Hidden isometry of "T-duality without isometry"

We study the T-dualisability criteria of Chatzistavrakidis, Deser and Jonke [3] who recently used Lie algebroid gauge theories to obtain sigma models exhibiting a "T-duality without isometry". We point out that those T-dualisability criteria are not written invariantly in [3] and depend on the choice of the algebroid framing. We then show that there always exists an isometric framing for which the Lie algebroid gauging boils down to standard Yang-Mills gauging. The "T-duality without isometry" of Chatzistavrakidis, Deser and Jonke is therefore nothing but traditional isometric non-Abelian T-duality in disguise.Comment: 15 page

A drill by any other name: social representations, framing, and legacies of natural resource extraction in the fracking industry

How do people interpret ambiguous and uncertain events? This study explores this question in the context of unconventional oil and gas development, or “fracking”, with implications for natural resource extraction generally. Drawing on the theories of social representations and framing, we test the hypothesis that legacies of natural resource extraction—conceptualized here as collective schemata of interpretation—shape perceptions and actions toward new forms of energy development. Based on an analysis of survey data from the “Twin Tiers” regions of New York and Pennsylvania (n=590), we find that negatively perceived legacies of past resource dependence, net of other factors, lead to opposition and political behaviors related to unconventional oil and gas development. Our findings suggest that regional legacies of natural resource extraction act as a sense making tool, working to translate the ambiguous, novel phenomenon of unconventional oil and gas development into something understandable in light of past experiences

Non-abelian T-folds

We discuss the conditions under which non-abelian T-duality can be considered as a chain of abelian T-dualities. Motivated by these results, we propose that the topology of a non-abelian T-dual should be phrased in the language of T-folds, and give the explicit O(d, d) transformations which can be used to glue the dual space.Comment: 17 pages. Addressing Utah’s School to Prison Pipeline

Utah’s STTP problem needs to be resolved. Zero tolerance policies, the limited constitutional rights of students, the police power of school administrators, the injection of SROs into our schools without clear job responsibilities and training, and the imbalance of power between students and state actors all contribute to Utah’s biased STPP. To address the STPP, researchers encourage: the expansion of legal protections for juveniles; the re-training of SROs and employment contracts that clearly define SROs’ responsibilities; the use of restorative justice practices and other evidence-based alternatives to the juvenile justice system; and reforming the discretionary power of state actors to cite, refer, and sentence youth within the juvenile justice system
