    Competing creole transcripts on trial

A criminal prosecution of Jamaican Creole (JC) speaking ‘posse’(=gang) members in New York included evidence of recorded speech in JC. Clandestinerecordings (discussions of criminal events, including narration of a homicide) wereintroduced at trial. Taped data were translated for prosecution by a non-linguist nativespeaker of JC. Defense disputed these texts and commissioned alternative transcriptionsfrom a creolist linguist, who was a non-speaker of JC. Prosecution in turn hired anothercreolist, a near-native speaker of and specialist in JC, to testify on the relative accuracyof both sets of earlier texts. Differing representations of key conversations weresubmitted to a non-creole speaking judge/jury, both linguists testified, and defendantswere convicted. The role of linguistic testimony and practice (especially transcription)in the trial is analysed. A typology of linguistic expertise is given, and effects of thelanguage’s Creole status and lack of instrumentalization on the trial are discussed

Control of Three Invasive Annual Grasses in Utah Using Herbicides Including Indaziflam

Invasive grasses pose a threat to rangeland ecosystems in Utah. Three grasses in particular: downy brome, medusahead, and ventenata can push out native plants and prevent other vegetation from germinating. These grasses can also degrade grazing lands for cattle and act as kindling for wildfires. The use of herbicides is the most common way to rid a site of invasive plants. Herbicides that prevent germination for many years work well to keep annual grasses at bay while not harming the many long-living native plants that are already growing. A study was designed on a site infested with downy brome to test how well native plants tolerate a variety of herbicides. The main objective was to test for lone herbicides or combinations that do minimal damage to the native vegetation with maximum damage to downy brome. Ventenata is an invasive grass that is new to Utah; thus, not much is known about how to control it. An experiment was designed to test different herbicides on a site invaded by ventenata and observe the effects on the surrounding native and weedy plants. A concurrent greenhouse study was designed to test three different herbicides on downy brome, ventenata, and medusahead to see how they react differently in controlled conditions compared to field conditions. An experiment was designed to restore a site that had been completely overtaken by medusahead using herbicides. The site was sprayed with a variety of different herbicides. Native and other desirable plants were planted using a drill into the site in order to see which herbicides prevented medusahead germination while allowing maximum establishment of the plants that were seeded

Requirements for Investigating the Connection Between Lyman Alpha Absorption Clouds and the Large-Scale Distribution of Galaxies

We model the requirements on observational data that would allow an accurate determination of the degree of association between Lyman alpha absorbers and peaks in the redshift distribution of galaxies (large-scale structures like clusters of galaxies). We compare simulated distributions of low-redshift Lyman alpha absorption systems, constrained to be consistent with the distribution observed with HST, with the large-scale distribution of galaxies determined from pencil-beam redshift surveys. We estimate the amount of observational data required from catalogues of Lyman alpha absorbers and galaxies to allow a statistically significant test of the association of absorbers with large-scale structures of galaxies. We find that for each line-of-sight observed for Lyman alpha absorption lines (assuming that the entire redshift range out to z=0.4 is observable), redshifts must be obtained for at least 18 galaxies brighter than Mb=-18 and having redshifts between 0.2 and 0.4. Based on the redshift surveys used in this study, a search radius of 10' from the quasar line-of-sight is required. This will ensure that all peaks in the galaxy redshift distribution are represented by at least one galaxy in the observed sample. If Lyman alpha absorbers are intrinsically uncorrelated with galaxies, we find that 8 lines-of-sight must be observed to show that the distributions are different at the 95% confidence level. However, if a fraction of the Lyman alpha absorbers are distributed with the peaks in the galaxy distribution, 38 lines-of-sight must be mapped for the distribution of both Lyman alpha absorbers and galaxies in order to determine the fraction of absorbers distributed with the peaks of the galaxy distribution to an accuracy of 10%.Comment: 17 pages LaTeX file, plus 6 uuencoded compressed .eps figures to be printed seperately, to appear in Feb. 1, 1996 Ap

Living-Learning Programs Through the Years: A Reflection on Partnerships Between Students, Faculty, and Student Affairs

    Get PDF
LIVING-LEARNING PROGRAMS (LLPs), also known as learning communities, offer students a shared academic focus within a residential community; thus, LLPs are considered ideal contexts for student learning. In 1994, Zeller highlighted Washington State University as an example of how learning communities can successfully incorporate faculty, students, and student affairs practitioners/departments into collaborative learning environments. This study provides an overview of changes that have occurred in the creation and implementation of LLPs during the past two decades. Using the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a case study, this paper illustrates the growth and adaptation of LLPs over the years. Implications and innovations for practice and research are also offered for application to other institutions
