypti.

The development of CRISPR/Cas9 technologies has dramatically increased the accessibility and efficiency of genome editing in many organisms. In general, in vivo germline expression of Cas9 results in substantially higher activity than embryonic injection. However, no transgenic lines expressing Cas9 have been developed for the major mosquito disease vector Aedes aegypti Here, we describe the generation of multiple stable, transgenic Ae. aegypti strains expressing Cas9 in the germline, resulting in dramatic improvements in both the consistency and efficiency of genome modifications using CRISPR. Using these strains, we disrupted numerous genes important for normal morphological development, and even generated triple mutants from a single injection. We have also managed to increase the rates of homology-directed repair by more than an order of magnitude. Given the exceptional mutagenic efficiency and specificity of the Cas9 strains we engineered, they can be used for high-throughput reverse genetic screens to help functionally annotate the Ae. aegypti genome. Additionally, these strains represent a step toward the development of novel population control technologies targeting Ae. aegypti that rely on Cas9-based gene drives

Access, accountability, and advocacy: culturally and linguistically diverse families’ participation in IEP meetings

All parents of eligible students with disabilities have the right to collaborate as equal members of educational teams developing their children’s Individualized Education Programs (IEP). However, culturally and linguistically diverse families typically experience barriers to collaboration with school professionals. In this paper, we describe findings from four focus group interviews with Chinese, Vietnamese, and Haitian immigrants examining their participation and language access in their children’s IEP meetings, as well as their perspectives on what would improve their IEP meetings. Findings revealed that meaningful engagement was hampered by families’ limited access to information, educators’ lack of accountability, and limited opportunities for families to develop as advocates. Implications of the research addressing the within-meeting and between-meeting barriers are discussed.Accepted manuscrip
